Welcome to Thursday of Space-Time Showdown Week!  Today we'll be reviewing a bad card that is nothing like its much superior Pendulum Monster counterpart.

Odd-Eyes Dragon

This card may have been semi-decent 10 years ago (if that). In an era of archetypes, this card doesn't really seem to fit in any deck as it does nothing that would help any archetype. With an overall lack of effects, its quite a bland card. Usually competitive big monsters have an effect which grants you card advantage or an effect which locks the opponent down or takes away from their card advantage. This card does no such thing. All its effect does is a little bit of burn (realistically, up to 1200 damage). Even "burn" decks have 100 better options.

Not worth the double-tribute at all and there's so many better monsters out there that you could be Special Summoning.

Assessments

Power – 1/5 ; It has somewhat high ATK and inflicts effect damage.  This is what newer players tend to think power means.

Versatility – 1/5 ; This card screams dead-draw if anything.  And there's not a single situation in which I would want it.

Accessibility – 1/5 ; Two tributes is a far-too-high cost for a monster that does nothing important.

Card Advantage – 1/5 ; It lacks an effect that would either plus you or minus your opponent.

Speed – 1/5 ; Waiting until you have two-tributes takes up too much time.  And there's no exclusive ways to Special Summon this.

Advanced – 1/5 ; If it were in the set Labyrinth of Nightmare, it may have gotten a 2.

Mechanic Design – 1/5 ; Really lazy card design.  Severely underpowered.

Artwork – 3/5 ; The dragon itself is bland and awkwardly posed, but the background is quite nice.

Verdict

This card sucks!  Don't bother with it.

Odd-Eyes Dragon is the premier boss monster of the newest Yu-Gi-Oh protagonist, Yuya Sakaki. This card bares some striking similarities to Dark Magician and Yugi in the sense that it has similar stats of 2500 attack and some what similar defense of 2100 to Dark Magicians 2000. Also, both Odd-Eyes Dragon and Dark Magician are level 7, and dark type. It is also quite coincidental how Odd- Eyes Dragon is a Dragon type and he turns into Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon through Spellcaster type monsters, which is what Dark Magician was, complimenting the original Dragon theme of Blue Eyes White Dragon as well.

As far as useful effect monsters go, however, Odd-Eyes Dragon is one weak card. And he completely lacks necessity unlike his counter part, Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon which will debut in Duelist Alliance. Being level 7 means 2 tributes to summon him, and 2500 attack is very low. The effect to inflict half the original attack of the destroyed monster which is sent to the graveyard by this card is pitiful at best as well since that is a lofty amount of requirements in order to activate, and even when it does resolve it is a weak effect which halves the damage of the attack value when it could of just used the full value itself and still not been overpowered by any means.

In other words, this card is just garbage. And only fun for fans of the anime, not for fans of the game of Duel Monsters.

Odd-Eyes Dragon

Continuing our look at the new Super Starter: Space-Time Showdown deck; we look at Odd-Eyes Dragon and not Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon that’s a complete different monster. Odd-Eyes Dragon was Yuya’s trump card until it transformed in Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon. Odd-Eyes Dragon and the Ultra Rare Dark Hole (reviewed tomorrow) are the two guaranteed cards from the Super Starter Power-Up Pack which comes with the Super Starter: Space-Time Showdown deck.

Statwise it is a DARK/Dragon which is good with 2500 ATK and 2000 DEF both are acceptable for a level 7 and consistent with a Main Hero monster.
 
Effectwise it has an effect similar to another Main Hero monster, Elemental HERO Flame Wingman, but in this case it only does damage equal to half the original ATK instead of all the attack. Still with 2500 ATK it can make a decent bit of use with its effect. Of course you can use your two Magician Pendulum Monsters to summon this card, thought you are probably going to wait for its Pendulum Counter part instead.

Overall a pretty average dragon, nothing massively wrong with this card but this won’t see much play as everyone will be going for Odd-Eyes Pendulum
Dragon instead.

If you’ve heard people talking about that awesome new Odd-Eyes Dragon monster, I guarantee they aren’t talking about this one. They’re probably talking about Odd-Eyes Pendulum Dragon, which is coming out in Duelist Alliance. This Odd-Eyes Dragon is anything but awesome. In fact, it’s pretty bad.

Being Level 7 is already a red flag, especially when the monster has no way of Special Summoning itself; Tributing two monsters just doesn’t cut it these days, especially on a monster that has no means of protecting itself. Its stats are pretty subpar as well: 2500 ATK and 2000 DEF is not terribly difficult to get over anymore, with the large amount of monsters in recent times that can surpass that number.

Odd-Eyes Dragon’s effect is one we’ve seen quite a few times by now; it’s nearly identical to that of Elemental HERO Flame Wingman, except it only deals damage equal to half the monster’s original ATK. So they took an effect from 2004 and made it weaker.

Now, I haven’t watched ARC-V yet (seeing as I still have yet to finish ZEXAL), but from what I’ve heard, this is the original form of Yuya’s ace monster, before it transformed into its Pendulum form. I guess that explains why it seems subpar, as this isn’t even its final form. Still, it doesn’t change the fact that the card is terribly underwhelming by today’s standards. In fact, it probably would have been underwhelming ten years ago.

I’d pass on this one. Unless you are just now getting into Yu-Gi-Oh!, this card is definitely not worth it.
