Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh Card of the Day

The Grand Spellbook Tower
- #ABYR-EN060

Once per turn, during your Standby Phase, if you have a Spellcaster-Type monster on your side of the field or in your Graveyard: You can return 1 "Spellbook" Spell Card from your Graveyard to the bottom of your Deck, except "The Grand Spellbook Tower", then draw 1 card. When this card is destroyed by your opponent's card and sent to the Graveyard: You can Special Summon 1 Spellcaster-Type monster from your hand or Deck whose Level is less than or equal to the number of "Spellbook" Spell Cards in your Graveyard.

The Grand Spellbook Tower is a very interesting Field Magic Card.  If you're running a Spellbook Deck, do you NEED to be running a copy of this?  I'm figuring you probably aren't, since destroying a Field Magic Card is so simple, it's almost sickening.  But I'd seriously (consider) playing one if I were playing the Deck.  This card does a lot of things right, first, you get a Spell Counter for each turn you have at least one Spellcaster-type Monster on your Field OR in your Graveyard.  Second, you can return a Spellbook Magic card from your Graveyard to the bottom of your Deck, to Draw one card.  Being on the bottom of your Deck isn't a bad thing.  There are numerous ways to access Spellbook cards from your Deck.  The extra Draw is also a wonderful ability.  You can't add another copy of this to your Deck via its effect, but I wouldn't play more than one of these anyway I don't think.  Lastly, when this card is destroyed by your opponent's card, and sent to the Graveyard, you can Special Summon a Spellcaster-type Monster from your Hand or Deck, whose Level is less than or equal to the number of counters that were on this card.  So it recycles Spellbooks, lets you Draw, and grants you a Monster.  It needs protecting, one card coming to mind is Secret Village of the Spellcasters would help a lot I think.

We are back to talking about Spellbooks again today. The Grand Spellbook Tower gives Spellbooks draw power which is always good. It also has a nice side effect in that it puts Spellbooks back into the deck to be used again. One last side effect that The Grand Spellbook Tower has is that it clears the graveyard of Spellbooks so you can use cards that require your graveyard to be Spellbook free like a card we looked at last week called Spellbook Library of the Crescent.

Now for the bad news. First, it puts Spellbooks back into the deck which can be a plus, but it can also be a negative as most of our Prophecy monsters like having Spellbooks in the graveyard to use them for their effects. Second, it cannot use a copy of itself for its effect. Third, it has to wait a turn to use its effect so it is susceptible to being destroyed and makes for some good Heavy Storm bait. Finally, it depletes your graveyard of Spellbooks, so the effect to special summon a Spellcaster from your deck or graveyard is hurt. A catch 22 if you will.

If The Grand Spellbook Tower can last a turn or you have some Spellbooks in the grave, it will at least replace itself, so that alone makes this a good card. In a Prophecy/Spellbook deck, Tower could be more of a hindrance than a help. In a Spellcaster deck, there may be better options for Field Spell cards. I kind of like this card in a Spellbook heavy deck with maybe even Malefic Stardust Dragon. It is easily searched with Spellbook of Secrets and Power, Spellbook Magician of Prophecy, and a host of other cards to include Demise of the Land.

The Grand Spellbook Tower seems to be a giant recycling center in disguise, and that's a good thing.

Once per turn, during your standby phase, if you have a Spellcaster-type monster on your side of the field or in your graveyard: You can return 1 Spellbook spell card from your graveyard to the bottom of your deck *Except The Grand Spellbook Tower*, then draw 1 card. When this card is destroyed by our opponent's card effect and sent to the graveyard: You can Special summon 1 Spellcaster-type monster from your hand or deck whos level is equal or less than the number of Spellbook Spell card in your graveyard.

There are few Field spells that are worth playing. This card is worth a definite look at. You can use Terraforming, Spellbook of Secrets, and Spellbook Magician of Prophecy as a few ways to grab it from your deck to your hand. All you need is a Spellcaster on the field or in your graveyard to get back one of your Spellbook card back in the bottom of your deck to get and use later. Oh and you get to draw a card after putting said Spellbook spell card back at the bottom. That's a pretty good deal right there. If it gets destroyed, you get to special summon a Spellcaster monster from deck or graveyard whose level is equal to or less than the number of Spellbook cards in your grave. In mid-game that can get you at least a level 3, 4 or 5, depending how much you use Tower's recycling effect. Even after it goes to the grave and you want it back, Strength of Prophecy can get it back to your deck while boosting its own level and ATK. The down sides of Tower is the fact it is a Field spell, vulnerable to the triple Mystical Space Typhoons, Heavy Storm and anything else that can stop this card cold. But that shouldn't stop you Spellbook users from giving this card a spot in your deck. While everyone else is going nuts over Mermails and all the great WATER support from Abyss Rising, Tower may get overlooked.

Traditional: 2 A bit slow here as it is a Field spell.
Advanced: 3 Spellbooks only.
Tomorrow: You want Justice? Try this card.
