Number 96: Dark Mist is certainly one of the more
interesting XYZ Monsters out there. This is a Rank
2, Fiend-type, Dark attribute XYZ Monster, who is
XYZ Summoned with three Level 2 Monsters. Dark Mist
has 100 attack and 1000 defense, which seems
absolutely detestable for a Monster you had to
invest three others in. Anyway, once a Battle,
during either player's turn, you can detach and XYZ
Material from Dark Mist, to halve the attack of the
opponent's Monster, and Dark Mist in turn gains
attack equal to that amount. So that in theory at
least makes it worthwhile that he holds three XYZ
Material, but here's what I see as a problem. What
stops your opponent from sending three Monsters in
to attack to force you to use your effect, OR an
effect or whatever else to destroy the Monster out
right? That's a big investment just to be ripped
like that.

I am not a big fan of Xyz monsters that require a
lot of resources to summon or take three monsters to
summon. Number 96: Dark Mist can be used in decks
that focus on special summoning level 2 monsters.
Probably the best deck that I can think of to use
Dark Mist in is a Fairy deck. It is real easy to
summon The Agent of Creation – Venus, then use its
effect to special summon 3 Mystic Shine Balls. I
guess if your opponent has a big monster out then
this would be the way to go, otherwise Gachi Gachi
would be the best choice.
Outside of Fairy decks, you pretty much have to
build your deck around a monster that can run over
any of your opponent’s monsters but can be taken out
easily by effects unless you attach Safe Zone to it.
We have a number of level 2 monsters that special
summon more level 2 monsters like Giant Germ and
Nimble Momonga. Frog decks have Swap Frog and
Ronintoadin to swarm the field with level 2
monsters. Another cool trick is to use Reinforce
Truth to special summon Hero Kid then use Hero Kid’s
effect to special summon two more Kids from the
deck.
The nice thing about Number 96: Dark Mist is that it
can attack with Gravity Bind, Messenger of Peace,
and Level Limit B in play in most cases. The other
nice thing about this card is that the change in
attack points for both monsters do not change at the
end of the turn, so Dark Mist will just keep getting
stronger with each attack. Unfortunately, Effect
Veiler and Skill Drain will put its attack back to
100 and card effects will just negate all of your
hard work to bring it out.

Number 96: Dark Mist is an interesting card. A
Rank 2 fiend, needing 3 level 2 monsters, Dark Mist
can get over any monster in the game by, when it
battles, detaching 1 Xyz material whenever it's
involved in battle, cutting in half the ATK of the
monster it's battling and then it adds that same
amount to own ATK. Overall, Dark Mist is like Wicked
Avatar, but a bit easier to get out. Also, this is
the highest number of the number cards, just a bit
of a side note. Dark Mist is a good way to get rid
of the biggest monsters, 3 level 2 monsters are
easier to get than it sounds.

Back to the theme...
96 is an alright card, but having 3 Level 2
monsters in play requires serious effort on building
the deck to make this guy playable. His stats are
dismal, but the effect makes up for the mere 100
ATK. The fact that it's usable during the opponent's
turn as well as your own makes it rather useful.

You know, for the longest time,
I ran Black Mist in my Final Countdown Extra Deck. I
never did summon him; I only ran him on the
off-chance I could Monster Reborn an opposing Level
2 monster to Overlay with my Shiba-Warrior Taro.
That was before I realized Black Mist required three
Overlay Units.
Like all Synchro or Xyz Monsters, Dark Mist will
need to get subjugated to comparison to other Rank 2
monsters. Dark Mist is the only one that needs more
than two Materials. Gachi Gachi, the only other Rank
2 monster in English, is, of course, the most
popular one, being a sturdy wall and providing a 200
boost to all your monsters for every Xyz Material he
still has on him. Otherwise, we have a 1500 ATK
Daigusto that can allow any other Wind monster to
attack twice or a rather underwhelming 1600 ATK
Spellcaster that will drop the ATK of the opponent's
summoned monster(s) by 500.
Ok, it's actually not impossible to get a triplet of
Level 2 monsters out. The Agent of Creation - Venus
can instantly provide Mystical Shine Balls to give
you this Xyz Monster. Zombie has Pain Painter to
create Level 2 monsters, so if you decide not to
Synchro Summon one of the three Zombie Synchros, you
can always go Dark Mist for brute force. The third
most notable Deck I think that can go with this card
is Ojama. Usually, Ojamas like to go with Gachi,
as he gives a great ATK boost for them, but Ojamas
can swarm easily to easily provide Material for Dark
Mist. Also, the ATK boost Gachi gives for Ojamas may
not be enough; Black Mist reaps huge benefits from
Ojama Country (I mean, he probably won't absorb as
much ATK from his effect, but he does have a higher
DEF stat than ATK).
Dark Mist's effect practically makes him
invulnerable to battle thrice (but just barely, so
not that much LP damage to your opponent), and by
the time he uses that effect three times, he'll
probably be so powered up your opponent won't be
able to trump it anyway (cards that focus on
increasing their own ATK are greatly vulnerable to
Book of Moon of course). The best part is that Dark
Mist's effect is optional, meaning you only use it
when you really need to. Decks that use an abundance
of Level 2 monsters aren't common, but for those
that do (Normalcy, Frogs), Dark Mist can be a great
asset.
Niche Decks: Ojama, Agents,
Zombies, Frogs, anything else off Dark Mist's
article on yugioh.wikia that you think you can pull
off decently

Aesthetics: 5/5 Ninety-six, in
Japanese, is
kyujuuroku (nine is ku and
six is ro). If you have a basic understanding of
common words used in Japanese action anime, kuro means
black. A truly frightening monster, this
Fiend deserves the title of Number 96. You can see
the insignia, below his horns and above his flaming
eyes and gaping jaw of evil energy. An inverse of
the more blissful number 69 (which really ought to
be Utopia's number). If you think it, both 69 and 96
remind me a lot of the yin-yang "black-white"
circle, the way that it still sorta looks alike when
upside-down.
