Baneful

Today, we'll be looking at our second Pendulum monster.  I wrote a brief explanation of what Pendulum monsters do in yesterday's review of Stargazer Magician, so today Ill jump straight to the card.

Timegazer Magician

As a LV3 monster (compared to Stargazer's LV5), it is quite easier to summon.  However, it still has weak ATK.  Its on-field effect is a bit better than its companion's, as it will protect you from the likes of MST screwing up your pendulum summon.  Still don't count on such a weak monster surviving for long.

As a Pendulum spell, it is a mixed bag.  The restriction of having to control no monsters to activate this card is needlessly imposing, especially when Pendulum Summoning itself exists in such unbridled joy.  The effect of not allowing your opponent to use traps in the Battle Phase in response to an attack is quite good, but it only affects Pendulum Monsters.  In time, there may be powerful Pendulum Monsters I would want to attack with, but right now the last thing I'm worrying about is having my monsters with 1200 ATK clear for an attack.

Then, there's the restriction of this scale-8 Pendulum becoming a scale-4 if another "Odd-Eyes" or "Magician" Pendulum isn't present in your other Pendulum Zone. Timegazer Magician's restriction hurts more than Stargazer Magician's restriction.  The latter's restriction only prevents you from summoning low-level monsters, but this card's restriction  can cut you off from summoning high-level monsters since you expect it to be a scale-8.  Nonetheless, this shouldn't be a worry if you run both.

Assessments

Power – 3/5 ; As a card itself, it's quite weak, so I guess it depends how much faith you have in Pendulum Summoning.  Swarming the field with monsters (especially monsters which negate effects) seems powerful to me.

Versatility – 2/5 ; Its effects are situational.  On top of that, it won't do you much good if you draw a duplicate whilst waiting for Stargazer Magician to be drawn.

Accessibility – 3/5 ; No costs (though it does sit in your hand for a while), but it lacks seachers in the TCG right now.

Card Advantage – 3/5 ; The Pendulum abilities allow this card to be a floater when destroyed in the Spell/Trap Zone, though as a monster itself its not very capable.

Speed – 5/5 ; No red tape.  Got two Pendulum Spells on the field?  You're ready to start Pendulum Summoning!

Ratings

Traditional – 3/5 ; Isn't great but has a monopoly on Pendulum Summoning.

Advanced – 3/5 ; Isn't great but has a monopoly on Pendulum Summoning.

Mechanic Design – 3/5 ; Balanced.  The monster effects of this card are situational for sure, but are more practical since they involved protection during Battle Phase and protection from destruction.

Artwork – 4/5 ; The background arts on these Pendulum Monsters are definitely cool!  As is the black ninja-like clothing on this magician.  Its weapon seems rather uncomfortable to hold though.  It seems cumbersome, but looks unique for sure.

Verdict

Decent enough until better Pendulum Monsters come out.

DARK/Spellcaster/Pendulum/Effect/Level 3/1200/600 Left Pendulum Scale: 8 Right Scale:8 Pendulum Effect : You must control no monsters to activate this card. Unless you have a "Magician" card or "Odd-Eyes" card in your other Pendulum Zone, this card's Pendulum Scale becomes 4.

Wrapping up this week we have Pilica, Descendant of Gusto a new addition to the Gusto Archetype. Statwise it is a WIND/Psychic which is quite common for Gusto, with 1000 ATK and 1500 DEF both or average for a level 3.

Continuing our look at the new Super Starter: Space-Time Showdown  Deck, we look at the only other Pendulum Monster available in the deck; Timegazer Magician used by Yuya in the Arc-V anime.

Statwise it is a level 3 DARK/Spellcaster which is a good combination with 1200 ATK and 600 DEF both are quite mediocre for a level 3 monster. It has a Pendulum Scale of 8 which is very good.

Before we look at its Pendulum Effect it has a Pendulum Condition, which prevents you from activating this card unless you have no monsters. This is a really bad condition and something a lot of people might overlook. Effectwise it has a similar effect to its Counterpart Stargazer Magician but this time with traps making this a really handy Pendulum Effect but as with Stargazer it is only really useful if you are playing a lot of Pendulum Monsters. Also as with Stargazer its Pendulum Scale becomes 4 unless you have another Magician or Odd-Eyes in the Pendulum Zone; which is bad.

Its Monster Effect, allows you to once per turn to protect your Pendulum Zone cards from being destroyed, it’s a nice effect but not worth summoning a weak monster.

Overall, while it does have a scale of 8, its condition and low stats do really hurt its playability and as with Stargazer it is reliant on you playing a lot of Pendulum Monsters.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Second Pendulum Monster of the week, this time it's Timegazer Magician. Lets look at it in two separate parts.

As a Spell Card in your Pendulum Zone, this card stops your opponent from activating Trap Cards until the end of the Damage Step if you have a Pendulum Monster attacking or being attacked. This is great if you are using multiple Pendulum Monsters in a deck (which you would be if you run this card). The scale for this card shrinks to 4 if a “Magician” or “Odd Eyes” Pendulum Monster isn't in the other Pendulum Zone, so this card will play well with yesterdays CoTD: Stargazer Magician, completing a 1-8 Pendulum Zone. Doing this allows you a full-range of Pendulum Summoning monsters levels 2-7.

As a monster, its stats are low, but its effect prevents your Pendulum Zone cards from being destroyed once per turn. Mystic Tomato can bring Timegazer to the field, and you can get it back from the grave with Dark Eruption, but Timegazer is a monster that is built more for the Pendulum Zone than the Monster Zone.

Use this guy to complete your Pendulum Scale and start swarming.

It would seem I missed yesterday's card. What could I have possibly been doing, you might be wondering. The answer is as you would naturally be inclined to expect it to be: I was off being awesome. Awesome, indeed.

Behold, thou blessed followers, watch quietly as the ZeXal era comes to a close and the Arc-V era begins. What better way to kick off this era than with the best Pendulum engine in DUEA: the Magician-Odd-Eyes engine. This, dearies, is one third of that engine, Timegazer Magician. What he does, when paired with his life-partner, Stargazer Magician, is allow you to Pendulum Summon a bunch of monsters between Levels 1 and 8. I'm sure you can tell just how much potential is there to be tapped.

Recently we reviewed the Mega Monarchs. Pendulum helps these guys become more practical. You can Pendulum summon a monster from your hand, then tribute it. Or there's this cute little combo of using Samsara Kaiser for the tributes, but then you lose the Attribute bonus that comes with the non-Zaborg ones. Just something I found quite funny, since Samsara Kaiser was originally printed in a Monarch structure deck, but was completely useless back then. Another thing you can do, and the most obvious really, is using Pendulum Summons to make Synchros and Xyz monsters.

As for the card itself, beyond the game mechanic, while in the Pendulum Zone is essentially makes your Pendulum monsters Ancient Gears in that you have no battle phase activations to worry about (outside of when you aren't attacking, anyway). While it is a monster it makes all of your Pendulums resistant to destruction, but you'll never be playing this as a monster, so it's a moot point.

Here's where the negative kicks in. The Odd-Eyes engine is nine cards, so your devotion to this deck has to be immense. The Magicians are also restrictive in what you can pair them with, as when not together their scales become 4.

Now, allow me to give you some miscellaneous facts about this card:

1. Timegazer Magician is a card.

2. Timegazer Magician wears a mask and has Yusei hair, therefore he must be Z-ONE.

3. At least he looks cooler than Stargazer.

4. Known to give shivers.

Timegazer Magician

Sorry to my loyal Millions...AND MILLIONS.....of fans...oh who am I kidding, there's probably like 5 of you. Internet was down most of the weekend and came back on late this morning so I missed a couple reviews. Today we look at the other half of the Gazer Mage pendulum monsters, Timegazer Magician. At level 3 and 1200 atk it's a pretty big weakling. The monster effect is pretty sweet allowing you to prevent destruction of pendulum zone cards. Personally that'd have been a better actual Pendulum effect. I like how it words card(s), so if a mass destruction effect were activated, it'd protect both. It's an 8 scale, so it's perfect to drop Dragon Rulers, Hieratics, Gadgets and so much more with out wasting a normal summon.

Traditional - 1/5 this mechanic will likely NEVER catch on in traditional. Had they not errata'd catapult turtle it'd have been pretty awesome.

Advanced 2/5 right now, at this moment, pendulums are far too gimmicky because we have TWO. Granted they started us off right with a 1 and a 8 for scales, they're not searchable by any real means and you have to dedicate too much to making them work. Once we get Odd Eyes Pendulum Dragon, the ...crazy things I dont feel like google searching for the correct spelling..qilpoth...and some others in the near future it could be a solid mechanic. Personally we got the better end off the bat with synchros/xyzs considering colossal/utopia remained near staples for quite some time after the mechanic debuted.
