Beast Machine King Barbaros UR is another variant of a card we have available, so let's see if he pans out better than yesterday. This is a Level 8 Earth attribute Beast-Warrior, with 3800 attack and 1200 defense. This Monster can be Special Summoned by removing a Machine and Beast-Warrior Monster from your Hand, Field, and/or Graveyard from play. Interesting yet appropriate enough combo given the cards name. If this card attacks or is attacked, your opponent takes no Battle Damage. Kinda makes that 3800 attack a little less intimidating doesn't it? The 1200 defense is troublesome as well, as is the second effect. It opens the door for a weenie with a destruction effect to ram into this card and not take a massive amount of Damage. Still, a 3800 Special Summon isn't bad at all.

Like yesterday’s card, today’s card, Beast Machine King Barbaros Ur is a beast. In fact it is a Beast-Warrior and with 3800 in attack points, and will not be taking a back seat to many monsters. To play it, all you need is a Beast-Warrior and Machine in your grave, hand, or on the field to banish. In a deck with Beast King Barbaros, Indomitable Fighter Lei Lei, Fusilier Dragon, Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon, Grandsoil the Elemental Lord, and yesterday’s card Malefic Cyber End Dragon, we can put a real beat down on our opponent’s before they have time to make a come back. Basically using big beat stick monsters that get rather beastly when their effects are negated.

By using cards like Skill Drain, Forbidden Chalice, and Axe of Fools (which we will review tomorrow), we can negate the effects of monsters on the field to cripple our opponents while bolstering our strategy. Skill Drain hurts just about every top tier deck in the game while Forbidden Chalice can be used ether offensively to boost your monster by 400 attack and use its original attack, or negate their monster’s effects. Axe of Fools does the same thing offensively but with 1000 additional attack, giving you a 4800 attack monster.

With good news we have to have bad new as you all know. It is that Yin and Yang thingy. While having big beastly monsters on the field is great, they are not without their problems. First, they require combos which is never a good thing, as if one of the pieces is missing, the other is weekend. Second, this type of deck is very slow as you are playing one monster at a time (two with Call of the Haunted or Monster Reborn), while your opponent is flooding the field with special summons. Third, there is very little draw power outside of Pot of Duality and Trade-In or search capability. While top tier decks like Spellbooks, E-Dragons, and Mermails are plussing like crazy, all you can do is plod along and hope you can hit fast and hard. Finally, decks with strong back rows will usually disrupt your strategy and turn those powerful monsters of yours into ash.

Beast Machine King Barbaros Ür
EARTH/Beast-Warrior/Effect/Level 8/3800/1200

Next we have Beast Machine King Barbaros Ür, Yako Tenma’s super monster that wasn’t a Wicked God from Yu-Gi-Oh! R. I admit I have a soft spot for manga cards, so I am happy to review this card, even if it’s outing in R was basically; turn up, have its attack negated, get blown up. Still this card has a couple of good things, it has an alternative summoning method, and it has 3800 ATK for a level 8. What ruins this card is the poor DEF and the fact that the opponent does take any battle damage. What’s the point of having a monster with 3800 ATK if you can’t take a big chunk out of their life points? If it had its full manga effect then I could see why you would have that effect, but since it doesn’t what’s the point?

This is mainly used in Skill Drain Decks and it can be a powerful attacker, but to be honest it isn’t that important or useful in that deck even. I rarely ever summoned it or even needed to summon it since the normal Barbaros does such a good job already.

Overall a strong card, ruined by a terrible effect and the original version is just better.

Philosophical
Psycho

You know, not so long ago, I saw this card used alongside Malefic Cyber End Dragon against my Dark Scorpion Deck. After I destroyed the first MCED, my opponent banished that MCED (but I have completely no recollection of what Beast-Warrior was used) and played this with a second MCED. Needless to say, I got smashed.

Beast Machine King Barbaros Ür is a Tribute monster sporting 3800 ATK, a feat that literally is unsurpassed except by (Egyptian) gods. He is also incredibly easy to summon. Similar to Black Luster Soldier, you simply Banish two Types of monsters from your Graveyard (and in emergency situations, you can also Banish from hand and/or field). However, this card isn’t all that great, but why? Firstly, Beast Machine King can’t deal damage, so its sole purpose is to be able to run over enemy monsters. This isn’t as debilitating as much as it is annoying, more on that later. Also, Beast Machine King is very specific in its food of a Machine and Beast-Warrior; unlike Black Luster Soldier’s Light and Dark, there is not an extreme variety of choices, much less in the same Deck. This next problem is more philosophical: When was the last time you’ve actually seen Beast-Warriors used alongside Machines??

Even though recently, we’ve been getting a whole lot of Beast-Warriors, there aren’t a lot of good ones, and those that are aren’t really splashable. It’s true some Decks are splashing Fire Formation – Tenki with Brotherhood of the Fire Fist Bear and Gorilla, but that combo is out of place in Machine Decks. In Beast-Warrior Decks, they could probably splash Cyber Dragons and have some Machines in the Extra Deck, but it’s not consistent enough to warrant running Beast Machine King.

It just so happens that a Skill Drain Deck’s two most important monsters are Beast King Barbaros and Fusilier Dragon the Dual-Mode Beast, respectively a Beast-Warrior and a Machine. It’s a nice bonus that Beast Machine King is allowed to deal damage while Skill Drain is in play, but I’m more concerned that in a Deck filled with Beast-Warriors and Machines, summoning Beast Machine King becomes viable. Megamorph and Forbidden Chalice are also popular additions in this Deck, and if you use both on Beast Machine King, that’s 8000 ATK right there. However, for Machines, you have three Fusilier Dragon, Malefic Cyber End Dragon, maybe Ancient Gear Gadjiltron Dragon and maybe others. If Beast King Barbaros is the only Beast-Warrior in that Deck, I would only ever consider running a single Beast Machine King.

Niche Decks: Skill Drain

Trad: 1/5 (even if you had a Deck that was filled with Machines and Beast-Warriors, you probably wouldn’t have space for this, and even if you forced him in…what good can he do?)
Adv: 2.5/5 (he’s not that great and will often be a dead draw unless your Deck has an abnormally high amount of both Machines and Beast-Warriors…and I don’t know any Deck that does that)
Aesthetics: 5/5 This card was used in the manga against Yugi, as Fusion between Beast King Barbaros and Machine Lord Ür, and the attack name is Flashing Destructive Bullets. Of course, this version is much easier to summon, and it feels like you summon it with the spirit of any Machine and Beast-Warrior. This version has one of Machine Lord Ür’s effects, to not be able to inflict damage. The manga version, instead, had its better effect, to be able to attack multiple monsters. Either way, Beast Machine King Barbaros Ür is Beast King Barbaros equipped with Machine Lord Ür. If you didn’t know, Barbaros itself is based off Barbas, a European demon known as the “Great President of Hell.” Machines were his specialty. A lion was his true form, but he could turn himself to look more like a human. Personally, I think the original Beast King looks a lot like a chimera, while Beast Machine King does resemble a man. The dots above the U in Ür are called an umlaut, a German tone mark, and is very similar to the diaeresis aka trema. Quizzically enough, the ür is a pre-evolved form of the modern cow. …Did I seriously just say “pre-evolved form” of a real animal…?
Philosophy Corner: Due to popular demand, I am going to start occasionally writing about entire Decks in addition to individual cards. My table of contents is as follows: "Introduction," "Monster," "Spell," "Trap," "Extra Deck," "Side Deck," sometimes a "Conclusion," "Wakarimasen?", "Featured Duel," and "Further Reading." The Introduction talks about my inspiration for the Deck and how to go about with it. After that I will talk about my seventy cards (40 Main Deck, 15 Extra Deck, 15 Side Deck). The Conclusion wraps up any possible questions one may ask about the Deck. Wakarimasen is Japanese for "I Don't Understand," "I Don't Get It," etc. Here, I have a list of all my Japanese-only cards with possible replacements, plus reasons why I didn't replace them in the first place. "Featured Duel," of course, is an exhibition duel or match with that Deck and one of my friends! "Further Reading" is a list of all the sources I used, mostly pages on the www.yugioh.wikia.com that I wrote the majority of.

Hey guys today we're going to be doing Beast King Barbaros. In it's prime Beast King Barbaros was a threat to be reckoned with. Being a no-tribute 3000atk monster under Skill Drain is no joke. His effect to destroy your opponent's cards isn't typically used because of his high cost, but when it is your opponent won't be too happy with not having any cards on the board and staring down this monstrosity. Another thing is that the Gods that make rulings seem to favor him. If Beast King Barbaros' effect is ever negated his attack will return to normal! For example if summoned him it with no tributes (Making him
1900 atk) and I activate Forbidden Chalice (Negating his effect) His attack will go to 3400, then at the end of the turn Barbaros will return to 3000!
