Mermail Abyssgunde

I don't have much of a review here because I don't have a ton of experience with Mermails. All I know is that this is a really good card that can 1-for-1 or +1, whilst building up your field presence.

All Mermail decks should use 1 copy of this card, because this is what it is limited to, though I'm not sure if I would've used 3 to begin with, as it's a card that benefits mid to late game. Traditional Format has more ways to discard this, but doesn't like archetypes so this will shine more in Advanced.

What else can I say about a card that seems to have everything going for it?

Terrorking Did you know Premature Burial is banned mostly because it's reusable monster revival?

If you did, today's card being restricted shouldn't come as much of a surprise to you. Mermail Abyssgunde is a themed Premature Burial, of sorts, of which you can run three. See, Mermails like to discard each other for their on-field effects, and often times the ones you discard have effects that kick in when discarded, so you often times lose nothing and only gain. Generally, anything that results in such easy +1s in card advantage err on the side of being a broken card. I don't think I need to explain why reviving any "Mermail" monster off of just one card is good or what combos you could execute off that one revival.

Mermail Abyssgunde had become the primary discard for Mermail decks.  Like Dragoons (which is also at 1), it contributed to help make more powerful combo plays.  The other primary discard monsters, Heavy Infantry and Marksman, mitigate the discard cost by simplifying the game state.  Special summoning a monster through Abyssgunde was seen as preferable.  I would tend to agree with this position, as Abyssgunde allowed for powerful rank 4 plays when combined with Abysspike.  Abyssgunde also helped with rank 7 plays by being able to special an Abyssmegalo or Abyssteus.

Unlike the Atlanteans, Abyssgunde doesn't work with Genex Undine, which was a factor in it not seeing as much play until Mono Mermails became a deck.  Abyssgunde does however have the benefit of getting its effect when it is discarded by something other than a Water monster.  This allowed for essentially costless Raigeki Breaks and Phoenix Wing Wind Blasts, which is always a good thing.

Now that the card is at 1, it is a little worse.  It doesn't make as much sense anymore to run Raigeki Break or PWWB with it.  It still is an obvious choice in Mermails, however.  Abyssturge might see an increase in play to recycle Abyssgunde.

Rating: 4/5 (Very Good)
