Symbol of Heritage

With Premature and Reborn banned, in an era of archetypes that run a lot of cards in 3's and need Special Summoning, this card has certainly gotten stronger.  With Lonefire Blossom at 3, Sylvans can now use a copy of it.  Overall, it's a situational card, one that isn't good early game for most decks but it has some potential.

Welcome to Ban Week Part Deux!!  Symbol of Heritage opens our week.  You're allowed to Special Summon a Monster from your Graveyard if you have three of said Monster, whatever it may be, residing in your Graveyard.  Destroying this card sends the Monster back to the Graveyard.  This is a great card for any theme deck that fits the criteria you're going to run three of any Monster or Monsters.  But timing is a problem with this card.  Its a mid to late game card.  You need all three copies in the Graveyard to use this remember.  Still good though

I very briefly touched upon Symbol of Heritage last week when we reviewed Lonefire Blossom. The card is, quite simply, a Premature Burial with no Life Point cost, but there must be at least three copies of the target monster.

This seems like a neat card for a Deck like Harpies (if they didn’t have Hysteric Party), but the problem with Symbol of Heritage is that it is quite literally Premature Burial with the above restrictions; much like the former, if it gets bounced instead of destroyed, the equipped monster stays on the field. This causes the same looping problems.

The old approach that was taken whenever something made this card a problem was to Semi-Limit whatever monster was interacting with it; the most notable case of this is Lonefire Blossom (which is why this card went to 1 in exchange for Lonefire going to 3), but another card that got hit with a Semi-Limit was Dewloren, Tiger King of the Ice Barrier (who is currently Limited); because of his ability to bounce cards you control, and with Synchro spam being the most popular strategy at his time of release, it was incredibly easy to get three of him out, Tribute them all for a burn card like Mass Driver or Dark Strike Fighter, and then revive one with Symbol of Heritage. You then bounced Heritage for Dewloren, Tributed it for more damage, and repeated until game.

While neither the aforementioned loops nor Lonefire Blossom would be problematic realistically, Symbol of Heritage is still an unhealthy card that is used primarily for loops and not much else. It’s a restricting card that limits what you can do with future self-interacting monsters. It would be better to nip this in the bud now than to let it become a major issue in the future. The third Lonefire does make it a neat option for Sylvan Decks to effectively act as a single-use fourth copy of Miracle Fertilizer.
