Today's Card of the Day Review is Kuriphoton, an
Ultra Rare card from the Zexal Collection Tin.
This card happens to be another expansion of the
Kuriboh series of monsters, spotting a 300 ATK and
200 DEF body. It is a Fiend, just like Kuriboh, but
instead of being a DARK Attribute, it's LIGHT
instead.
As you may be wondering what makes this card
worthy of being a Ultra Rare, its effect is pretty
interesting. Take a look.
"During either player's turn: You can send this
card from your hand to the Graveyard and pay 2000
Life Points; you take no damage this turn. If this
card is in your Graveyard: You can send 1 "Photon"
monster from your hand to the Graveyard, except
"Kuriphoton"; add this card from your Graveyard to
your hand. You can only use this effect of
"Kuriphoton" once per turn."
This card is perhaps the best of all of the
Kuriboh-based monsters because its effect allows you
to avoid ALL damage heading your way.
Effect Damage? Negated.
Battle Damage? Negated.
However, for such powerful protection, it has a
cost and a high one too: 2000 of your Life Points.
That is one quarter of your original amount of Life
Points.
Now, while that does sound like a ungodly amount
of damage to take, keep in mind that this can save
you from an possible OTK from your opponent. If you
are about to take 5000-8000 points of Life Point
damage from an opponent, sending this along with
2000 LP to stay in the game sounds like quite the
bargain. Not to mention you have a chance to counter
that massive field they have dropped in front of you
and change the momentum of the match.
This card also has extra value in a Hope for
Escape-based Exodia deck. Since you do have to pay
2000 LP to use this, this will allow you to draw an
additional card off of an Hope for Escape
activation, depending if you are already below your
opponent in Life Points before you activated this
which, in most cases, you should be.
To continue on with this, this card can be
retrieved by sending a Photon monster from your hand
to the Graveyard so if you need a quick way to dump
a Galaxy-Eyes Photon Dragon to the Graveyard or you
need Kuriphoton's abilities again, you certainly
have access to it.
Lastly, this does count as a Photon monster so
you can search it out with Photon Lizard, get it
back from the Graveyard via Orbital 7, or Special
Summon it directly from your Deck via the Spell Card
Accellight.
In conclusion, this card is an interesting little
weapon made to stop OTKs, give an extra weapon for
alternate win decks like Final Countdown and Exodia,
all while giving Photon/Galaxy decks an nifty tech
card that works with Photon support.
Not bad. Not bad at all.
Traditional Format: 2/5 (It has value in that
format. Something to keep in mind.)
Advanced Format: 3/5 (I like it as a 1-of tech but
I'm sure it is not needed. If you do have to worry
yourselves concerning OTKs in this format, maining 1
and siding 1 is certainly not a bad idea.)
