Today's Card of the Day Review is Fool of
Prophecy, a Super Rare card from the Cosmo Blazer
booster set.
This card has 1600 ATK, which is pretty weak in
the general scheme of things, along with it being an
EARTH-Attribute Spellcaster. It does get the benefit
from all of the Spellbook as well, which is a nice
gift for this card so a Spellbook of Power would
make this 2600 ATK, not bad. The ATK is a bit weak
so the effect needs to make up for it. Fortunately,
it does.
This can help you get to its transformation,
Reaper of Prophecy, in pretty quick order. The 1st
effect allows you to send one Spellbook card from
your deck straight to the Graveyard. Pretty simple
really. If you pitch a Spellbook of Secrets, you can
use a Spellbook of the Master in your hand, target
said Spellbook of Secrets, and search your deck for
any Spellbook you need. It's a nifty trick whenever
you open up with a hand where you don't have a
Spellbook of Secrets.
Despite this, you can even use this effect to
dump any different-named Spellbook to the graveyard
to help boost Reaper of Prophecy's effects whenever
it comes out, which is a nice bonus......and another
boost for this card because it would help lead to
its 2nd effect.
"During the End Phase of the turn this card
activated this effect: You can Tribute this card;
Special Summon 1 Level 5 or higher DARK Spellcaster-Type
monster from your Deck. You must have 5 or more "Spellbook"
Spell Cards with different names in your Graveyard
to activate and to resolve this effect."
Pretty much, if you can get 5 different
Spellbooks in your Graveyard, you can trade in Fool
of Prophecy directly for Reaper of Prophecy from
your deck. Even sweeter, Reaper of Prophecy will get
all 3 of its effects as well. Unfortunately, until
you do, it does sit on the field as a vulnerable
1600 ATK monster so you want this effect to go off
the turn you drop it, give or take. Good news is
that Spellbook of Life does work on this so even if
that were to happen, you still have access to its
effects.
However, keep in mind that while Reaper would be
the prime target for Fool's effects that it is not
the only viable target. Dark Magician, Dark Magician
Girl, Delg the Dark Monarch, Prophecy Destroyer, and
many others can be summoned via this card's effects,
making it a lot more flexible if the player is
willing to give it some creative thinking.
All-in-all, this card is indeed pretty good, if
not a bit slow. This card can easily get better as
we get more DARK Spellcasters so keep a close eye on
this card as time passes by. Each DARK Spellcaster
we get adds to Fool of Prophecy and Reaper of
Prophecy's dark arsenal.
Traditional Format: 1/5 (Too slow for such a
format. May be too slow even for Reaper.)
Advanced Format: 3/5 (It's not bad at all as a 1-2
of, depending on the player preference. This card
does need some good testing before you just throw it
in there.)
