Hello Pojo Fans,

Sylvan monsters are back in the CoTD, and today it's Sylvan Marshalleaf. A Water, Plant monster, this little guy is a level 3 with 1500ATK/1200DEF. “When this card is Normal Summoned: You can choose either 1 or 2, then excavate that many cards from the top of your Deck, send any excavated Plant-Type monsters to the Graveyard, also place the other cards on the bottom of your Deck in any order. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: You can target 1 monster on the field; destroy that target.”

Decent stats for a level three, Marshallleaf can be searched by Lonefire Blossom, Violet Witch, Mount Sylvania, and Sylvan Flowerknight. You will choose two almost all of the time, then excavate that many cards off the top of your deck. Any Plant-type monsters get sent to the grave, while any other cards go to the bottom of your deck in any order. Any Sylvan monster excavated will get its effect, which will give you a plus. If Marshalleaf itself is excavated and sent to the Graveyard you can target a monster and destroy it. Dandylion, Naturia Pineapple, and Spore are targets that will benefit from Sylvan Marshalleaf's effect. Dandylion will give you two tokins, while Spore will be locked-and-loaded in the Graveyard for that turn, or whenever you feel it's right to use it.

Marshalleaf won't be attacking many monsters and winning. The Sylvan monsters are several different attributes, and Marshalleaf is a Water monster. Though there is support, it would aid the archtype if they were all or reasonably close to the same attribute. Marshalleaf only gets its effect when it is Normal Summoned. If Marshalleaf got its effect whenever it was summoned, it would be played in three in a Sylvan deck. As is, I'm not sure you play three, but two for sure.

Sylvan Marshalleaf

Okay, first thought. They totally copied the character Makar from Zelda: The Wind Waker. And for those who still don't know, the term “excavate” means to reveal cards from the top of the deck via an effect.

For a Sylvan deck, the only context in which this card could be truly judged, this is a very good card, one which you would want to run 2 or 3 of. On summon, you instantly trigger the excavation effect, making it very reliable. You don't have to do X, Y and Z in order to fuel the archetype's engine. You get it immediately.

In Traditional, “destroy 1 monster” isn't as impressive and Sylvans are just too slow for that format, but in Advanced, the removal effect is great, especially when you get it for free, as you do by excavating this card. It's even optional so you don't destroy your own monster.

What's not to like here?

Terrorking

Ah, my silly guppies, you probably thought this was Shinto week, right? Well this card should put an end to that theory. Today, we look at another Sylvan: Sylvan Marshalleaf.

Hello and welcome, my dearies, to Terrorking's review of the aforementioned card. It's good. It let's you excavate TWO cards and when it's excavated, you can destroy a monster on the field. Furthermore, he has excellent synergy with cards like Spore due to being level 3 (one of the easiest levels to manipulate when Synchro summoning). You want to be using three of this guy if you're using Sylvans.

Traditional: 1.5/5
Advanced: 3/5
