We looked at the original Morphing Jar to open the week and close the week with Morphing Jar #2.  This Jar totally deserves to be Banned.  It doesn't "reset" a Duel as Fiber Jar does, but it can just wreck everything.  I get too that this is sort of unbalanced like Morphing Jar as it can bite you in the ass and/or not help you at all aside from blowing up the Field of Monsters.  I'd venture a guess most players don't have experience with this.  Most of my comes from older Yugioh video games but it's never a fun thing to set off.  For those of you who haven't seen it blow up on you, consider yourselves lucky.

Morphing Jar #2

What I said about Morphing Jar 1 applies double here. A control-based deck (most of the decks out there) have little reason to run this. Since it's destroyed when attacked, your opponent gets card advantage out of this.

The main appeal of this card is the annoyance of watching cards from both players decks being sent to the graveyard. This card has found home in Empty Jar, where it couldn't find a sense of place anywhere else.

It's still semi-viable in Traditional Format Empty Jar, but with this card at 1 (in that format) and so many other decks you can play, I don't know.  It's a Jar that doesn't draw you cards.  There's not too much to be excited about.

We started this week with a Morphing Jar, and today we end with another.

Morphing Jar 2 is a powerful card that's always been around not doing anything. It's never done anything. The only place it has ever found a home is in mill decks, and those have never done anything either. Rightyo. However, unlike with the first morphing Jar, I can fathom why this got hit. The game is skewing to Extra Deck focus, and this card absolutely obliterates the Extra deck monsters and decks that overly-rely on them. I don't agree with that reasoning since it makes all the decks homogeneous when you cull anything that's different or dares to punish sameness, but it is what it is. Excellent card, but not for the vast majority of decks.

Trivia: Despite the original Morphing Jar being in the original Yu-Gi-Oh, this card is a Konami-original and has never appeared in the anime.

Morphing Jar #2 was a good side deck card that fell victim to an unfortunate OTK.  By itself, it is simply monster removal that doesn't target or destroy.  This is most effective against extra deck monsters like Dracossack or Silent Honor ARK.  Because Morphing Jar #2 doesn't shuffle extra deck monsters into the main deck, your opponent doesn't get to special summon monsters to replace them.  This is quite powerful against certain decks reliant on the extra deck.

Of course, Morphing Jar #2 is much less effective against main decked monsters.  Your opponent will likely summon monsters to replace them, meaning you lost card advantage when your Jar more than likely died in battle.  Morphing Jar #2 is also balanced by the fact that it is a flip effect, which inherently makes it a very slow card.  These downsides relegated Morphing Jar #2 to the side deck.

Until recently, Morphing Jar #2 wasn't involved in any degenerate decks, like its brother, the original Morphing Jar, was.  To cause decking out problems with Morphing Jar #2, your opponent would have to run almost no monsters.  You can, however, use Morphing Jar #2 to deck out yourself if you only run Morphing Jars.  Normally, this strategy would be suicide, but a new card in Primal Origins allows this strategy to give you an alternate win condition.  If you use Creature Swap or Mystic Box to give control of Morphing Jar #2 to your opponent, then you can mill your deck to the grave, and you can win by milling 3 copies of the upcoming card Jackpot 7.  In order to kill the deck without semi-limiting the new card Jackpot 7 (which Konami doesn't like to do), they banned Morphing Jar #2 instead.

Rating: 3.5/5 if legal (Good)
