Top 10 Cards of 2013 - #3 - Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos
- #LTGY-EN040

If this card is in your hand or Graveyard: You can banish a total of 2 FIRE and/or Dragon-Type monsters from your hand and/or Graveyard, except this card; Special Summon this card. During your opponent's End Phase, if this card was Special Summoned: Return it to the hand. You can discard this card and 1 FIRE monster to the Graveyard, then target 1 card on the field; destroy that target. If this card is banished: You can add 1 FIRE Dragon-Type monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use 1 "Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos" effect per turn, and only once that turn.

Shifting back to Elemental Dragons, Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos is great. We have a Level 7, Fire attributed Dragon, with 2800 attack (excellent) and 1800 defense (decent). This Monster has the same return to the Hand when Special Summoned effect, regardless of by its own effect.

Also, it has the same Special Summon requirement, as opposed to tributing, by sending two Fire and/or Dragon type Monsters from your Hand and/or Graveyard. Now, by discarding this card and one other Fire Monster from your Hand to the Graveyard you can destroy one card on the Field. Note you do target said card before destroying it.

You also note, when this card is removed from play, you can add a Dragon, Fire type Monster from your Deck to your Hand. The trick here, like before, Fire actually makes this Dragon fairly difficult to play in Dragons. I'd play this guy in Fire Fist, and maybe even Laval, but aside from that, he might be difficult to play.

Hey everyone.  Today's review covers our #3 card of 2013, Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos.

Like my review on Tidal, this is going to be to the point.  Blaster's main characteristics that differentiate him from Tidal are his 2800 attack, the highest of all the E-Dragons, and his destruction effect, arguably the most used one.

Outside of those abilities, he's the same card as the other three dragons.  He works well also in Fire Fists and Battlin' Boxers, but I'd stay away from using him in Fire Kings; you need your graveyard intact, plus you have Garunix/Phoenix to make Rank 8 monsters, so Blaster is almost irrelevant there anyway.  Great card, probably my favorite of the E-Dragons, though I'm not sad to see him go to 1.  The decks that run him use him as a bonus monster and E-Dragons are hardly playable, so you can likely get by with one.

Hello Pojo Fans,

The final week of the year is here (or at least a few days of it) and we start it off with a bang! At #3 is Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos. This was the first of the “Dragon Ruler” monsters I saw. Blaster is the strongest of the Dragon Rulers by means of attack, but the weakest by defense. A Level 7 Dragon, 2800ATK/1800DEF, Blaster (like all Dragon Rulers) has a mountain of text to read through. “ If this card is in your hand or Graveyard: You can banish a total of 2 FIRE and/or Dragon-Type monsters from your hand and/or Graveyard, except this card; Special Summon this card. You can only use 1 "Blaster, Dragon Ruler of Infernos" effect per turn, and only once that turn.”

Ability to be Special Summoned from your hand or Graveyard is very good. Banish any two combinations of Fire or dragon monsters from your hand or Graveyard (or one from either) and this big guy hits the field. As the game progresses, your grave is going to be filling up with dragons unless you are removing them just as quickly. This guy late game could be what brings you the win, 2800 attack is pretty hard to deal with in a top-decking war. His defense isn't that much of a negative, outweighed in my view by his attack. If you have another Fire-type monster in your hand, you can discard Blaster and that Fire monster to destroy a card on the field. Discard Blaster and another Blaster to destroy a card and set up Blaster next turn or fill the grave for another Dragon Ruler to use them. If Blaster is removed, you can search your Deck for another Fire, Dragon-Type monster, and add it to your hand. Blaster usually will replace himself, but there's also Decoy Dragon and Masked Dragon to think about (the latter helping with Level 7 or higher monsters like the Dragon Rulers and REDMD). Gold Sarco removes this guy, lets you grab another of him, and in two turns you bring him to your hand.

Only being able to activate one of the effects of Blaster per turn also limits its ability to be broken. At the End Phase of your opponents turn Blaster will spring back to your hand if he's out on the field...that sucks, but Blaster won't be spending too much time on the field. Likely you will be Xyzing with another Dragon Ruler to make something to gain even more advantage. The only way I can see the spring-back to the hand effect hurting you, is if late game you don't have any more dragons to remove from your hand or grave. There won't be too many Fire-type monsters aside from Blaster that you'll be using in a dragon deck (unless you use the before mentioned Decoy Dragon or Masked Dragon). Most of the time you will discard Blaster alongside another Blaster to kill a card on the field (but doing that will be worth it).

I thought when the first Ban List came in September that the baby forms and the Dragon Rulers should all be limited to 1 each. The babies get banned, Rulers are now limited all to 1 each, support cards are banned or limited to one, and the deck will still be competitive because duelists adapt.

Blaster Dragon Ruler of Infernos

The only cards you can fairly compare this to are the other Dragon Rulers. When it comes to the stats, Blaster's impressive 2800 ATK trumps Tidal's 2600 and outclasses Tempest's meager 2400. His lacking DEF of 1800 rarely is ever an issue. And while Redox is durable at 3000 DEF, you're much better off with offense.

In terms of effects, since Blaster can Special Summon itself from the graveyard, it's discard effect is essentially a 1-for-1 removal which beats Tidal's milling effect an Tempest's restricted searching effect. Blaster, in the dragon-ruling family is only dwarfed by the revival ability of his craggy counterpart (Redox). The searching ability upon it being banished (like the others) is also another way to ensure this card pays for itself. And this card is also well accomodated with the speed of Traditional Format.

With the recent Limited/Forbidden lists, Blaster does not stand as tall as he used to, but don't let that discourage you from using him. Definitely a very good card worth using in both FIRE decks and Dragon decks.
