Welcome to Thanksgiving week my friends, thus
leading to a short week, (only Mon-Weds) for us.
Continuing to delve into Abyss Rising, we look at
the XYZ counterpart to Giant Soldier of Stone, being
Giant Soldier of Steel. First for a gripe, last I
checked, Steel is a METAL. This, however, is a Rock
type Monster. That aside, it's a Rank 3 XYZ
Monster, of the Earth attribute, with 1300 attack
and 2000 defense, neither which is all too
impressive on its own. XYZ Summoned with two Level
3 Rock Monsters, my verdict overall is still out on
this guy. Once a turn, during either players turn,
you can detach an XYZ Material to increase this
cards defense by 1000 (to 3000) which is quite good.
The part I'm confused about here (and unresolved
via Yugioh wiki) as to if you can use this during
any Phase of either turn, or if it has to be
specific. For the good, you take no Damage via
opponent card effects after using this effect, so
perhaps when you can use it isn't super important.
I'd still like to know! That strikes me as
important, as to whether you could activate the
effect as a result of your opponent activating a
card. Now for a definite plus, Giant Soldier of
Steel is unaffected by other Monster's effects.
Still doesn't prevent Battle Damage, and it's base
stats are still unimpressive.

so they went and made an XYZ version of Giant
Soldier of Stone, huh? To be honest, the stats
should have been better, rather than an exact match
of the original monster.
Also, his effect isn't all that great. With all
the monster-killing card effects out there, this guy
will be a prime target, especially with Smashing
Ground. Being able to negate effect damage is okay,
but with his summoning being restricted to using
Rock-type monsters, his playability is far too
limited for such meager effects and stats.

I'll be honest, when I heard about Giant Soldier
of Steel, I giggled a little. But upon giving it a
second look, it's really a decent card. Much like
its old school, normal counterpart Giant Soldier of
Stone, its an EARTH/Rock type monster with 1300 ATK
and 2000 DEF. But that's where it ends. A Rank 3
Xyz, needing 2 level 3 Rock type monsters.
This card is unaffected by other monster's effects.

effects this turn.
This overlooked card can be a great stall card in
Rock variants. 2000 DEF is pretty good, but the
ability to make it 3000 DEF by detaching an Xyz
material from it, even on your opponent's turn will
make your opponent think twice about attacking, even
if they have a monster with over 2000 ATK. I also
like the fact that he can protect himself from
monster effects as well. It may not seem like a lot
but it can save you from a few things. Also when you
detach an Xyz material, you take no effect damage
from any of your opponent's cards. That's a nice
little bonus. This card combos well with Attack The
Moon!!. Obviously, Soldier belongs in a Rock deck,
so if you use a Rock deck, im sure you can find room
for this guy.
