Monday
In honor of the return of Philosophical Psycho,
welcome to (another) Number week, reviewing more of
the Number XYZ Monsters. Opening this week is
Number 22: Zombiestein. This is a Rank 8, Dark
attributed, Zombie Monster, who is XYZ Summoned with
two Dark Level 8 Monsters, with a gargantuan 4500
attack but a meek 1000 defense. Zombiestein has
some very excellent things going for him. Being
Dark and Zombie are very well supported things.
Now, once a turn, during either players turn, you
can detach an XYZ Material from this card, plus send
a card from your Hand to the Graveyard (another plus
for Zombies) to target a face-up card your opponent
controls, then shifting this card to Defense
position. If you do, the selected cards effect is
negated until the End Phase. That's some nice
versatility, as long as the card is face-up,
Zombiestein car target it. However, the 1000
defense could be a big problem very fast, since he
has to change to defense. Plus, he can't be Special
Summoned outside of XYZ Summoning. 4500 attack will
stand up to about everything, but 1000 defense
stands up to about nothing.
Ratings:
3.5/5 both Formats, he could be as good or even
better in Traditional simply because you can use
DMoC in that Format

We are going to be reviewing Xyz monsters this
week to see if they can contend for space in our
Extra deck. First up on the list is Number 22:
Zombiestein, a 4500 attack beast, I mean Zombie that
has the quick effect ability to negate one of your
opponent’s face-up cards. Any time you have a
monster with 4500 attack, you have to take that
monster seriously. The second effect of Zombiestein
could come in handy in the right situation,
especially if you have Final Attack Orders on the
field, but it is the attack that makes this card
extra deck worthy. All you need is two level 8 Dark
monsters on the field to summon it.
Obviously, any Dark deck that can summon level 8
monsters can play Zombiestein. The best deck that is
also very completive that can run Zombiestein is
Dark World. Getting two Grapha’s on the field is not
that hard with all of the draw and search power that
the deck has and the ease of summoning Grapha from
the grave. The next deck that I really like with
Zombiestein is Hieratic’s with Tri-Horned Dragon and
Red-Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon. You can play it in
dark decks that are not so main stream like The Dark
Creator with Dark Nephthys, Demise, King of
Armageddon, and Gagaga decks as well. There is also
a nifty little card called Darklon. It is a level 1
Dark monster that increases all of your monsters by
1 level and make them Dark monsters. Elemental
Dragons can summon two level 7 monsters with ease,
so by summoning Darkon you can change them to level
8 Dark monsters and summon Zombiestein easily.
The question that we have to ask ourselves is: Is
Number 22: Zombiestein good enough to take the place
of other rank 8 Xyz monsters that already occupy a
space in our extra deck? Zombiestein would be hard
pressed to beat out Hieratic Sun Dragon Overlord of
Heliopolis and its ability to destroy all of your
opponent’s cards and still attack with 3000 attack.
Number 107:Galaxy-Eyes Tachyon Dragon with 3000 in
attack and the ability to attack twice and card
negation effect will give Zombiestein a run for its
money as well. In the right situation, Zombiestein
can win the game for you by running over your
opponent’s monster if it delivers enough damage to
win the game.
If you are running a deck that is built for running
rank 8 Dark monsters and have the Extra Deck space,
I would recommend running Number 22: Zombiestein.

Today we are talking about a new Zombie Xyz
monster that can fit into a bunch of different
decks. It’s a manga promo card but it’s a
another number monster that you might want to get.
Number 22: Zombiestein
Attribute: Dark
Types: Zombie/Xyz/Effect
Rank 8
2 Level 8 DARK monsters
Must be Xyz Summoned and cannot be Special Summoned
by other ways. Once per turn, during either player's
turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card
and send 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard to
target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; change
this card to Defense Position, and if you do, negate
that face-up card's effect until the End Phase.
ATK/4500
DEF/1000
This monster is a great rank 8 monster because of
its amazing attack power and decent effect.
It’s a 4500 attack beater! You don’t see too
many of those. Zombiestein’s effect isn’t too
bad either. It allows you to detach one Xyz
material and send 1 card from your hand to the grave
to target any face-up card on your opponent’s side
of the field and negate its effects until the end
phase. It does go into defense position if you
use its effect but that isn’t too bad. Its
defense is terrible so I would probably use him
mostly as a big beater. Its effect just seems like a
bonus that you can use if you need to.
It’s also very easy to summon when used in the right
deck. The best deck you can use this card in
is Dark World decks. It just takes 2 Graphas
to make so it should definitely be considered a
staple in a Dark World extra deck. Another
deck that can make this monster easily are Gimmick
Puppet decks. It is an archetype that is
designed to make rank 8 monsters so this monster is
perfect for that deck.

Today's Card of the Day Review is Number 22:
Zombiestein, the most recent promo to be released.
This DARK Zombie-type card needs the aid of 2 Level
8 DARK monsters but it comes packing with a massive
4500 ATK and 1000 DEF.
Here's the effect:
"Must be Xyz Summoned and cannot be Special Summoned
by other way. Once per turn, during either player's
turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card
and send 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard to
target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; change
this card to Defense Position, and if you do, negate
that face-up card's effect until the End Phase."
While I'm sure you are looking at this card's
summoning requirements and think that it is
difficult to pull off but there is at least 3 decks
that can actually summon it. One of them is Dark
World, which is done with 2 Grapha, Dragon Lord of
Dark World. The 2nd deck is Gagaga since Gagaga
Magician, Gagaga Girl, and Gagaga Child is all DARK
monsters that can easily change their level with
ease and the last deck is Gimmick Puppet, in which
deck will receive a good portion of its support in
the upcoming Number Hunters set. That deck
specializes in summoning Level 8 DARK monsters which
makes Number 22 easy to bring out.
Once you do that, you get a monster with a massive
4500 ATK, whose strength matches that of the ironic
Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon. Needless to say, almost
nothing can beat it in battle properly with all of
that strength backing it up and it can easily finish
off duels in a couple quick blows.
To make things worse, it comes with its own special
ability that can add even more protection but it has
a massive drawback. Basically, you can negate an
card effect on the field by simply giving up 3
things: an Xyz Material, 1 card from your hand, and
you switch Number 22 to Defense Position. The
biggest issue is that this card goes to Defense
Position and makes it a lot more vulnerable to
attacks with only 1000 DEF. It also costs a card
from your hand as well. However, this card also
negate any card your opponent controls including
Spells and Traps.
Provided you can protect Number 22 after you use the
effect, its ability can actually help you deal with
card effects that would otherwise own this card. For
example, your opponent could Xyz Summon Number 11:
Big Eye and try to take control of it. Number 22's
effect can negate it and switch to DEF and, since
Number 11 can't attack during the turn it has used
its effect, Number 22 will most likely survive the
round and bound Number 11 to dust. Also, you can use
its effect offensively. Another example is if your
opponent has a Messenger of Peace that keeps Number
22 from attacking, you can use its effect to negate
it, let Number 22 go into Defense Position, and then
manually switch it back to Attack Position and
attack with it.
It has utility as well as a massive number of ATK
that can take down anything that opposes it. While
it has use to only a few decks due to its summoning
restrictions, it is indeed a big boost for the decks
that can indeed use it.
Traditional Format: 2/5 (Sure, 4500 ATK is massive
but the restrictions hurts it badly. It may serve a
niche purpose there though.)
Advanced Format: 3/5 (Outside of getting it on the
field, it does a lot. It owns monsters in battle, it
has a costly but niche effect that adds some utility
whenever needed when combined makes a pretty
powerful overall monster. It is worth grabbing for
any deck that can bring it out as I do consider it a
staple for those 3 decks. There may be more that can
use it in the near future.)

Number 22: Zombiestein
DARK/Zombie/Xyz/Effect/Rank8/4500/1000
2 Level 8 DARK monsters
Must be Xyz Summoned and cannot be Special Summoned
by other ways. Once per turn, during either player's
turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card
and send 1 card from your hand to the Graveyard to
target 1 face-up card your opponent controls; change
this card to Defense Position, and if you do, negate
that face-up card's effect until the End Phase.
It's Numbers week here at Pojo, which all week we
will be looking a a variety of Number monsters even
some from the Upcoming Numbers Hunters pack. First
up though is a ZeXal Manga promo, Number 22:
Zombiestein. The first thing that most people will
notice is its stats, a whooping 4500 ATk and a
terrible 1000 DEF. So before we even look at this
card's effect, it has a major flaw. But what about
its effect?
Well it can negate the effect of one face up card
your opponent controls (a veeeeerrrrrrryyyy common
effect with anime and manga Xyz monsters these days)
until the end phase. All it requires is for you to
detach a material and send 1 card from your hand,
and switch this into DEF mode. So you lose material,
a card from your hand and you are stuck with a 1000
DEF monster. This is an effect that isn't worth it,
even if it is a quick effect, not only that but it
doesn't destroy the card, so the problem will remain
but this monster will probably be killed before
then. Also once it's gone, you can special summon it
back to the field and it doesn't have generic
materials either.
Overall a terrible card, with its 4500 ATK is the
only thing going for it.

Here is a Number that hasn't come out yet in the
anime. Yuma only got this in the manga. How can we
even play this guy anyway? Its the Number monster
with the highest ATK, and true to most Zombies, has
very good ATK for very low DEF (frankly, its DEF
isn't that bad compared to other Zombies and it has
the highest ATK of all Zombies). There's another
restriction: Its Xyz Materials are two Dark Level
8's. It means Zombiestein is less splashable, but it
means Dark Decks have a unique tool for themselves,
and Dark Decks indeed can swarm Level 8 pretty
easily.
First, I shall go over what sort of decks that can
actually play this. I am rather fond of the Zombie
playing style. It is a great disappointment for
Frankenstein here that the two of the most effective
Zombie support cards, Book of Life (basically
Monster Reborn for Zombies) and Call of the Mummy
(Special Summon any Zombie from the hand with very
bare restrictions). However, using those cards, it
is very easy to summon Despair from the Dark, and a
pair of them can easily play Zombiestein. The only
noteworthy Zombie support cards that can actually be
used with Zombiestein are Pain Painter, Pyramid of
Wonders, and Tutan Mask. Certain types of Dragon
Decks use a lot of Level 8 Dark monsters that can be
summoned just as easily as Zombies can, examples
being Dark Horus, Darkstorm Dragon, Light and
Darkness Dragon, Malefic Stardust Dragon, Red Dragon
Archfiend, and (if you're up for it) Clear Vice
Dragon. Certain Fairy Decks can do it too. Xyz Turbo
Decks usually focus on Gadgets, Summoner Monk, or
Goblindbergh to help them create Rank 4 Xyzs, but it
is also possible to throw in a pair of Gagaga
Magician and Gagaga Girl (or, of course, use a
dedicated Gagaga Deck). (As an added bonus,
Zombiestein will give Chronomaly Atlandis the best
equip.) In a given situation, Zombiestein is usually
the best Xyz Monster Magician and Girl can create
together.
The Deck that can truly abuse the power of
Zombiestein, however, is Dark World. Grapha is so
annoying! Its a 2700 ATK monster that lets you blow
up something when you discard it and it has its OWN
reusable easy-to-use effect to revive itself! That
by itself is powerful, but, yes, Grapha is a Level 8
Dark monster, and the rate at which it revives
itself faster than a Treeborn Frog makes it a prime
candidate for Synchro and Xyz Material. You see what
I'm gettin' here?
I'm sure many of the people above me will praise
Zombiestein's ATK, but deride how vulnerable it gets
when it shifts to its weak DEF to activate its
negation effect. At least Zombiestein only goes into
Defence Position and doesn't get destroyed...right
away (I do suppose another downside is that it can't
help against self-tributing cards such as Stardust
Dragon or Infernity Launcher). It's a brilliant
design, how a powerful effect such as negation
forces Zombiestein into its weaker state, ensuring
it can be normally be only used only once per turn.
You cannot deny, however, that 4500 ATK is still
almost impossible to defeat by battle. That's when
you need to resort to Dark Hole or some other
effect, but nope, Zombiestein will negate that! In
this sense, it's like Zombiestein has a second life,
and if he gets protected after using his effect,
he'll go right into Attack Position the following
turn. You'll try to use Bottomless Trap Hole or Dark
Hole? Ha, he'll negate those too! And of course, he
doesn't even have to negate something that directly
threatens him. Wattcobra threatening to attack for
game? Lol, nope. Montage Dragon with over 8000 ATK?
Drop you to 0, permanently. Monster Reborn or a
potentially disruptive Royal Decree? No, no, no, not
in my house!
There are not a whole many decks that run Level 8
Dark monsters, but those who do can play them
easily, and in those Decks it is worth using this
monster.
Niche Decks: Zombie, Dragon, Xyz Turbo (Gagaga),
Gimmick Puppet, especially Dark World, sometimes
Infernity and Synchro Turbo, you can try DNA
Transplant but it seems too much trouble for its
worth
Trad: 2/5 (the power to negate stuff during your
opponent's turn is tremendous, although I question
whether he's really worth the trouble to
summon..Zombies and Dark World would probably work,
and if you really wanted to I suppose Dark Magician
of Chaos and Chaos Emperor Dragon can be used)
Adv: 4.15/5 (one more thing, I almost forgot that
there's a discard cost to Zombiestein as well, which
is troublesome but workable, but a redeeming quality
is that Zombiestein can be activated at will and is
not required to chain to the card it wishes to
negate)
Aesthetics: 4/5 It should be pretty obvious this
monster is based off of Frankenstein's Creature from
Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein (1818). As you
likely know, Dr. Victor Frankenstein created
Creature by combining parts of dead bodies, and the
result was someone that was extremely physically fit
but was so ugly that people always instantly thought
he was evil. Because he was exposed to so much hate,
Creature developed into a hateful kind of person,
and hate + big muscles = trouble. What you probably
don't know is that Frankenstein's Creature was also
a vegetarian and that he came back to Dr.
Frankenstein to ask him to make him a wife, so that
he could have someone that could be with him without
judging. This is referenced when Zombiestein is
summoned (in the manga). Yuma summons Gagaga Girl
and Zombiestein refuses to attack out of love.
Gagaga Girl then uses her cellphone to take a
picture to show him how ugly he is. Zombiestein then
gets jealous after Yuma summons Gagaga Magician.
Anyway, for the actual Number itself, twenty-two is
pronounced ni juu ni (二十二, which translates
literally into two ten two). I think the most likely
basis for assigning this number is that "double two"
would be pronounced ふ二 (fu ni). The card creators
probably thought it sounded like 腐肉 (fu niku), so
they took the idea of "rotting meat" and went with
it. Assuming that's true, it's a bit of a stretch,
but I like the development.
Riddle: It begins eternity and ends space and time.
It dwells in the middle of every plus sea and
finishes every rhyme. What can it be? Answer on
Friday.
