Star Eater is a beast of a Synchro Monster, and has the second best picture in this set. This is a Light attributed, Dragon type Monster, with 3200 attack and 2800 defense. Star Eater is a Level 11 Synchro Monster, Synchro Summoned with one Tuner and one or more non-Tuner Monsters. Level 11 likely means three Monsters, as even a Level 4 Tuner means you still need a Level 7 Monster to pull it off with just two. Star Eater is a shutdown Monster, and has a lot of great things going for him. He can only be Special Summoned by Synchro Summon. and not be Special Summoned in other ways. It's Synchro Summon cannot be negated. When Synchro Summoned, cards and effects cannot be activated. Furthermore, if this card attacks, it is unaffected by effects until the end of the Damage Step.

Welcome to another card review!!  Today we are reviewing a new Xyz monster that earned the #3 spot on our Judgment of Light List.  It’s the first level 11 Synchro Monster ever released and it’s really good.  Let’s see what this card can do.

Star Eater
Attirbute: Light
Types: Dragon/Synchro/Effect
Level 11
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Must be Synchro Summoned, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. This card's Synchro Summon cannot be negated. When Synchro Summoned, cards and effects cannot be activated. If this card attacks, it is unaffected by other card effects until the end of the Damage Step.
ATK/3200                                                                               DEF/2800

So this monster may seem pretty difficult to summon because it’s a level 11 monster but it’s actually not too hard to summon.  There are a lot of ways to summon this monster.  You can simply use a Debris Dragon with any level 7 monster and summon this monster easily.  The best part about this monster is that it has a great effect and really great stats.  Its summon can’t be negated and your opponent can’t respond to this monster’s summon with any of their cards.  What makes this monster even better is that this card is unaffected by other card effects when it attacks.    That is just too good.  All of these effects really limit amount of outs your opponent can have to Star Eater.  A simple Compulsory Evacuation Device or Dark  Hole  can take care of this monster but you might not always have these cards in hand when this comes out on the field.  So overall this card is great.  I don’t think it deserves to be this high on this list but it is definitely one of the best cards from this pack.

Star Eater
LIGHT/Dragon/Synchro/Effect/Level11/3200/2800
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters

At number 3 of our Top 10 cars from Judgement of Light is Star Eater, the first Level 11 Synchro Monster. In fact level 11 for some reason is a very rare level in Yu-Gi-Oh with around 5 cards being of this level.

Still Star Eater is a generic Light/Dragon with 3200/2800 DEF which is actually pretty weak making it the 2nd weakest level 11 after Yubel: Terror Incarnate. Still as always weak stats for a level means a good effect. Well the bad news is that terrible condition,” Must be Synchro Summoned, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways.” So that’s a lot of its playability gone. Still it as loads of protection, mainly having the same summoning protection as Obelisk the Tormentor so all your hard work isn’t going to be ruined the minute you summon it. Always it has protection when it attacks, so that helps as well.

But then things go downhill, it has no protection outside these, so it is completely vulnerable during the rest of your turn and all of your opponent’s turn. So it makes you really wonder if it is worth the whole summoning thing, when other synchro monsters are easier to get out.
Overall, a lot of good protection for when you get it out, but the low stats means that it isn’t really worth it.

We are down to our #3 card in our Top 10 Judgment of the Light countdown. Today we have Star Eater, the first Level 11 Synchro:

Level 11
LIGHT
Dragon / Synchro / Effect
3200 ATK / 2800 DEF
1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
Must be Synchro Summoned, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. This card's Synchro Summon cannot be negated. When Synchro Summoned, cards and effects cannot be activated. If this card attacks, it is unaffected by other card effects until the end of the Damage Step.

This guy is strong, that’s for sure. His summon can’t be stopped in any way. Not by Bottomless, not by Warning. Nothing.

Likewise, when he attacks, he’s unaffected by other card effects until the end of the Damage Step. So Dimensional Prison and Mirror Force fail against him. Beware though, that he can still fall prey to Compulse and Mirror Force (when he’s not attacking), and unlike our buddy Armades, he does not stop Honest or Bujingi Crane from working.

Despite these drawbacks, he’s a solid card. And with backrow likely to be prevalent next format (whether you’re under the OCG list with triple Mirror Force or the TCG list with Heavy Storm banned), he’ll probably be a huge player in the game for the next few months.

Traditional: 5/5 (only Level 11 we’ve got, so he’s good here too I guess)
Advanced: 5/5

Art: 4/5 (My teammate says he looks like the Crimson Dragon. I don’t really see it)

This is, in my opinion, the best card in the set. In our age of the Xyz, the Judgment of the Light Booster Pack has given a revival to the Tuner/Synchro mechanic, and I would say it's new-and-improved. After all, five of the eight new Synchros are on our Top 10. I particularly like Star Eater for its Level. I like to have a good mix of Synchros in my Extra Deck; all too common is the situation where I have a Tuner out but I can't perform a Synchro Summon because I don't have the right Levels, or all possible Synchro options are too weak. Star Eater is a brute with its 3200 ATK, yet it's easy to summon, making it the best out of the five Level 11 monsters.

It is very easy to play Star Eater with a Synchro combination of 3 + 4 + 4. It's easier to summon than an Egyptian God and almost just as strong! Usually the Level 3 monster is your Tuner, and your only other Synchro option is Black Rose Dragon, which may not always be ideal. Another part I love about it is that you're allowed to do 3 + 8, and although that won't happen a lot outside certain Decks, it's nice to have the privilege. I threw this card into practically all my Decks (admittedly, my Light and Darkness Dragon Deck does it the easiest, but that's only because my Delta Flyer Tuner makes it so easy).

Despite how 3200 ATK is low for Level 11, it's still higher than all commonly played (Level 8) monsters. Its effect puts the fritz on almost all the popular Traps: Solemn Warning, Solemn Judgment (which will become banned), Bottomless Trap Hole, Dimensional Prison, Mirror Force (well kinda). In fact, Star Eater is part of the reason why Compulsory Evacuation Device has been seeing a rise in usage, because it's one of the few Traps that can hurt it badly. So what? You can't beat this with Traps. You can't beat this in battle. The effect might grow in significance for the September 2013 format due to Heavy Storm's ban and Compulsory Evacuation Device's limitation, but I'm not completely sure. What I do know is that if you can't get out a monster effect or Spell to stop this immediately, it will run you over. Unfortunately, there are a lot of cards that can do this or even wrest control of Star Eater, but it doesn't change how this is the only Level 11 Synchro and is a strong one at that.

Trad: 3/5 (I can't see how it can be useful, but it can't be bad)
Adv: 4.5/5 (very simple monster but it packs a punch and it's hard to destroy)
Aesthetics: 3/5 I dislike the name change. The Japanese design suggested this dragon was born from the energy of stars, while the English name literally says it eats them. The translated Japanese name called it Starform or Celestial Dragon, and that's something beautiful, and the English version just feeds off them. Last year we took a look at Number 9: Dyson Sphere, which is like an artificial colony powered directly by a star. Well look at this guy, this dragon is larger than a star. The star isn't its parent, it's like the dragon goes from star to star to siphon off its energy. It makes it sound like a villain. I mean, Galactus from Marvel, Fallen from Transformers, and the Saiyans from Dragon Ball all made a living off wiping out celestial bodies; it's a common villain motif. Imagine if Stardust Dragon's English name was Starmageddon Skeleton. There's just no beauty.

Philosophy Corner: When one of your friends gets a new boyfriend or girlfriend, you usually get excited, and I think it's often for one of two reasons. Either it's because you know what that feeling is like and you're glad that they get to have the same happiness as you do, or you don't know that feeling and you can't wait to have the same happiness they have. Then again, it is just as likely my theory is completely wrong and you get happy simply because it's cute watching your friend fall in love.
