All right, after a vacation from the great Pojosama, we return to our Top 10 Countdown from Judgement of the Light. Filling the #8 spot is Bujin Yamato, a Level 4, Light attributed, Beast-Warrior(?) Monster with 1800 attack and 200 defense.  It's going to take a bit to figure out if a Bujin Deck can be any good.  I'm not sure yet, but this is one of, if not, the focal cards in that Deck.  Light is good, Chaos food, Honest compatible, and 1800 attack is very good too.  The 200 defense part sucks but it's not the end of the world.  Once per turn, during your End Phase, you can end a Bujin Monster from your Deck to your Hand, and then discard a card from your Hand to the Graveyard.  The Bujin Deck likes to cycle from place to place, and this guy likes to give you resources, in Monster form.  You're likely using two, maybe even three, in the Deck.  We'll see in time if the Deck is any good.

Art:  5/5  Not sure how that's a Beast-Warrior, but he's pretty sick

Today, we are going to review Bujin Yamato and take a look at the Bujin archetype. The light attribute Bujins come in three flavors – Bujin, Bujintei, and Bujingi, and are of the Beast-Warrior, Beast, and Winged Beast variety. The main players of this archetype are Bujin Yamato and Mikazuchi. The other 10 Bujintei and Bujingi monsters have effects that support them. These effects range from destroying spells or traps or face-up cards, negating effects, direct attacks, stopping attacks, piercing, and changing monsters to defense with 0 points. These effects are activated by sending them to the graveyard from the hand or by banishing it from the graveyard.

The fist thing we notice about Bujin Yamato is that it is a light Beast-Warrior, so we can use Fire Formation Tenki to search for it and cards like Honest and Horn of the Phantom Beast besides Bujintei Crane to boost its attack. The theme of the Bujin deck is to use the effects of monsters as a tool box to deal with your opponent’s field and then to Xyz summon its two boss monsters Kagutsuchi and Susanowo, so it is going to be monster heavy. It also has support cards like Bujin Regalia – The Mirror (Cold Wave), Bujincarnation, Beckoning Light, and Bujin Regalia – The Sword for support.

Now that you have been informed, let me just say that I am not sold on the Bujin archetype as it is too easily stopped with the plethora of Drain Trap cards and is too dependant on having the right combination of monsters in your hand or grave. It is also very slow and lacks the draw power that top tier decks have. The one plus that they have is in the ability to search for the cards they need. Bujin Yamato lets you search for the right tool that you need (any Bujin monster) and can send a Bujin that you need in the graveyard to the grave, thus dong everything that is needed to make the archetype work. Yamato is a key part to the Bujin deck. If the game slows down, Bujin decks may even be decent, but I doubt they will ever become top tier.

Today's Card of the Day Review, which also falls on #8 of Pojo's Top 10 Judgment of the Light list is Bujin Yamato, the Ultra Rare card from this set.

This is a Level 4 LIGHT Beast-Warrior monster with a solid 1800 ATK and 200 DEF with a simple effect that allows you to search your deck for a Bujin monster from your Deck as long as you send one card from your hand to the Graveyard afterwards during each of your End Phases.

This card is rather unique for this game. When you look at a monster like this, the first thing you would think that this is like the Stratos for the deck, the searcher if you will. And if you do, you are correct in a way. However, with the way the deck operates, Yamato is much more. Since the many different Bujin support cards works on Beast-Warrior Bujin monsters and Yamato is the only non-Xyz one available at the moment, he is also your win condition, sort to speak.

The goal of the deck is basically to play Yamato and basically protect it. Fortunately, you have a ton of protection for it. Quijin would help destroy face-up cards, you have a card that operates like an Honest so you have Battle Phase protection, and various other cards. Also, since Yamato can put all of these cards in the right places due to its effect, they are available 24/7. Lastly, it is searchable via Fire Formation - Tenki so that adds a lot of consistency for this card

Overall, this is a good card on paper and the best card of the deck if you are running Bujins. This is an absolute need at 3 for anyone running this deck, which means this card will almost always keep its price tag and is worth looking into in the near future.

Traditional Format: 1/5 (I doubt it will make it there. Still, it's worth trying with 3 Honest-like cards and other protection-based weapons.)
Advanced Format: 3/5 (As I said before, Yamato is a weird one. Basically a 1800 ATK win condition. I swear this game has changed too much for my liking.)

We apologize for the personal week off Pojo had last week, as well as for the limited amount of reviews for this week, but hey, at least before then, we were able to shoot you a small look of our Top 10 for Judgment of the Light. We’re coming back at you full speed and leading the charge for this week is our golden Bujin Yamato.

I kinda got surprised when I saw Yamato up this high on the list, but I do admit, Yamato is the main beatstick for the Bujin Deck, and in fact the Deck practically revolves around him. His effect allows you to regulate the Bujins in your Deck. The other Bujin monsters are a mix of Beasts and Winged Beasts with bountiful different effects that activate either straight from your hand or by being banishing out of the Graveyard, and Yamato fulfills both of these roles. The longer he survives, the more you search! Also, the card you discard doesn’t HAVE to be a Bujin card, so there’s some flexibility if necessary. Powered up by the bonuses provided for the other Bujins, Yamato can be the only monster you summon and it’s fully plausible he can bring you to victory. However, you also want to use his effect to load your hand up with monsters to prepare you for a possible impending Xyz play (and after you use Yamato up for that you can summon a new one).

Also, Yamato is a Beast-Warrior, a Type that has been gotten a lot of love lately, due to the great amount of Fire Formation cards that can boost his ATK. None of them are mandatory, but Fire Formation – Tenki would be a great help, as it searches for any Beast-Warrior (including Yamato) right out of the Deck so you can start attacking with him and using his effect as soon as possible. If you’re making a Deck focused on Yamato, you may also be interested to throwing in a few Fire Fist monsters that can work with your Fire Formation cards; the most important ones would be Bear and Gorilla, which lets you play a Fire Formation card out of your Deck once they destroy a monster or attack directly (respectively) and then after you search out your Yamato, your Fire Fist monster will destroy a monster or Spell/Trap (respectively).

Trad: 2.5/5 (I think Bujins can be consistent but they’re somewhat slow which is big)

Adv: 4.25/5 (almost impossible to play Bujin without him)

Aesthetics: 4/5 Judgment of the Light has given us eight Bujin monsters, each composed of yellow energy (except Bujingi Varg, which is blue), as well as two Bujin Spells and a Bujin Trap. The Bujintei are the War God Emperors, Light Beast-Warriors that reside in the Plains of the High Heavens. Susuanowo, the Shinto God of the seas, winds, and underworld, was the strongest of them all. His power was so incredible, all the other gods were jealous of him. All the tension caused by the suspicion angered the Supreme God, who then banished Susanowo down from the heavens to the mortal world, locking his strength in five Bujintei, the War God Containers. Susanowo renamed himself Yamato Takeru, and traveled the world searching for his Bujintei...except Varg…Varg belongs to someone else. This is why all Beast-Warrior Bujins say “You can only control 1 ”. The Bujintei themselves are Beasts and Winged-Beasts that carry Yamato’s power, which is why you can discard or banish them to give him protection (aside from the lupine Bujingi, Wolf and Varg, which accompany Yamato on the field). This story can be seen through the Bujin Spell Cards.

Philosophy Corner: So for the past three weeks (not counting last week), I’ve been having problems getting online, so I couldn’t write my reviews from Comics Hero King Arthur and onward. However, I’m now totally back in business, and if you’re in the mood for great reading, I encourage you my reviews for those three-and-a-half weeks. The only problem is that I’m checking over the pages now and I can see Pojo didn’t put mine up yet, so I guess maybe wait a day or two… Sorry!

Hey guys today we're going to be doing Bujin Yamato. This is the heart and soul for this deck opening game. It sets up all of your plays for the future while being  a nice sturdy body (1800 atk) and being Beast-Warrior is amazing because it is now searchable. Unfortunately you an only have one on the the field, but  guess and upside is that you can use his effect every end phase. Overall a strong card for a decent Archetype.

We continue our Top 10 Judgment of the Light countdown with our #8 card, and this one is a personal favorite of mine. Say hello to Bujin Yamato:

“Level 4
LIGHT
Beast-Warrior / Effect
1800 ATK / 200 DEF
Once per turn, during your End Phase: You can add 1 "Bujin" monster from your Deck to your hand, then send 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard. You can only control 1 "Bujin Yamato".”

Anyone who’s seen my videos on YouTube will know I am a huge fan of the Lightsworns. I love the Bujin because their basic theme reminds me of a less derpy and more consistent Lightsworn.

But again, I digress. Bujin Yamato is the heart and soul of the Bujin Deck. It simply will not run without him. For those that are not aware, the Bujin focus on supporting 1 Beast-Warrior-Type Bujin monster on the field (and until we get Shadow Specters, the only one is Yamato) using the Bujingi monsters, either from hand or Graveyard depending on what you use. These monsters range anywhere from negating targeting effects to destroying face-up cards to being a themed Honest (like Kalut but a little better).

Now that you have a basic idea of how the Bujins work, you will be able to see why Yamato is so important. During your End Phase, he will add 1 “Bujin” monster from your Deck to your hand, and then you send any 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard. So, if you have a Bujin in hand that you want in the Graveyard, search for one you want in hand then discard the one you want in Graveyard. If you have one you want in hand and none you want in Graveyard, add one to your hand than immediately discard it.

Yamato is what keeps the entire Bujin Deck together, as he sets up every major play you can do. I personally expect Bujin to be a high level Deck come September, and Yamato will be absolutely necessary.

Oh, and did I mention it’s searchable by “Fire Formation – Tenki”?

Traditional : 3.5/5 (I feel Bujin will be a little too slow in Traditional, but he’s still important if you’re crazy enough to run the Deck there)
Advanced: 4.5/5

Art: 4/5

Up Next: The Ice Barrier cards were initially translated as Ice Boundary.
