The penultimate card in our countdown is Brotherhood of the Fire Fist Rooster. Rooster is a Level 3 Monster, Fire attributed of course, with 1500 attack and 100 defense, and naturally a Beast-Warrior. When this card is Special Summoned by the effect of a Fire Fist Monster, you can add a Fire Fist Monster from your Deck to your Hand. Said effect can only be used once per turn. Once per turn, you can send a face-up Fire Formation Magic/Trap card you control from the Graveyard to set a replacement Magic/Trap card of said type from your Deck to the Field. So he's relatively strong for Level 3, gains an effect when Special Summoned, and also works combos like his brethern from earlier this week.

Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Rooster

At number 2 of our Top 10 cards from Judgement of the Light is Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Rooster. Rooster is a FIRE/Beast-Warrior, like all BOTFF monsters and has 1500 ATK and 100 DEF. The stats are fine for a level 3 and though 100 DEF is very poor, but FIRE monsters don’t really care.
Rooster’s effect is very good, being the archetype’s main searcher and thankfully there is no condition on level or stats which makes this all the more playable. Granted it only gets the effect when it is special summon but this expansion has released a few Fire Fists that special summon other monsters.

However the searching does stop there, by sending a Fire Formation card you control to the grave, you can set another 1 from your deck. This allows you to replace a card that is no longer useful with one that is better suited to your current situation. So Rooster is a double searcher, which is a great thing to see.

Overall a great addition to Fire Fist decks, having to distinctive and great search effects, makes this a must for Fire Fist players. Of course it isn’t much good outside of Fire Fist decks.

The end is near. We’re now down to our #2 card in the Top 10 Judgment of the Light Countdown. Today’s card is none other than Brotherhood of the Fire Fist – Rooster:

Level 3
FIRE
Beast-Warrior / Effect
1500 ATK / 100 DEF

I’m not even gonna lie; I have no idea why this card isn’t #1 on the list. It is without a doubt the chase card of the entire set (or at least it was until the TCG banlist happened, but we’ll get into that later). So, what makes it so good?

Well, for one, it does a LOT, if you couldn’t tell by the small font. Upon Special Summon by another Fire Fist, Rooster will let you add another Fire Fist from your Deck to your hand. Ideally, the main play of the 3-Axis Fire Fist Deck is to summon Spirit to revive a used Leopard, make a Horse Prince, and use it to summon Rooster from the Deck, putting another Spirit in your hand and preparing you to do it all over again next turn. And to go even further, Rooster can send a face-up Fire Formation to the Graveyard (such as a used Tenki) to instantly set another one (like a Tensen, or another Tenki).

This play was very easy and very consistent, and was the major power play of the 3-Axis Fire Fist Deck. But alas, we got Rooster a little too late. While the OCG and TCG banlists do differ for once, both did a significant job in hurting the 3-Axis Deck. The former Limited Rooster itself, which, while painful, did not kill 3-Axis Fire Fist; they could still make consistent plays, but would have to rely on Vulcan the Divine instead of Horse Prince. The Deck was not as fortunate in the TCG; Rooster’s partner in crime, Spirit, was Limited instead. This essentially kills all chances 3-Axis Fire Fist had in competing. Ah well, I guess 4-Axis will be the way to go, with our good buddy Wolfbark.

So yeah, if the great gods of Konami had not decided to hit the 3-Axis Deck (which was entirely justified; the Deck was already making an impact in Japan), this card would easily get a perfect score from me. But seeing as circumstance has changed, I just can’t give it to it.

Traditional: 2/5
Advanced: 3/5 (If you live in Japan-land, then I’d still give this card a 5/5, but I assume a majority of our readers are TCG players?)

Art: 5/5 (This is one of the better looking Fire Fists in my opinion)

Tomorrow: I hate bugs too.

There are a total of four Fire Fist monsters that can summon Rooster, so that you can use the effect to search out any Fire Fist monster immediately. When I Normal Summon Spirit, it summons a Fire monster with under 200 DEF from my Grave, which Rooster fits perfectly. If I feel like it, I can use Rooster's second effect to throw away a Fire Formation card to nab another one from my Deck. Usually, I would be recycling an expired Tenki to set another Fire Formation Spell straight from my Deck and flipping it up immediately. Usually this is a second Tenki, meaning I get ANOTHER search! After that, I can do a Level 6 Synchro into Horse Prince, who then summons yet another Level 3 Fire monster out of my Deck. Usually this is Fire Fist - Leopard, which sets yet another Fire Formation card from my Deck. This can be done in reverse too; use Spirit to summon any Level 3 monster, then Synchro Summon Horse Prince. Since Horse Prince is also a Fire Fist, you can Special Summon Rooster and still get your effect.

Dragon is a Level 4 Fire Fist that can rather easily summon other Fire Fists from out of the Graveyard. It's not as smooth as the methods described in the above paragraph, but it's still handy. When Fire Fist - Tiger King is destroyed, I can give up three Fire Formation cards on the field to summon two Fire Fists from the deck of the same ATK. This is meant to summon Level 4 monsters to re-Xyz Tiger King, but I guess technically you can do a pair of Roosters, which will search you one Fire Fist monster. Then, if you can have out another Fire Formation card, your twin Roosters can recycle things twice, potentially activating two Tenki for two extra searches, or Tenken for extra summons. It's not very practical, though.

Fire Fists are commonly played in one of two ways: Third and Fourth Axes. Respectively, the Deck focuses on either Level 3 or Level 4 monsters. Obviously, Rooster thrives in the Third Axis, but I do suppose he's workable in the Fourth Axis, especially if you splash in some Spirit and Leopard. Also, being a Fire monster with less than 200 DEF, you can search him with Flamvell Firedog and Hedgehog, but that's not particularly important.
Trad: 2/5 (cool, I guess, but I don't know how Fire Fists work in this format)
Adv: 4/5 (Spirit's limitation will hurt the score, which ironically is not as hurtful as Rooster's own limitation in the OCG)

Aesthetics: All Fire Fist monsters are based off of the "36 Heavenly Spirits of the 108 Liangshan Heroes" in Shi Nai'an's novel The Water Margin published in China around year 1300. It talks about 108 rebels that band together to combat their corrupt government and specifically focuses on 36 of them. Rooster is based off Spirit #15, Dong Ping, who is known as the General of Double Spears for his two weapons, which you can sorta see in Rooster's artwork (although they're not actually spears). He was known profoundly as being "refined and cultured" for his multiple talents and being very popular with women. Initially against the Liangshan cause, he ended up being one of the Five Tiger Generals, the only one not to have a rank better than 10. Dong Ping's name in Japanese is Tō Hei, and "chicken" in Japanese is kei, so turning him into a cock is meant to be some pun.

Philosophy Corner: What if upon our deaths our consciousness get transported to an alternate reality where everything appears to be the same and we keep on living our lives without realizing we've died at all?
