Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Xyz Territory
#PHSW-EN088

When an Xyz Monster battles another monster, that Xyz Monster gains 200 ATK & DEF × its Rank, during damage calculation only. If this face-up card on the field would be destroyed by a card effect, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from a monster you control instead.

Card Ratings
Traditional: 1.75
Advanced: 2.95

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst. 3 is average. 5 is the highest rating.

Xyz Territory--A much needed Field Magic card for the Xyz player, but this, in my opinion, doesn't do what it should to warrant being played.  It IS one of the better Field Magics out there, but I think you're better off without it.  Xyz need a card like this that allows them to attack or use their effects without having to discard an Xyz Material.  Now, when an Xyz Monster Battles, not yours, but any, so this works for the opponent too, the Xyz Monster gains attack equal to its Rank x200.  Say an average of 800, going on most that you see (easy enough anyway) would be Rank 3-Rank 5.  That's a respectable enough increase.  Furthermore, if this card would be destroyed, you can discard an Xyz Material from an Xyz Monster you control to negate that destruction.  The protection is nice, especially in a Format with triple Mystical Space Typhoon.  But this doesn't do enough to warrant being played I'm afraid.

2/5 all around, it's nice enough support, but just doesn't do enough

It is the age of Xyz summoning, so along those lines we are going to look at a field spell card that gives our Xyz monsters a boost. Xyz Territory will boost our Xyz monsters by 200 attack and defense. When I say our, I mean both you and your opponent’s as it works on all Xyz monsters on the field. As Xyz monsters tend to have great effects, but not the greatest in attacks, this card could be the answer. Steelswarm Roach for instance only has 1900 attack, but combined with this card, becomes 2700.

Let’s take a look at some of the other monsters this card pumps up. Gachi Gachi becomes 2600, Leviar 2400, Dollka 3200, Laggia 3200, and Utopia 3300 attack. The card we reviewed a couple of weeks ago, Thunder End Dragon becomes 4600 attack. Gem Knight Pearl, a non-effect Xyz monster goes from 2600 atk to atk and now has a use for its materials.

Decks that you might see this card in are Evols, Rescue Rabbit, Tour Guide, and Wind-Up decks to name a few. The only reservations that I have is that it is a field spell card and you have to use your Xyz monster’s materials to protect it. Personally, I like to use Xyz materials for my Xyz monster’s effects, but chances are that your monsters will stay on the field longer with Xyz Territory on the field.

I really do not like field spell cards because they are a negative 1 and become Heavy Storm, Black Rose Dragon, and Judgment Dragon bait. This is why you do not see people running equip cards and field spells like Mystic Plasma Zone in their decks even though they would work great in them. The ability to protect itself from destruction and the ease of Xyz summoning boosts its ratings.

"When an Xyz Monster battles another monster, that Xyz Monster gains 200 ATK & DEF × its Rank, during damage calculation only. If this face-up card on the field would be destroyed by a card effect, you can detach 1 Xyz Material from a monster you control instead."

An okay power boost for Xyzs that can protect itself by sacrificing Xzy material cards. Xyzs are pretty powerful monsters as it is, and this card can net anywhere from an exta +200 to +1200 A & D. A nice card to include in any Xyz deck, but that's the only place you'll want to put it, as it takes up valuable room in other decks.

Today, we have a card exclusively for the Xyz, Xyz Territory!

This is a field spell (yes, you may groan) that increases an Xyz monster’s attack by 200 x its rank when battling another monster. Now field spells are not very attractive unless they provide quick and one-sided advantage (such as Gates of the Underworld). But it’s easy to underestimate the amount of help this card provides.

Leviair, which only has 300 attack, increases to Monarch levels – 2400! Tired of you Grenosaures not destroying more things? Xyz Territory puts it at 2600. That’s more than capable of overrunning Stardust Dragon and Iron Chain Dragon. Utopia increases to 3300, far stronger than the majority of Level 8’s you’ll see.

Territory even has a protection clause. If it’d be destroyed by a card effect, you can detach a material. This at will at least let you keep it around for longer than usual.

Overall, I could definitely see this being played in casual duels but not as much in competitive duels. If you Xyz summon at least once or twice a duel, this will be the card for you.

Traditional: 1.5/5 (I don’t know when a field spell would be used here)
Advanced: 3/5 (for general Xyz support, but 4/5 if you’re in a casual duel)
Art: 5/5 (For a rare, this is pretty awesome art. Easily ultimate rare worthy)
