Red-Eyes monsters are getting quite a bit of support
in the upcoming weeks. If OCG results are anything
to go by, it apparently isn’t enough for them to do
well, but thankfully one of their new cards is
generic.
Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon is a Rank 7 monster that
can be made with any two Level 7 monsters. In
today’s metagame Rank 7’s are a bit of a thing of
the past; with the Dragon Rulers lying dormant on
the Forbidden List and Mermails currently nowhere
near relevant, we haven’t seen a good Rank 7 Deck in
quite a while.
While it may not have much use in the current
metagame, Rank 7’s do have a bit of a future ahead
of them; the Magician series of Pendulum Monsters
being released make great use of Rank 7 monsters,
thanks to one of their own monsters as well as their
synergy with the Odd-Eyes monsters (all of which are
Level 7).
So how does Red-Eyes compare to previous Rank 7
monsters? For starters, it boasts a tremendous 2800
ATK, the highest of a generic Rank 7 monster. While
it has an Xyz Material, it cannot be destroyed by
card effects; this makes it similar to Mecha Phantom
Beast Dracossack, although Red-Eyes is not protected
from battle (though with 2800 ATK I don’t think
that’ll be a concern).
While Red-Eyes has Xyz Material, each time your
opponent resolves a card or effect, they take 500
damage. This is the biggest selling point for the
card as it can apply a lot of late game pressure on
the opponent, limiting the number of cards they can
play depending on their remaining LP.
Finally, you can detach an Xyz Material to revive a
“Red-Eyes” Normal Monster from your Graveyard. This
effect is only relevant within its own Deck.
Each of the previous generic Rank 7’s had their own
unique role; Dracossack set up a wall of defense
while also being able to pick off a single threat
per turn, Big Eye allowed you to take control of an
opposing monster, Master of Blades protected you
from targeting effects, and Gaia Dragon dealt
piercing damage. Red-Eyes is no different, and
rather than trying to replace any of these monsters,
it instead adds itself among them, filling its own
purpose. Red-Eyes is a great card to use after a
large push, pressuring your opponent with the threat
of damage for every card they play.
While the current meta may not favor him, you can
expect Red-Eyes Flare Metal Dragon to make a showing
whenever Rank 7 monsters become relevant.

Shifting from Normal/Pendulum, we look at a
Pendulum/XYZ Monster today. Odd-Eyes Rebellion
Dragon is a Rank 7 XYZ Monster, XYZ Summoned with 2
Level 7 Monsters, and is also a 4 on the Pendulum
scale. He's Dark, and a Dragon, and has
3000 attack and 2500 defense, all of these are very
good things. For the Pendulum effect, once a
turn, if you have no other cards in your Pendulum
Zones, you can place a Pendulum Monster from your
Deck in an open Pendulum Zone. Free Monsters
are good, so that's pretty neat and unique I think.
As for Monster effects, this guy does all kinds of
stuff.
If you can Pendulum Summon Level 7, you can Pendulum
Summon this card in your Extra Deck. That's a
nifty ability, it's certainly trying to continue to
grow Pendulum Monsters giving effects like that.
If this card is XYZ Summoned using an XYZ Monster as
an XYZ Material (try to keep up) you're allowed to
destroy as many Level 7 or lower Monsters as
possible your opponent controls AND inflict 1000
Damage for each card destroyed. (Doesn't this guy
seem he should be Fire with an effect like that?)
But we're still note done...if you do so, this card
can attack up to three times in one Battle
Phase...granted only in this turn you're doing all
this, but that should be more than enough to win you
the game. Finally, if destroyed by Battle or
Card Effect in a Monster Zone, by destroying as many
cards in your Pendulum Zone as possible, you can
place this card back in your Pendulum Zone.
Wowzers...honestly, it might not be the most
practical card, and it's just nasty you don't even
have to run an Odd-Eyes Deck to play this guy.
He'll work about anywhere. But he still gets a
favorable score for power, brute force, destruction,
and revival

Hello Pojo Fans,
Cannot be destroyed by card effects while it has Xyz
Material, great start to an Xyz Monster. Rank 7's
are still playable in this format, and this monster
not needing any specific Level 7's may be a good
choice to run. The 500LP damage per card or effect
activate ensures you will at least do 500 damage in
most cases (or force them to use a card they may not
want to use until later). This effect late-game
could be what separates you and your opponent.
“Red-Eyes” decks get a Special Summon helper, able
to hit three potential targets with two Geminai
Monsters and the original REBD.
Decks with Normal Monsters have a lot of Special
Summon support behind them which will aid in the
speed of bringing this monster out. Pendulum
Summoning can also help. Its built-in protection and
the burn effect make it a decent choice for a Rank
7.

There's a handful - not a bushel - of quality
Rank-7's, so this one will certainly be in the
conversation. The 500 damage per card, like
Chain Energy, is a nice perk that certainly helps
but isn't the main reason you'd run this. To
it's advantage, it's a burly 2800 beater with
protection from destruction via card effects.
There are still plenty of non-destruction ways to
remove it, which will prove to be a major weakness
(but it's still a good form of protection).
It's last effect allows you to summon a Red-Eyes
normal monster (unfortunately, you can't bring out
Red Eyes Darkness Metal Dragon, so you're getting
another beater.
While all of these effects are nice to have, none of
them are particularly devastating to decks in the
current meta. It's a good splashable
option for Level 7 decks and it's a must-have for a
Red-Eyes deck, but to be honest, the Red-Eyes hype
is a bit overblown.
