Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei

In short, you keep it in DEF mode and its a 3500 defense wall.  During your turn, it attacks in Defense Position much like Total Defense Shogun.  But when it does attack it has a whopping 3500 ATK.

Its ATK may as well have been 3500, except the fact that its original ATK is 1000 makes it work with other card effects a bit differently.  So, while Limiter Removal won't work on this big guy, the trap card known as "D2 Shield" will, and it will incur a scary extra 3500 damage onto your opponent.

I've been Big Benkei used in Machina/Gadget decks.  It has more than enough stars to be a discard for Machina Fortress, and you can summon this card for free with the Continuous Spell Card called Machina Armored Unit.  You can use Giant Rat to pull a 3500 beater ; not bad.

As for the merit of the Superheavy Samurai archetype itself, it doesn't have a ton going for it.  Blue Brawler is 2000 DEF wall that can't be destroyed in battle.  Swordsman is an 1800 defense wall that drops your opponent's monsters ATK to zero when battling cards such as this.

So, yeah, there are some combos.  This card won't ever be competitive, but it could totally win in locals.

Assessments

Power – 3 ; Very very powerful in the conventional sense.  Brawn aside, it is a little bit lacking.

Versatility – 3/5 ; High-ATK monsters (that aren't a nightmare to summon) are rarely not useful.

Dependability – 2/5 ; Needs other cards to combo with it.  Not a great draw opening hand.

Card Advantage – 3/5 ; Massive floater can get over anything ; they will need to use removal on this.

Speed – 2/5 ; This card isn't hard to crank out but it will generally take a turn.

Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei

Wrapping up this week we look at Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei the main monster of Noboru “The Man” Gongenzaka  from Yu-Gi-Oh! Arc-V.

Statwise it is a level 8 EARTH/Machine which is good with 1000 ATK and 3500 DEF which is typical for a low ATK/High DEF monster.

Effectwise, first of when it is summoned you can change its Battle Position which is really handy and means you can special summon this with cards like Giant Rat and then automatically change it to DEF mode. Its main effect is something a very rare effect, it allows all “Superheavy Samurai” Monster to ATK while in DEF mode and during Damage Calculation you apply their DEF. This is a good effect, first off all “Superheavy Samurai” Monsters have High DEF allowing you to do really good damage, also cards like Mirror Force are next to useless as the monster isn’t in ATK mode. Of course you have to remember if any “Superheavy Samurai” Monsters attacks a stronger monster they are still destroyed by battle.

Overall, easy to summon with a fun and interesting effect, its not going to set the duel world alight though. Definitely one for people who want to have fun or try something very different.

Hello Pojo Fans,

Today we have the gem of the new “Superheavy Samurai” archetype: Superheavy Samurai Big Benkei. While being a level 8 with only 1000ATK isn't great at all, the ability to change its battle position when summoned is when boasting 3500DEF. Benkei allows all “Superheavy Samurai” monsters to attack while in defense position and apply their DEF instead of ATK. Superheavy Samurais can use this effect to keep safe behind their beefy DEF while using that same DEF to do damage to the opponent. Benkei is the main weapon for “Superheavy Samurai” monsters to use to overwhelm their opponent and destroy their monsters. All “Superheavy Samurai” are EARTH-based Machine-Type monsters that can be Special Summoned from the deck by Giant Rat, and Benkei could also be discarded using Trade In and Special Summoned later, or equip it or another “Superheavy Samurai” with “Break! Draw!” to give you more drawing options.

Benkei is a monster that could be thrown into an EARTH-heavy deck, as you don't need another “Superheavy Samurai” for its effects to work, but it belongs in 3's in its archetype deck.
