Comics Hero King Arthur, quite a name full, isn't
it? We have a Rank 4, Earth attributed, Warrior type
XYZ Monster, who is XYZ Summoned with two Level 4
Warrior Monsters. Seems a bit unnecessary in my
opinion for them to be Warriors, as it makes him
compete with other Noble Knight and Heroic cards,
ironically of which he gets little to no support. He
doesn't receive HERO support either since his name
includes Hero. 2400 attack isn't bad for Rank 4, but
the 1200 defense isn't great. Anyway, you can use
this guy in Noble Knights, Heroic, Six Samurai. The
problem with the first two is, good as he may be,
he's over shadowed by the theme XYZ Monsters of
those builds. Six Samurai is probably your best bet
I would think. When this card would be destroyed in
Battle, you can detach an XYZ Material to have this
card gain 500 attack, and then, if successful, your
opponent takes 500 Damage. Marginal at best, doubt
it finishes many games, but still Damage. So in
short, you take Damage from a Battle, discard a
Material, attack increases, your opponent takes
500...assuming the effect were to resolve.

Comics Hero King Arthur
EARTH/Warrior/Xyz/Effect/Rank4/2400/1200
2 Level 4 Warrior-Type monsters
If this card would be destroyed by battle, you can
detach 1 Xyz Material from this card instead. When
you do: It gains 500 ATK, and if it does, inflict
500 damage to your opponent.
Next we have Comics Hero King Arthur, a monster from
the mighty Comics Hero archetype of 2 monsters and
the other one will be reviewed tomorrow. A warrior
specific Xyz monster (like Heroic Champion
Excalibur, interestingly), with 2400 ATK solid for a
Rank 4 and 1200 DEF which is quite bad. Arthur’s
effect though is actually quite good, it has a
destruction protection/ ATK increasing/Damage
inflict effect all from 1 Xyz Material. That is good
value and while the actual effect damage isn’t
massive it could be worse.
Of course given that it has the same summoning
condition as Heroic Champion Excalibur, there are a
lot of things going for both. On Arthur’s favour its
effect isn’t a one-shot deal like Excalibur and it
can Rank Up, but there is the thing of being able to
hit someone with a 4000 ATK monster.
Overall a really good Warrior Xyz, but with so many
other great Rank 4 Warriors, it might be hard to
find room for him in your Extra Deck.

Lol, I took a look at
www.yugioh.wikia.com/card_tips:comics_hero_king_arthur
and it looks so unhelpful. I feel like tinkering
with it after I finish this article. Currently,
there are a total of twenty Rank 4 Warriors. When I
see the “2 Level 4 Warrior-Type monsters,” I
immediately think about, of course, Warrior Decks.
Although currently the top Decks are inarguably
Dragon and Spellcaster, the popular Warriors are
Battlin’ Boxer, HERO, and Six Samurai (Battlin’
Boxer Lead Yoke is pretty much the same as Arthur,
but a better effect) (btw, Comics Hero will not
qualify as a HERO). More specifically, I think of
other “2 Level 4 Warrior-Type monsters.”
Heroic Champion – Gandiva is a good card, but
nowadays the game is not that focused on Special
Summoning lower-Level monsters, so she didn’t really
get that much of a chance to ride. Blade Armour
Ninja and Heroic Champion – Excalibur will be the
ones that will give Arthur the most competition,
respectively a 2200 ATK double-attacker and an
emergency 4000 ATK. Arthur sports a higher original
ATK and is practically immune to battle. Now if you
summon Arthur, I sure as heck won’t attack him
unless I have a way to counter 3400 ATK. If I don’t
attack him, you may want to consider having him
attack a higher-ATK monster in order to purposely
activate his effect. This may prompt me to switch
all my monsters to Defence, which can be an
uncomfortable position for me.
Arthur does have issues though. The above scenario
practically describes how you have to force a
situation to activate Arthur’s effect, and that’s
kind of clumsy. Also, once you actually activate his
effect once, it’ll be hard to activate it again
unless he gets forced into Defence Position (but I
admit, as I mentioned before, he will be trouble if
I can’t play something with over 3400 ATK). Assuming
Arthur used his effect once, if I summon Maestroke
the Symphony Djinn afterwards, he should be
relatively easy to topple. The 500 damage is more
like a bonus as opposed to something that would make
me scared. Surprisingly, the part where he must use
Warrior Xyz Material doesn’t really make a
difference because I have no problems running other
monsters in non-Warrior Decks, such as Gagaga Cowboy
or Maestroke. My point is, Arthur should be used for
defensive purposes, meaning he’s a pretty good
first-turn play. However, our current Dragon/Spellcaster-infested
March 2013 format is incredibly violent and is not
kind to stall. Arthur doesn’t even have ways to
protect himself against effects like many other top
defenders can. If the September format slows down,
Arthur will be better.
When Arthur first came out, I wondered whether to
replace Utopia with him in my Dark Scorpion Deck.
Here were my musings:
Utopia negates attacks, but becomes dead weight
after doing that twice. Arthur is merely
indestructible in battle and can increase ATK, but
Utopia has more Original ATK. Arthur does a good job
at protecting himself in battle, but Utopia is a
better team player, since he can shield my frail
Scorpions and can be summoned using my non-Warrior
monsters or if I steal something with Monster Reborn
or Mind Control (especially since I’m already
running Blade Armour and Excalibur). While it’s true
Arthur is better at the surviving battles thing, but
I need Utopia for his control power, which suits the
team. So I stuck with Utopia.
Ruling Clarification: If Arthur would get destroyed
by battle, he gets 500 ATK instead, but he still
takes Battle Damage. Since Damage Calculation is
technically finished, he won’t destroy the other
monster if he has more ATK now.

Adv: 2.25/5 (a lower score than what I gave Gandiva,
but a lot of stuff changed since then, so in most
circumstances nowadays I’d rather use Arthur over
Gandiva)
Aesthetics: 3/5 Dang, this guy has a small head. The
guy who used this in the anime had a Deck revolving
around the Knights of the Round Table, kind of
similar to Noble Knight. This card, of course, is
based off of both King Arthur and medieval-styled
comics (my favourite example being
The Wizard of
Id). It also ties in to how the duelist in the
anime loved comics and was a master artist. As, as
shown by Comic Hero support cards seen only in the
anime, they may be enemies of the Evilswarms.
Philosophy Corner: Please understand that you should
not directly compare our scores on different cards
to completely determine whether or not you should
put one card or another in your Deck. The scores are
just a general estimate of how good or bad a card is
in general. Scores can be affected by different
times or even by our mood at time of the review. For
example, if you told me to review Gagaga Cowboy
right now, I’d probably give him about ~3.25/5. This
does not necessarily mean I think Cowboy is
significantly better than Arthur (since there are
many situations that Arthur is more useful than
Cowboy) but I do agree that there is a greater
amount of situations Cowboy can handle better than
Arthur.
