Blackwing – Hillen the Tengu-wind
One of the newest members to the formidable
Blackwing archetype, Hillen the Tengu-wind offers a
new take on a previously-used Blackwing mechanic:
Special Summons from the graveyard.
Traditional format decks would have no need for the
situational kind of effect that Hillen offers, so it
really has no place there.
On the other hand, given how often Blackwing decks
have been hit by the ban list, it should come as no
surprise that Hillen the Tengu-wind is something to
consider as tech in current Blackwing builds. Its
condition of needing to take at least 2000 battle
damage from a direct attack is not difficult to
meet, though not always (think: pummels by Gadgets).
It can essentially turn into a stall for at least a
turn, with a sturdy 2300 defense, as well as a
possible 6/7/8/9 star Synchro Summon the following
turn. It has no restriction on what Synchro it can
go for, so anything is up for grabs. Heck, using
Level Eater with this would mean a free 6-star
Synchro. The only caveat is that most of the tricks
Hillen the Tengu-wind can pull off require graveyard
setup, a bit like Vayu but more awkward to deal with
since it is a 6-star monster unto itself, and cannot
simply be Set and used with Icarus Attack like Vayu.
However, it can be searched through Shura just as
well, so the possibilities are definitely there.
Consider also how it can mesh easily with
Dark-attribute support such as Dark Grepher, and we
begin to see more and more plays open up (Dark
Creator anyone?). However, only time will tell if
today’s competitive players will have the chance to
give this card a whirl, or if the meta just ends up
being too fast for it.

Blackwing Hillen the Tengu wind

Hillen the Tengu Wind. Well he looks pretty cool.
However, so did all the other Blackwings from the
last few sets....and they were just awful. This guys
not awful though...hes actually pretty....well hes
not awful. I really feel for blackwings, getting the
short stick from the banlist, and simply not seeing
as much play. This guy could go in many blackwing
decks as psuedo replacements for your lost feathery
friends.
I say this because taking 2k damage is not unlikely.
Its pretty nice that its 2k direct or battle damage,
not that you want to take that much regardless but
still. Then again check his stats, 0/2300, SS a lvl
3 or lower bw from the grave and the effects
negated. Now what level 3 blackwing are you most
likely going to grab that isn't a tuner? That one
Kalut? I mean...you can SS this guy off Shura so
thats also nice.
He gives you more synching options and really isn't
that awful.
Overall, not bad but nothing to go crazy over. You
can only get his effect once per duel so I figure
the assumption is that most players should use
one.....test him and make an informed decision.
