Today's Card of the Day Review is Gauntlet
Launcher, an underrated Ultra/Ultimate Rare from the
Lord of the Tachyon Galaxy booster set. In fact, I
would give an proper argument that it is the most
underrated card in the set. It has a lot of promise
and is basically a Rank 6 Xyz staple for any decks
that can run it.
Its effect is short but powerful. Here you go:
"You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then
target 1 monster your opponent controls; destroy it.
This guy here even comes with a solid 2400 ATK
and a strong 2800 DEF, which is capable of holding
back the attack of ANY Dragon Ruler while in Defense
Position, including Blaster at 2800 ATK. Even
Crimson Blader can't run it over without help.
So it comes with very respectable stats.
However, despite the strength of its stats, it
means nothing without an effect worth fearing and it
surely has one worth noticing.
In short, you can detach an Xyz Material and blow
up a monster. Pretty standard, right? However, there
is something that is missing from this card that
normally appears on almost every monster card in the
game (or almost any card for that matter). That is
an "Once per turn" addition. This card doesn't have
one.
This means that you can drop this and use up an
Xyz Material one after another and blow up as many
monsters as you have Xyz Material. You can add more
Xyz Material via card effects like Overlay Regen and
then convert it into another missile on an
opponent's monster. Best part is you can blow up
everything in one turn and then swing for 2400
damage or place it in Defense and make your opponent
answer it before dropping another monster that can't
deal with it otherwise it will be picked up with
relative ease. Even better, since this is a Rank 6
monster, you can also Chaos Xyz Change into Gaia
Dragon, the Thunder Charger if you ever need the
piercing damage or the small ATK boost to 2600.
Needless to say, this card got a very small
amount of text and yet it does so much in the game.
It is worth picking 1-2 up and putting it aside just
in case. To be honest, it can't get any cheaper than
it is right now.
Traditional Format: 2/5 (It can work there but
I'm sure it is too slow.)
Advanced Format: 4/5 (It forces your opponent to
waste Effect Veilers to stop the effect or having to
make sub-optimal plays to work around it, both which
works nicely to your advantage. The 2800 DEF makes a
huge difference for this card as it can play the
grind game with your opponent if need to be while
standing as a wall. It's quite impressive for what
it does and I dare say it is worth the Ultra Rare
rarity it got.)
