Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Day
Daily Since 2002!

Sylvan Hermitree
- #LVAL-EN020

Once per turn: You can excavate the top card of your Deck, and if it is a Plant-Type monster, send it to the Graveyard, and if you do, draw 1 card. Otherwise, place it on the bottom of your Deck. If this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect: Look at up to 3 cards from the top of your Deck, then place them on the top of the Deck in any order.

Sylvan Hermitree is the newest card of the week, opening a new Archtype up, and featuring prominently the term Excavating...for the record, to excavate, in the simplest and plainest of terms, means to pick up.  Now, excavating is just that, except this is Yugioh, so it's not JUST that.  It does let you pick up a card (or cards) and reveal it (or them) to you and your opponent.  They are NOT Drawn cards, and return back to the Deck exactly as they were.  Unless of course the card instructs otherwise, or an effect happens, and so on.  As for this card, it's Level 8, Fire attributed (which makes no sense as Fire burns Plants in my experience) with 2700 attack (not bad) and 1800 defense (also not awful).  Now, this guy does some good things.  Once a turn, you can excavate the top card of your Deck, and send it to the Graveyard, to Draw one card...so long as said card was a Plant.  That adds speed and gives you Plants in the Graveyard to use for other things...Plants like that.  If not, the card is placed on the bottom of your Deck.  Furthermore, if this card is excavated from the Deck and sent to the Graveyard by a card effect, look at up to three cards from the top of your Deck and return them in the order your please.  Honestly, as trigger dependent as that is, the Deck can make it work, as can other things.  It may not seem like a big deal, but it could end up being one.  Hard to judge this card, and this Deck, I don't see it being Tier 1, but it should be fun for a while.  We'll see too what (if anything) the next Ban has to say about this Archtype.

We get more support for Noble Knights in today’s card, Noble Knight Peredur. What Peredur gives you is another Knight that becomes a level 5 Dark monster. The other two are Noble Knight Madraut and Borz. This is important for the summoning of Artorigus King of the Noble Knight and sacred Noble Knight of King Artorigus. It is also important for the special summoning of Lady of the Lake from the graveyard to Synchro summon Ignoble Knight of High Laungsallyn.

The effect of Noble Knight Peredur is quite nice as well. With 1900 in attack, Peredur can hold its own with any level 4 monster. When you boost its attack with Noble Arms Gallatin, you have a strong 2900 in attack. If your opponent sends Peredur to the grave or you Synchro summon with it, you get one of your Noble Arms cards back from the graveyard.

Noble Knight Peredur does what the Noble theme is geared to do and that is offset the disadvantage that comes with playing equip cards. That disadvantage is that they are normally a minus one advantage when the monster is destroyed. The Noble Arms cards and Peredur all work to nullify that disadvantage. Noble Knight Peredur will soon become a staple in Noble Knight Decks. My ratings on this card reflect Noble Knight’s impact to the Meta.

Sylvan Hermitree

Howdy there today's card is Sylvan Hermitree, the new Archetype of Legacy of the Valiant and the big monster of the set, he is like the Deku Tree of Plants in Yugioh, draw power as well as adds consistency to the deck if "excavated" which I enjoy them adding a new wording or else Lightsworn/Plants would be a 60 card deck that could ftk somehow....not fun.

Traditional: 2/5 (Needs more support)
Advanced: 3/5 (Once more support comes this deck is going to be A LOT of fun)

Art: 5.5/5 He looks so cool, I could only imagine him coming out on the show and little Sylvan monsters hanging from him, and randomly Link is there :P

Baneful

Sylvan Hermitree

Hello, my little saplings!  Glad to see you've made it to Friday, and I say saplings for a reason, because today we're reviewing a tree monster.  For those who don't already know, the new term “excavate” in YGO means to reveal a card from the top of the deck.

To be clear, this card only belongs in a Sylvan deck. It both fuels the engine and is fueled by it. Without the engine of you constantly excavating cards, this card is useless on it's own. At level 8, it's quite hard to summon, but cards like Miracle Fertilizer support plants, it's far from impossible to bring out. Though can still be a pain, the silver mountain can help you discard it.  It's first effect on-field can net you some card advantage, help activate the other trees and gives you graveyard power. The second effect lets you stack the deck in your favor, which can trigger the other effects.

If you haven't looked at the other Sylvan cards, it's quite easy to conclude that this card is bad, but it's well supported by numerous cards and is overall the glue that holds much of the Sylvan deck together. Even if it doesn't reach the heights of flagship monsters like Judgment Dragon, Hermitree still helps the theme noticeably.

Traditional: 2/5 (Mediocre) – Trad doesn't like saplings very much :(

Advanced: 4/5 (Very Good) – in context of the deck type

The forest is a lonely place. You'll get lost and probably meat trees with creepy faces, see plants that look tasty but have faces so you can't eat them and you'll be sad. Sad, my guppies.

Sylvian Hermitree lets Sylvan do Sylvan things. That is, excavate, dump monsters and then do normal Plant-type things.

Tradit-

What? You want more? Fine. He gives you +1s if you Excavate him and then lets you stack the next three cards you draw. That alone is pretty good, and in addition to the usual Sylvan checking, is quite a benefit. Now most boss monsters these days summon themselves, so how can this guy that doesn't compete? Well, that's where the field spell comes in, which allows you then Excavate stuff. Furthermore, it's a plant so stuff like Miracle Fertilizer, Melia and Lonefire Blossom lets Special Summoning easy as pie. Most of the Sylvan plays requires this guy doing the grunt work, so as of this writing, you should be main decking 2 or 3 of him.

Advanced: 3.5/5
