Friday

Closing the week is a Synchro Monster, in X-Saber Souza.  :Level 7, Earth, Warrior, 2500 attack and 1800 defense.  Synchro Summoned with a Tuner and one or more X-Saber Monsters.  So this guy is Deck specific.  During your Main Phase, by tributing an X-Saber Monster to choose one of two effects until the End Phase.  Either this card destroy a Monster it Battles with, or this card is immune to Trap effects.  Both are reasonably helpful effects, allowing it to destroy something annoying and hopefully more powerful, although it would destroy itself in the first situation.  The Trap effect is probably less helpful I suppose, since it only lasts for the turn.  He isn't bad for the Deck though.

X-Saber Souza
EARTH/Warrior/Synchro/Effect/Level 7/2500/1600

To wrap up this week we have X-Saber Souza, an X-Saber Synchro Monster. Statwise ti is a non-generic Synchro monster, which is an EARTH/Warrior, which is standard for most warriors with 2500 ATk, meh for a level 7 and 1600 DEF which is bad for a level 7.

Effectwise things don’t get better. During your main phase and until the End Phase, you have to tribute 1 "X-Saber" monster to either automatically destroy a monster it battles or protect it from trap destruction. While both effects are decent, neither are worth giving up a monster, especially for 1 turn and it isn’t a quick effect.

Overall, it might have been playable if it didn’t have the tribute monster cost. But it does so it isn’t worth it.

It's finally Friday folks!  We conclude the week with another JUMP card, and a slightly older one tat that, X-Saber Souza.

This guy is an okay addition to the X-Saber deck, but nothing amazing.  His effect lets you tribute a fellow X-Saber to allow him to either destroy a monster by effect rather than damage calculation, or you can make him immune to being destroyed by Traps for the rest of the turn.  Mind you, that's only DESTROYED, so he can still be compulsed, D-Prison'd, whatever.

It's also important in this case to look at his level.  Black Rose is a level 7 as well, and has a much more powerful effect than Souza.  Furthermore, many X-Saber players attempt to go for level 6 monsters, to use the destruction effect of XX-Saber Hyunlei. Being able to make level 6 monsters also allows the player to make Naturia Barkion, and comboed of course with Naturia Beast, you create the famous lockdown.

Souza, sadly, just isn't that great of a monster.  He's overshadowed by his more useful Synchro brethren, and his effects typically are not worth giving up one of your Sabers for.  I really wouldn't consider running him.

Thanks for reading and have a great weekend!

X-Saber Souza
This is a really odd COTD choice.  It was a pretty good card several years ago but time has diminished the importance and relevance of both Synchro monsters overall and the X-Saber archetype.

It has two effects.  It immediately kills a monster in battle and it's protected from traps.  The former has limited use since it's a bigger costlier monster that should slaughter what's in its path anyway.  The latter is quite useful but for either effect you need to a tribute monster.  I know you can trigger Darksoul effect but didn't you just offer two monsters to summon this guy?

A dedicated X-Saber deck should MAYBE pack 1 in the Extra Deck anyway for some situations, even if he isn't nearly as good as the uber-powerful hand-control monster Gottoms or the backrow-hater Hyunlei.

Terrorking Oh, this card takes me back... to a very dark place. Have you ever had your hand emptied and then prohibited from playing your spells by Cold Wave? You've not become a man until you experience this. Do not worry though, my guppies, I shall walk you down this confusing path to manhood. Believe in me, and that I will guide you. In Duel Terminal lore, our friend here, Souza was once leader of the X-Sabers, and was one that only cared about victory, so he was kind of a jerk. During one battle he mysteriously vanished. Let's see if his effect is befitting of one that cared so much of victory.

His summoning requirements should be easily-met in an X-Saber deck, so that's not a point of discussion here. X-Sabers certainly have no problems getting a bunch of monsters on the field at the same time, so activating his effect by tributing an X-Saber is equally laughable. Now let's look at what his effects actually do.

1. You can have him destroy any monster he battles, essentially before he battles them, which is a good way of handling threats with more power than him, or those pesky "cannot be destroyed by battle" cards.

2. You can make him immune to destructive traps.

He's not some gamebreaker by any means, but he's not particularly awful either. If you're using X-Sabers, you should run at least 1 of this guy just for the situations he comes handy in.

X-Saber Souza is a rather lackluster card.  The second effect is usually pretty useless.  Typically the only card it will protect Souza from is Mirror Force.  The first effect is basically a Catastor-like effect, which can be good in the right situation.  The problem is it is way too costly to pull off.  You have to commit 3 monsters to the play (two to summon Souza and a third to tribute), and then your opponent has to have no traps to stop the summon of Souza or Souza's attack.  Most situations where Souza would be useful, you'd be better off summoning Black Rose Dragon or Moonlight Rose Dragon (once it is released in the TCG).

Rating: 1/5 (Terrible)
