Dark

Paladin

Gate Blocker, a 5Ds era card, involving preventing the opponent from gaining Speed Counters from the effects of Speed World...as you might guess, isn't quite the same here. This guy is pretty legit though, I almost put him in my week last week. He negates the power of your opponents Field Magic cards, so that's a plus. Your opponent also can't place any counters on cards on the Field, which is useful enough against the right Deck. Plus your opponent can't target other Monsters of your own control for other card effects. He does a lot, he's actually brought down a bit being a Rock, yet ironically would shine most there. Earth is meh, as is the 100 attack, but the 2000 defense might do something for you. This guy isn't anywhere near as bad as his lack of playability is going to suggest. The environment just isn't good enough for him...or he's too good for it. Keep one in the side-deck though.

Gate Blocker
EARTH/Rock/Effect/Level 4/100/2000
Negate the effects of your opponent's Field Spell Cards. Your opponent cannot place counters on cards on the field. Your opponent cannot target other monsters you control for card effects.

Next up is a card that is favoured by Neo Domino City’s Sector Security and their first turn opener Gate Blocker. In the anime, it was used to stop crookers from speeding off into the sunset and prevent them from getting Speed Counters.

Statwise, it is actually standard for a Level 4 EARTH/Rock; low ATK (in this case 100) and 2000 DEF. Effectwise, it actually does a very good job or replicating and improving on the original anime card. It now negates the effect of your opponent’s field card (which will be handy when the two field card rule comes in effect) and the opponent cannot play any counters on any cards, which in the right deck could be crippling. Also this card can protect your other monsters from targeting effects. Three nice effects with no apart from this needed to be face up have no other costs or conditions. Still this card would work for every deck nor be useful against everything, only decks that require a lot of Fields and or Counters, or until Speed World is made into a real card.

Overall, a solid defender with three nice effects but it is only useful against certain decks, maybe a useful side card.

Baneful

Gate Blocker

This is a card whose viability will greatly depend on the meta and what decks are out there, but since it has three different effects, it's quite versatile.  Field Spells and counters are commonly found in archetypes so against the right archetypes (who knows, maybe soon to be archetypes, it's going to be good).

It's true potential may come in protecting other monsters you control from being targeted, but even then, you have to keep this guy alive in order to do so.  The big weakness is its weak ATK strength, something you will have to protect if you want to get it out face-up by normal summoning it.  Otherwise, you'll have to find a way to Special Summon it in (or switch it to) defense position.

It may not have much relevance at this moment, but it's a card that might be worth holding on to because it could be a good side-deck card at some point.  Still, I would rather just side Twister to get rid of Field Spells (and spells that take counters).  It's much faster and it doesn't take up a summon.

Terrorking

"Gotta go fast! SANIC! Gotta go faster! SANIC! Gotta go faster, faster, faster, faster, faster—SANIC X!"

Oh wait, that's the wrong show. Uh... the lyrics of the English 5D's songs escape my memory at the moment (but you should totally look up "Believe in Nexus" and "Road to Tomorrow," both done by Masaaki Endoh). I bring this up because today we look at another Dragons of Legend card: one that is neither a dragon nor is it legendary. This was played in the third duel of 5D's by officer Ushio, in an attempt to defeat Yusei.

Hello, my beautiful little sky crawlers, and welcome to Terrorking's review of not Goyo Guardian, but Gate Blocker! In the anime, he had the effect of stopping players from getting Speed Counters, which you generally needed in Riding duels. In the real game, he stays true to his anime effect in stopping counters from being placed and shutting down field spells, but he also has a little extra: he forces your opponent to target him.

This card is practically made for the side deck. You won't ever be maindecking him unless Venom becomes some super powered archetype, or Spell counters make a triumphant return. If they do, this guy will be a nightmare for them. Sadly, I must judge him on his merits right now, and not what he can become in the future. Before getting to that, I must admit Konami knocked this one out of the park. They did a good job converting this from anime to real life, unlike so many other cards in this set.
