Today's Card of the Day, which marks as #6
overall in Pojo's Top 10 Cosmo Blazer cards of the
set, happens to be Reaper of Prophecy.
Reaper of Prophecy can be looked at as the 2nd
boss monster of the Prophecy archetype. However, if
you were to compare the slick Reaper to the esteemed
High Priestess of Prophecy, you will notice a ton of
differences between the two. In fact, the 2 cards is
so different to the point where it is best to run
Reaper in its own dedicated build and leave High
Priestess to another build for herself. In
hindsight, I really doubt Konami has made these 2
cards to work alongside one another but, in truth, I
will leave that choice up to the player.
For those who want to know the effect of this
card, look no further:
"When this card is Normal or Special Summoned:
You can activate this effect; apply as many effects
as possible, based on the number of "Spellbook"
Spell Cards with different names in your Graveyard.
You can only use the effect of "Reaper of Prophecy"
once per turn.
• 3 or more: This card gains 600 ATK.
• 4 or more: Add 1 "Spellbook" Spell Card from your
Deck to your hand.
• 5 or more: Special Summon 1 Level 5 or higher DARK
Spellcaster-Type monster from your Deck."
This card, being that it's DARK and Spellcaster,
gives it access to a lot of indirect support. Any
DARK support from Phantom Darkness will make this
card a lot more playable as you can play Allure of
Darkness and banish it after you draw 2 cards if you
need the extra draw power. Magical Dimension can
easily Special Summon this card on the field while
blowing up an annoying monster along the way. This
also avoids your precious Reaper from getting hit
via Torrential Tribute and Bottomless Trap Hole
since the last thing to happen is the monster being
destroyed, not Reaper being Special Summoned.
So there is a lot going the Reaper's way.
It's a shame there is even more thanks to his
oh-so-devious effects.
To get this card to be the strongest it can
possibly be, you need 5 or more different Spellbooks
in your Graveyard. It is easy to get 5 Spellbooks in
your graveyard. 5 different ones, on the other hand,
is clearly more difficult. You can do this by
milling (which you can use Lyla, Lumina, or a
combination of both. You also have access to the
Fool of Prophecy for selective milling) or careful
use of your Spellbooks (like Secret --> Master -->
Tower will give you 3 different Spellbooks if Tower
gets destroyed right there).
Good thing the card is quite usable even without
5 different Spellbooks in the Graveyard.
If you successfully gets 3 in your Graveyard,
your Reaper comes out at a beautiful 2600 ATK, 100
ATK stronger than the High Priestess. A small but
important advantage as this means Gem-Knight Pearl
can only hope to trade blows with the Reaper instead
of enjoying victory. You also don't have to fear
Number 39: Utopia since he is forced to block your
attacks in hope of a reversal. And yet people
actually thought Number 39 will bring them "hope"?
Such feeble-minded fools!
If you get 4 different Spellbooks in your
Graveyard, your Reaper not only get his 2600 ATK he
so very need to reap souls with but he can even
search extra Spellbooks to join your hand.....for
FREE! Oh, how nice of him. I never thought a Reaper
would be so kind as to give you gifts worth having.
If I was him, I'll give you the gift that gives on
giving.....
Be glad it was him and not me.
If you are so skillful enough that you found a
way to get FIVE different Spellbooks in your
Graveyard, you get all of his great gifts for you to
enjoy and your everyone else to hate: 2600 ATK, free
searches, and he even gets to bring additional party
animals to join in on the fun. After all, what could
possibly be more fun than 1 Reaper hunting souls? 2
Reapers hunting souls together in unison!
Unfortunately, there's a catch to that Reaper
hunting party. You can only use the effect of Reaper
once per turn. Take note, all of you Reaper hunting
maniacs because this restriction is more restrictive
than you give it credit for. Why? Because you can
only use 1 of the 2 Ignition Effects. If you use
one, you can't use the other.
Sorry but Reaper can't search Spellbooks and
recruit party animals both during the same turn.
He's the Reaper, not Santa Claus. You better go see
Diablo or the Lich King for that. If you do go make
a visit to them, I wish you the best of luck. You
are going to need it.
However, despite these limitations, Reaper can do
you a whole lot of good. After all, there is a ton
of monsters you can summon with Reaper's 3rd
effects. You got Prophecy Destroyer that can be
revived by banished 3 of the 5 Spellbooks given to
make Reaper the almighty being that he has. You
could recruit another Reaper of Prophecy so you can
swing 5200 ATK of awesome power at your opponent.
You could bring some sexy to the party by calling on
the adorable Dark Magician Girl. If you want
graveyard control, look no further than Delg the
Dark Monarch.
You can even throw-down old-school style with the
Dark Magician himself. After all, we all can use a
little "Dark Magic Attack!" in our lives. Simon He
agrees.
And this is merely the tip of the iceberg.
But what? One of my examples doesn't make sense!
Delg the Dark Monarch can't attack on the turn it is
Summoned. It's useless.
Maybe you need to pay attention more. You got 2
Level 6 monsters on your side of the field. I think
you can do something special with that alignment in
play.
If you guessed "Xyz Summon", you are right. You
got access to Photon Strike Bounzer (which just got
a very accessible Super reprint that we all come to
love), Sword Breaker, and Number 25: Force Focus at
your beck and call and to think that only cost you
just 1 Reaper on the field to pull that off. If we
ever get any Rank 6 that requires DARK monsters or
Spellcaster monsters, even more fun for us.
Especially if we ever get Magi Magi Magician Gal
in the TCG. Unfortunately, due to outside forces, we
may be waiting for a while for that card's release.
It's truly such a shame.
To wrap this very long review: This card has a
ungodly amount of potential and I hope I showed you
something you haven't considered before when using
this card. While I would only recommend only using
this in a Reaper-based Dark Prophecy build, feel
free to experiment with this and High Priestess
together if you like. After all, this archetype has
a lot of hidden goodies waiting there for someone to
unlock and enjoy.
And, for all that is holy, keep him away from me.
I don't like scythes.
Advanced Format: 3.5/5 (Very good card. The "X
different Spellbooks" will keep this card in check
but, other than that, this card is well worthy of
its power.)
Traditional Format: 3/5 (I may be biased but any
card that summons Dark Magician Girl from the deck
with no cost deserves casual respect.)
