Here we are. #2 on the Top 10 List and we are
covering a money card from this set, Mecha Phantom
Beast Dracossack.
This generic Rank 7 WIND Machine with 2600 ATK
and 2200 DEF has a few effects that makes it
noteworthy of its Secret Rare status. Here they are.
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from
this card; Special Summon 2 "Mecha Phantom Beast
Tokens" (Machine-Type/WIND/Level 3/ATK 0/DEF 0).
While you control a Token, this card cannot be
destroyed by battle or card effects. Once per turn:
You can Tribute 1 "Mecha Phantom Beast" monster,
then target 1 card on the field; destroy that
target. This card cannot attack during the turn you
activate this effect.
Well, while this card doesn't look like much on
the surface, it does do quite a bit once you put
things in perspective. First of all, its Xyz
Materials is strictly for spawning Tokens on the
field. Please take note that they are indeed Level 3
and you get 2 of them per each Xyz Material usage.
Why is that important? Well, the tokens can be used
for a variety of things. One of them is using them
as Synchro Materials and you got 6 Levels of Synchro
Materials available for you for basically free. Drop
an Effect Veiler and tune it with 2 of those Tokens
and you can make Ancient Sacred Wyvern or Black Rose
Dragon. Tune a Level 1 Tuner with one Token and you
can make Armory Arm.
Another usage is using it as Tribute material. If
you run Light and Darkness Dragon, you can tribute 2
of those tokens and drop that on the field. Caius
can be dropped with just 1. Vanity's Fiend only need
1 Token. It basically brings out free Tribute
Material ready to be abused. It makes certainly
cards look pitifully easy to drop.
And to think that is just Dracossack's first
effect.
The 2nd effect is basically a standard effect for
Mecha Phantom Beasts. Basically having one Token on
the field, Dracossack can't be destroyed so if you
expect to get rid of it quickly, it's not happening
unless you kill the decoys first.
The 3rd effect is more troubling than some people
give it credit for. By Tributing a Mecha Phantom
Beast monster, you basically get a Gagagabolt for
free. Target a card and blow it up. Unfortunately,
you lose the chance to attack as a result however,
since Dracossack will mostly likely be there next
turn, it is basically a free card destroying
machine. It doesn't even need to attack. Now, the
reason why I mention that this card is more
troubling is because Dracossack can just Tribute
itself to blow up a card. You don't need a Token to
fire the cannons. You can just Tribute itself.
Lastly, if you start your turn with a Dracossack
on the field with an Xyz Material attached to it,
you can activate Dracossack's Token summoning
effect, use Dracossack's effect and Tribute itself
to destroy a card, and then use the 2 Tokens to
bring out LADD. That is just utterly brutal.
And to think this is what it brings for any decks
that can make this for Dragon Rulers, Machina,
Mermails, Prophecy, and other decks. We hasn't
talked about Mecha Phantom Beasts and what
Dracossack brings for them. In that deck, Dracossack
is truly the deck's boss monster due to it being
almost impossible to get rid of since Megaraptor
will give it more Tokens than it can Tribute,
Dracossack can keep popping for days, and since the
deck normally run a decent backrow, Dracossack only
becomes harder to get deal with. To make things
worse, Hamstrat can bring Dracossack on the field
and then Tribute itself off to blow something up or
bring Dracossack back as a solid 2600 ATK monster.
Since the deck can make its own Tokens via
Tetherwolf, Megaraptor, and Aerial Recharge, you
don't really need Dracossack to provide the ammo.
Just get it back on the field so it can keep
shooting.
It deals with any problem cards on the field,
it's generic, it has a solid attack, and it brings a
lot of flexibility for any deck that can make it.
The only thing I wish was for Konami to show some
mercy to Mecha Phantom Beast players by making it an
Ultra so the card won't be $150+ but I guess it
can't be helped.
Overall, this is a very good card. Not broken but
since the deck to beat basically runs at least 2
Dracossack, if not 3, the price tag does come with
the territory.
Traditional Format: 2/5 (Unfortunately, it is way
too slow there.)
Advanced Format: 4/5 (It is VERY good here. It
brings out free Synchro and Tribute Material on the
field, blows stuff up, and can slow your opponent
down all at once. It is actually a bit scary what it
can do for a player who thinks outside of the box.)
