We continue our newly-Forbidden cards week with
another card that has gone straight from 3 to 0.
This one was sometimes called the Spellbook of
Judgment for Dragon Rulers, and while it isn’t
entirely accurate, it’s pretty close. Say hello to
Super Rejuvenation:
Quick-Play Spell Card
During the End Phase of the turn this card is
activated, draw 1 card from your Deck for each
Dragon-Type monster discarded from your hand and/or
Tributed during this turn.
This card has a history of abuse, and is an example
of a mediocre card that slowly became broken as the
game evolved (think Cold Wave or Rescue Cat). Its
first widespread use that I know of was in the Deep
Draw Exodia Deck that utilized Trade-In, Cards of
Consonance, Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and The White
Stone of Legend. With all of that discarding, Super
Rejuvenation could easily draw you a lot of other
cards. And if you drew another in the End Phase you
could immediately activate it. This Deck, while
easily the most consistent Exodia Deck at the time
(if not ever), was not enough of a threat to make
Super Rejuvenation banworthy.
But the Dragon Ruler Deck was.
Each of the four baby Dragon Rulers discarded to
activate their effects. Considering how easy it was
to search them out, getting four to six cards off of
a Super Rejuvenation was very common. Two at minimum
was guaranteed.
The Dragon Ruler Deck was known for a nearly endless
amount of resources, but this card helped make sure
they never ran out. While the banning of all four
baby Dragons means that Super Rejuvenation wouldn’t
have been able to be used in that Deck anymore
anyway, it’s banning is justified, as it is a card
that really restricted future card design. Like
Spellbook of Judgment, I don’t think this one will
be missed much (unless you play Exodia, at which
point I suggest you stop playing Solitaire).
Traditional: 5/5 (Dragon Ruler can probably still be
solid here)
Advanced: BANNED (5/5 when legal)
Art: 2/5 (Cave Dragon being healed. It’s honestly
not spectacular in my opinion)
Tomorrow: NO!!
