Today's COTD Review is another card from the Lord
of the Tachyon Galaxy booster set: Duck Fighter.
This OCG import is a Level 3 WIND Machine-type
monster with a subpar 1300 ATK and 1400 DEF and it
was made for decks that can abuse the use of Level 3
or higher Tokens, like the Mecha Phantom Beast
archetype that was introduced in this set.
Here is the quick rundown of its effect:
"If this card is in your hand or Graveyard: You can
Tribute Tokens whose total Levels equal 3 or more;
Special Summon this card. You can only use the
effect of "Duck Fighter" once per turn."
Pretty simple, really. You basically trade in a
Level 3 or higher token and you get a Level 3
monster with some ATK in exchange. If you was in a
position to declare direct attacks that turn,
trading a 0 ATK Mecha Phantom Beast Token for a 1300
ATK Duck Fighter sounds pretty good. It also works
from both hand and Graveyard and you can discard it
as a cost for other cards like Raigeki Break and
then bring it back on the field afterwards for some
small card advantage. Since it is a WIND monster,
this can be Tributed to the Graveyard for some WIND
support cards like Spiritual Wind Art - Miyabi for
example.
Lastly, it can help in bringing out a World
Premiere card that was also released in this set,
Totem Bird, whose is basically a Evolzar Laggia for
Spells and Traps and needs 2 Level 3 WIND monsters,
in which Duck Fighter will qualify.
There isn't a lot to cover for this card. It
helps makes easy Xyz Summons by trading Tokens
(which can't be used for Xyz Material) for Duck
Fighter, which can be used. It can also gives you
some ATK to apply more pressure to the opponent and
it can make controlling the number of Mecha Phantom
Beast Tokens on the field even easier to control if
you feel like you need additional help. Lastly, it
is searchable via Gear Gigant X, which is a nifty
little boon for the card.
Overall, it is a decent card that can actually
see some play as a tech card. If you do play Mecha
Phantom Beasts, it doesn't hurt to pick a copy up in
case. It may actually come in handy.
Traditional Format: 1/5 (It just doesn't belong
there.)
Advanced Format: 2/5 (I'm sure Mecha Phantom Beasts
don't need this in the long run but on the off
chance that they want to make use of Totem Bird or
they can use additional Token control, Duck Fighter
will make that task a little bit easier for them.)
