Mecha Phantom Beast Hamstrat
- #LTGY-EN025 When this card is flipped face-up: Special Summon 2 "Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens" (Machine-Type/WIND/Level 3/ATK 0/DEF 0). This card's Level is increased by the total Levels of all "Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens" you control. While you control a Token, this card cannot be destroyed by battle or card effects. You can Tribute 1 Token, then target 1 "Mecha Phantom Beast" monster in your Graveyard; Special Summon that target. You can only use this effect of "Mecha Phantom Beast Hamstrat" once per turn.

The Mecha Phantom Beast train keeps rolling
along...or in this case the plane keeps flying I
suppose. Mecha Phantom Beast Hamstrat is a Level 3,
Wind attributed Machine, with 1100 attack, and 1600
defense, both of which are rather unremarkable in my
opinion. So this plane gains two Tokens when
flipped face-up, so he's a little on the slow end,
but obviously does credit to the Mecha Phantom Beast
Deck. This cards Level is also increased by the
number of Tokens (of its type) you control. So if
flipped (and survived) it'd be Level 5. While you
control a Token (you may have heard this before)
this card cannot be destroyed by Battle or card
effects. By tributing a Token, you can target and
Special Summon a Mecha Phantom Beast Monster from
your Graveyard. Despite being a relatively weak
Monster, and slow with the Tokens, that final
ability makes him worthwhile. But you won't need
more than one in the Deck.

We are going to talk about Mecha Phantom Beast
Hamstrat today, but first a lead in. Mecha Phantom
Beast’s are all about making Mecha Phantom Beast
Tokens and using them to protect their monsters from
destruction and in using them to make Synchro and
Xyz monsters. They are also Wind/Machine type
monsters. As we know with Mecha Phantom Beast
Dracossack, Mecha Phantom Beasts like to hide behind
their tokens and then make good use of them.
Hamtsrat is very good at making tokens and using
them to do what the archetype is designed to do
which is to Xyz or Synchro summon.
The biggest issue that I have with Mecha Phantom
Beat Hamstrat and Mecha Phantom Beasts in general is
that they are slow and need time to set up. Hamstrat
needs to be set and then flipped face up to get its
tokens. One important thing to note here is that if
it is destroyed in battle, the tokens will not save
it as they are generated after Hamstrat is already
considered destroyed. But you still get your tokens
and that is the important thing. So let’s say you
set Hamstrat first turn and it is attacked leaving
you with 2 tokens. On your next turn, you can then
summon Light and Darkness Dragon or even another
Hamstrat. With our second Hamstrat summoned, we can
use the token to special summon the first Hamstrat
from the grave and sense we still have a token on
the field, we will be able to special summon a rank
6 monster. Mechas are very good at summoning 3, 4,
6, 7, 9, and 10 ranked monsters.
Again, the biggest issue is the speed of the Mecha
Phantom Beast Decks. While they are special
summoning one monster a turn (after they are set
up), other decks like E-Dragons and Prophecy/Spellbooks
are spamming the field and replenishing their hands
on every turn. Maybe when we have a slower format,
Mecha Phantom Beast decks will stand a chance and
Hamstrat will become a viable card. Until then, I am
afraid they and Hamstrat are regulated to second
tier.

Mecha Phantom Beast Hamstrat
WIND/Machine/Effect/Level3/1100/1600
When this card is flipped face-up: Special Summon 2
"Mecha Phantom Beast Tokens"
(Machine-Type/WIND/Level 3/ATK 0/DEF 0). This card's
Level is increased by the total Levels of all "Mecha
Phantom Beast Tokens" you control. While you control
a Token, this card cannot be destroyed by battle or
card effects. You can Tribute 1 Token, then target 1
"Mecha Phantom Beast" monster in your Graveyard;
Special Summon that target. You can only use this
effect of "Mecha Phantom Beast Hamstrat" once per
turn.
A short week of COTD reviews this week, no review on
Tuesday or Wednesday. Still today we have Mecha
Phantom Beast Hamstrat. Like all Mecha Phantom
Beasts this guy loves tokens. When he is flipped he
special summons two tokens and his level increases
by the number of tokens and like all Mecha Phantom
Beasts he can’t be destroyed while there are tokens
on the field. His main effect like all Mecha Phantom
Beasts involves tributing a token, then he can
special summon any Mecha Phantom Beast from your
Graveyard.
Again a lot of solid effects, and his main effect is
ridiculously powerful, just give up 1 token for any
Mecha Phantom Beast you want. His only problem is
his poor stats, compounded with the fact he has to
be flipped in order to get his token summoning
ability, so chances are he isn’t going to survive
being attacked face down.
Overall, another great addition to the Mecha Phantom
Beast archetype, just don’t get too attached to him
if he’s face down.
