Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

Hieratic Dragon of Asar
#GAOV-EN024

You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) by banishing 1 LIGHT Dragon-Type monster and 1 Dragon-Type Normal Monster from your Graveyard. If this face-up card on the field would be destroyed, you can Tribute 1 face-up "Hieratic" monster you control instead, except this card.

Ratings are based on a 1 to 5 scale
1 being the worst. 3 is average. 5 is the highest rating.

Monday

Hieratic Dragon week Part Deux, opening with the Dragon of Asar.  This a Light attributed, Level 7 Dragon, with 2600 attack (not awful) yet a despicable 700 defense.  Level 7 obviously requires two tributes, however Asar can be Special Summoned by removing a Light attributed Dragon, and a Normal Dragon Monster from your Graveyard.  If this face-up card would be destroyed, you can tribute a Hieratic Monster, other than this card, instead.  That's not a bad effect at all, it combos very well with most of the other cards we reviewed last week, but the face-up part sucks.  It might be irrelevant, as Book of Moon can ruin Asar's day, with the 700 defense.

Hieratic Dragon of Asar is not a crucial part of the Hieratic deck, but it has value as a tech card in the deck. It is not a good card to play in 3’s because of the need to remove Normal Dragons from the graveyard. First you have to have normal monsters in the graveyard and then, we normally like to have them there to reuse. Another problem we have with this card is that it is a level 7 and Hieratic decks like making level 5, 6, and 8 better. Being a level 7 monster also makes it hard to tribute summon.

Hieratic Dragon of Asar has many redeeming qualities that earn it a spot in a Hieratic deck. First, it is a 2600 monster that can be special summoned. Second, it can use its effect to save itself and activate a Hieratic monsters tribute effect at the same time.

While not crucial to the deck, Asar is still a good card to play in a Hieratic deck.

It's another week of Hieratics. This one is Dragon of Asar. A level 7 Light-Dragon type. That seems normal for the Hieratics, except Asar has a kinda BLS thing going, as you can special summon this card from your hand by banishing one light-type dragon and one-normal dragon-type from your grave. While his ATK is alright at 2700, and his DEF is meh at a mere 700. He's ok for dropping a big hitter when you need it, other than that, Asar doesn't do much to help the playstyle of the Hieratics, but he can overpower a lot. Sometimes that's all you might need.

Tomorrow: even more Hieratics.

Asar comes shooting straight out of your hand with 2600 ATK. The cost? Banish a Light Dragon and a Normal Dragon from the Grave. Note that these do not have to be any particular Hieratic monsters, so the Light Dragon you banish can be...well...any Light Dragon, such as Wattaildragon, although it usually will actually be a Hieratic monster.

No, not really, I take that back. Usually nothing will get banished because usually Asar doesn't get played anyway.
Asar isn't used for the exact same reason Gravekeeper's Visionary isn't used. They're "ok-ish," but they're nowhere near spectacular enough to warrant their summoning. Sure, paying the cost of Asar's effect usually means you get a free Normal Dragon summon, but that's still bad management and I'd rather Asar be able to Tribute ANY monster. It could've at least been nice if Asar could Tribute a Hieratic monster from the hand, because the way it is now, Asar can't save itself from Dark Hole, in the same manner Six Samurais cannot protect each other if they're ALL getting destroyed at once.
And by this point, card effects don't always "destroy," such as Dimensional Prison or Black Luster Soldier. If Asar is going to get destroyed by battle, it's usually not worth protecting itself from that either.

It would've been better had it been Level 6; would be good for Xyz Summoning Hieratic Dragon King of Atum anyway.

Oh yeah and either Book of Moon or Maestroke the Symphony Djinn makes mincemeat of this Dragon.

Traditional: 1/5
Advanced: 1.5/5 (I mean it's cool if only to continue the Hieratic theme, but barely worth using in high-level play)
Aesthetics: 3/5 At least this card somewhat lives up to its name of Osiris (yeah, Asar → Osiris, blame Westernization), the green-skinned Egyptian god of the dead (there is a lot of ambiguity whether Anubis is Osiris' son, but either way, Anubis is also the god of the dead, albeit more on the mummification part). Osiris is the oldest son of Geb and Nut (the Level 4 Dragons), making him the grandon of Tefnuit, etc. He married his sister, Isis and together their kid was Horus. Most infamously of all, Osiris got brutally murdered by his brother Set. Isis brought him back to life and then they had Horus and then Osiris dropped dead. That's when Set saw him and cut him up in 14 pieces. Isis properly mummified him and after that, Osiris came back to life AGAIN as the god of the dead. This is why the Nile has its annual floods. It's funny, if you imagine Slifer as being actually Osiris and Asar being his dragonic consort... If we ever review Slifer, the aesthetics rating would be so, so low hahaha.

Philosophy Corner: None for this week. I promise it will resume next week.

Hello duelists! Blackmarketyugioh back after a week vacation. So let's get on it!!

Following last weeks Friday CotD, we have more hieratic monsters on the board this week, starting with this guy, Hieratic Dragon Of Asar.
Asar is a  7 star, 2600/700 Light monster, With the chaos type Special summoning conditions. You can banish 1 Light attribute dragon type, and 1 Dragon type normal monster. When he would bedestroyed, you can tribute a Hiearatic monster to save him.
Now, this guy is only decent because of his ATK, and really nothing else. Having to banish your dragons to get him out is not the best thing to do in the Hiearatic builds that I am seeing floating around. Having the ATK to run over most boss monsters(Stardust, Shien, LPD, etc.), is good, but not at the cost of slowing the rest of the deck down. Also, being a 7 star slows things down, since Hieratics are bettter at 6 rank and 8 rank Xyz summons. While I could see the reasoning for him being used, I just do not see the room in the already packed decks to run this guy.

Advanced: 1/5 Can only be ran in Hieratics, and who will to begin with?
Traditional: 1/5 ^See above^
Artwork: 2/5 He looks like a slime monster wearing armor. What?

Asar is interesting in that he can defend himself from destruction. Sadly, his stats are rather poor for a Lv 7 monster. Of all the Hieratic Dragons, he seems to be the least useful. He can't even bring out otherDragons, which is the staple effect of this deck type.
