Monday

Welcome to a new week, albeit a short one, as we have Thursday and Friday off in observance of the 4th of July. We open this week with Evilswarm Kerkeion. We have a Level 4, Dark attributed Spellcaster Monster, with 1600 attack and 1550 defense. This Monster has a variety of tricks, but are any of them any good? If sent to the Graveyard this turn, and in the Graveyard this turn, you can Normal Summon an "lswarm" Monster for one less Tribute, so this would include Steelswarm I guess if you were playing a hybrid or the latter instead. You can banish an "lswarm" Monster from your Graveyard to add an "lswarm" Monster from your Graveyard to your Hand. Then this turn, you can Normal Summon an "lswarm" Monster from your Hand. Honestly, this card isn't awful, there are just better ways to go about doing these things.

Evilswarm Kerykeion is an important piece to the Evilswarm theme. It can single handedly special summon a rank 4 Xyz monster. With an Evilswarm Caster in the hand or grave, an Evilswarm in the hand, and two in the grave, you can even special summon Shock Master to stop those nasty Spellbooks and E-Dragons. Just summon Kerykeion and use its effect to banish an Evilswarm monster and bring Caster to your hand. Then normal summon Caster with Kerykeion’s effect and normal summon your other Evilswarm with Caster’s effect and wham! bam! thank you Ma’am! – Shock Master or Evilswarm Ouroboros. With just Kerykeion and two Evilswarm in the grave, we are summoning the all powerful Ophion to shut down meta decks or Bahamut to take our opponent’s monster.

Even though Evilswarm decks have not cracked the top tier, they are still very powerful against the meta. I have been testing a banish variant with Macro Cosmos and Dimensional Fissure with great success. Believe it or not, the banishment portion of the deck is not hindering Kerykeion. The thousand dollar decks are completely shut down when they cannot special summon level 5 or higher monsters (High Priestess and E-Dragons) and they can not build a graveyard due to your banishment cards. Evilswarm decks are not that expensive to make and can really control the field. Evilswarm Kerykeion is a key card and should be played in threes.

Today we are looking at: Evilswarm Kerykeion

“You can only use each effect of "Evilswarm Kerykeion" once per turn. While this card is in the Graveyard, if it was sent there this turn, you can Normal Summon 1 "lswarm" monster for 1 less Tribute.

● This turn: You can activate this effect; Normal Summon 1 "lswarm" monster.”

This card is one of the main ways Evilswarms are still a semi-viable deck. The one less tribute is nice, but the real meat and potatoes of his effect is in his ability to remove one Evilswarm from the grave to add another one back to your hand; and then, as the coup d’état it lets you normal summon it. This progression of effects acts as a catalytic backbone to the deck. If you play Evilswarms play this card.

There was some mistake with the review last Friday. The direct link is http://pojo.com/yu-gi-oh/CardOfTheDay/2013/Jun/28.shtml.

There are two different kinds of "lswarm" families. There are the Steelswarms and the Evilswarms. The Evilswarms are a part of the Steelswarms, so there are no cards that benefit only Evilswarms, only cards that benefit Steelswarms and cards that benefit both. Nevertheless, the Steelswarm strategy (Tribute monsters) can not bring out monsters as quickly as a dedicated Evilswarm Deck, which uses swarm strategies to Xyz Summon quickly.

Kerykeion is a fantastic help for that Xyz engine by himself. You can Normal Summon him, then use his effect to easily add another lswarm from your Graveyard to your hand. Once you do that, you can Normal Summon again, including the lswarm you JUST added. After that, boom, Rank 4 Xyz, usually into Evilswarm Ophion. Perhaps Ophion is being threatened by a large opposing monster that was somehow summoned despite Ophion preventing Level 5 or higher monsters from being Special Summoned. No problem; use Infestation Infection to return Ophion to the Extra Deck and get another Kerykeion from your Deck. Now you can use this guy to summon Evilswarm Bahamut and steal your opponent's monster!

So far I've been talking about the second of Kerykeion's two effects. What about his first? If he gets sent to the Graveyard, you get to play a Level 5 or 6 lswarm without a Tribute, a Level 7 or higher lswarm with only one Tribute, and Steelswarm Hercules with two Tributes. Problem is, there are only two Evilswarms that are over Level 4 and neither is really that powerful. There are six Steelswarms over Level 4, but problems arise because if you don't actually Tribute monsters for their Tribute Summons, they don't get their effects! The only exception is the three-Tribute Steelswarm Hercules. Also, Steelswarm Longhorn requires two Tributes but only needs one for its effect, so I suppose Kerykeion can work with Longhorn.

In short, Kerykeion's first effect rarely gives benefits, or if it does, it makes you sacrifice resources for it. The second effect is great for helping swarm with Xyzs or at least to recycle monsters.

Trad: 2.8/5 (Evilswarms might see a degree of success here, but Kerykeion's effect requires the duel to have gone on a little bit, since it needs at least two other lswarms to work)
Adv: 4/5
Aesthetics: 5/5 Together, the tribes of the Duel Terminal (Gishkis, Lavals, Gustos, Gem-Knights), with the Vylons' help, have defeated the Steelswarms that crawled out of the ground. The Vylons went mad, creating Vylon Disigma to absorb the powers of the tribes and to use it against them, but Gem-Knight Pearl was immune to its effect and was able to destroy it. The Infestation virus from the bodies of the Steelswarm monsters leaked out and began transforming incredible amounts of monsters, even the legendary Ice Barrier Dragons. Brionac became Bahamut, Gungnir became Ophion, and Trishula became Ouroboros. With so much distortion caused by the fighting, the queen of the Duel Terminal herself, Sophia, arose and threatened to reset the whole universe. In response, Constellar Rasalhague took the power of Gishki Aquamirror, turning the Evilswarm Ice Barrier Dragons into their orange orbed state. The orbs swirled around Rasalhague, giving it power and upgrading him into Evilswarm Kerykeion. Together with Constellar Sombre, they led the attack against Sophia. The staff that Kerykeion carries in its right hand is called a caduceus (which can also be called a kerykeion), a winged stick surrounded by two snakes. It is used as a symbol of commerce and is usually mixed up with the Rod of Asclepius, which is a sign for medicine (the Rod of Asclepius has only one snake and no wings).
