Herald of the Arc Light

Welcome all! This is going to be a very special theme week. It's Knee Surgery week. There will be no review on Friday because every single member of the COTD team will be having knee surgery at the same time. Also, this is the very first week we review cards from the new expansion The New Challengers.

Also, to correct an error I made in a previous review. Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror does NOT negate Crazy Box's continuous effect. Sorry about that.

Onto Arc Light... This ball of sunshine is full of different effects. There aren't a lot of quality LV4 Synchros out there. Armory Arm is it. Since this card doesn't require a lot of levels, it's easy to summon. It's a Banisher-like lockdown that can kill some decks. And on top of that, it's a 1-for-1 insta-negation that can be used defensively or to help push advances.

When sent to the graveyard, you can add a Ritual card to your hand. This doesn't make much sense in the context of it dying on the field but the upcoming archetype Nekroz/Necloths, it gains an entire new one. It can be sent as a cost for Kaleidomirror (the ritual spell for that deck type). This means that (a) the card is essentially costless and (b) the ritual summon pays for itself.
Stock up on Arc Light for the Nekroz/Necloth monsters, but also get this card because it's a good LV4 Synchro in its own right.

Herald of the Arc Light

This cards true potential will not be seen until February. This card currently has no main use in the current metagame. With the release of Nekroz in February you will send this card from the extra deck to the grave to search for ritual support. One of the most powerful cards to fuel one of the most powerful decks to come.

Herald of the Arc Light isn't the strongest Synchro Monster out there, but it has a lot of good things going for. Being a Fairy helps, as does being Light, but being Level 4 with 600 attack and defense is troublesome, even if it really isn't supposed to be an attacker or defender. For a plus to start, any Monster card sent to the Graveyard is removed from play instead, which can be quite the bane to your opponent. Secondly, you can tribute this card when a Magic or Trap card is activated, or a Monster activates its effect, to negate that cards effect, and if you're successful, said card is destroyed. Lastly, when sent to the Graveyard, you can add a Ritual Magic or Monster card from your Deck to your Hand. That boosts playability in a Ritual Deck sure, but how many of you are playing Rituals at all right now? It's not a bad card, despite what the score may say, the environment just isn't friendly to it right now.

Herald of the Arc Light

Starting this week off with one of the latest “Herald” monsters to be released, and one that I feel has just a little hidden potential.

Unfortunately this card has very low ATK and DEF stats, so if you cannot protect it you’ll not be able to hurt your opponent with this cards effect(s) past Main Phase 1.

It’s first, continuous effect is well suited for hurting such Decks as Shaddoll’s, Lightsworn’s, Sylvan’s and Mermail’s as well as Decks that would normally be able to make use of cards such as Mathematician, Kuribandit or Foolish Burial.

What is worth noting about the first part of this cards effect is that it only Banishes cards sent from the Hand or Main Deck to the Graveyard, so once a monster card is on the field it essentially becomes “Safe”… From being Banished anyhow!

This cards next effect is actually rather handy since it can essentially force your opponent to waste a card in order to work around it. As it can Negate the activation of any Spell, Trap or Monsters effect and then destroy it, this card can be used to deal with practically any card that may cause you problems at the time.

Importantly, Herald of the Arc Light Tributes itself in order to use this effect, this means that Skill Drain and Fiendish Chain are of no issue when it comes to using this effect, and it also means that it can be played in a Deck that uses Skill Drain.

And finally, when it’s sent to the Graveyard you can add 1 Ritual monster or Ritual Spell card from your Deck to your hand. While this does seem very useful if used in a Deck that does Ritual Summon, I feel that the fact that this card provides support to Ritual Decks shouldn’t be the only reason to consider playing this card.

However, if you are using this in a Ritual Deck, using this cards effect to Negate an opponents card and then because (it should) it goes to the Graveyard, you can then add a Ritual Monster or Ritual Spell card to your hand, essentially meaning that this card now gains you card advantage, and this is something that Ritual Decks lack for the most part.

This effect also works if detached from an Xyz monster as the effect does not specify where it must come from, only that it must be sent to the Graveyard.

Herald of the Arc Light has the potential to provide useful support to Decks as Gishki and Herald of Perfection as well as Ritual Decks in general, Agents and Yang Zing.

Traditional: 2.5. I actually see use for this card here, and because it’s also a Light-type this makes it only more useful.

Advanced: 3.5. While this score is more of one that I’ve given for Decks that can effectively use it, this certainly has the potential to cause headaches, especially if one were to face a Deck that can Summon and protect this easily. And a Level 4 Synchro really is not all that difficult to Summon.

Herald of the Arc Light

We return to our look at The New Challengers with a new Synchro monster Herald of the Arc Light.

Statwise Herald of the Arc Light is a Level 4 Synchro monster which is quite rare and not exactly the easiest level to get out, but it is generic so that is a big help. It is a LIGHT/Fairy which is what you want in a fairy with 600 ATK and 1000 DEF both are terrible for a level 4 and completely horrific for a level 4 Synchro.

Of course with horrible stats it must have a great effect or two, and indeed it does, though it also seems like it doesn’t know what it wants to be. The first effect banishes any monsters sent from the hand or deck to the Graveyard. This stops decks like Darkworld, Lightsworn and to an extend Shaddolls, as well as wrecking cards like Foolish Burial. So overall a very good effect, of course it will affect you as well so bare that in mind.
The second effect is common with the Herald series, the ability to negate effects. Herald of the Arc Light follows on this tradition by being able to tribute itself to negate and destroy any card effect. Another great effect and it nicely leads on to the final effect.

The final effect allows you to search for a ritual monster/spell if this card is sent to the graveyard. Great for ritual support and I’m suspecting Konami had Herald of Perfection and Herald of Ultimateness in mind when they created this card.

Overall great effects but the fact that it is a Synchro Monster and its low stats means it will be lucky to ever use 2 of those effects, really hurt this card.

Herald of the Arc Light is one of the two new cards in the “Herald of” series of monsters, and is the first Synchro Monster. It is Level 4 and has a measly 600 ATK and 1000 DEF, making it a very weak monster in terms of stats. Where it shines though is its effects.

Its first effect banishes any monster sent from the hand or Main Deck to the Graveyard; this is a slightly weaker version Dimensional Fissure that can still hamper Decks like Shaddoll and Burning Abyss. Additionally, when a Spell/Trap Card or monster effect is activated, you can Tribute Herald to negate and destroy it.

But where Herald really shines is its last effect, which adds a Ritual Monster or Ritual Spell Card from your Deck to your hand if its sent to the Graveyard (note: this cannot miss timing). While this already has uses if you Tribute Herald for its own effect, it’ll become very important when the Nekroz monsters are released in The Secret Forces in February; the Nekroz are Ritual based, and have not only a Level 4 Ritual Monster, but also a Ritual Spell Card that can use monsters in the Extra Deck as Tribute fodder. This allows you to use Herald as a Tribute straight from the Extra Deck and also activate its search effect.

For the time being, Herald of the Arc Light doesn’t fit well in many Decks. In due time, however, this will be a card to watch out for.
