Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz

If you Ritual Summon exactly 1 "Nekroz" Ritual Monster with a card effect that requires use of monsters, this card can be used as the entire requirement. If this card is Tributed by a card effect: You can add 1 Warrior-Type "Nekroz" Ritual Monster from your Deck to your hand. You can only use this effect of "Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz" once per turn.

Initially, I was confused on this decision and surprised they didn't ban Nekroz of Trishula instead.  However, looking at ARG's custom format, however, Nekroz were dominating most of the competition even without Trishula.  So, Konami called it right on this one.  Let Nekroz keep their powerhouses, but don't allow them to be summoned for free.  Even with Shurit at 1, it was still searchable, recoverable, and it not only gave you a Ritual monster for free, but it also plussed the player when it searched.  Good riddance.

After a day off, we're treating you to a Two-for-Tuesday! Our second card today is Shurit Strategist of the Nekroz.  This guy got Banned as well, and this one really hurt you Nekroz players.  Level 3, Water, Warrior, not meant for attacking at 300 points but a nice sound 1800 defense.  For what should be an obvious reason, the Ban of this card is appropriate.  If you Ritual Summon one Nekroz using Monsters (yes there are other ways, just others can cost much more than this card) this card counts as the entire requirement.  Even if you don't use it to Ritual Summon, you can Tribute it to bring a Nekroz Ritual from the Deck to your Hand.  Just a phenomenal card for a very good, very fast, Deck.

This week is ban list week, and I have to say it was a very good one. For the most part the powers that be nailed every deck that needed a change to ensure fiarness. Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz's ban continues (and likely caps) the fall of Nekroz.

Searchable by most "Nekroz" monsters, as well as RoTA, Shurit allowed the Nekroz deck to really swarm. His searchablility allowed him to tower over all other WATER monsters that could be used as an entire tribute for a Ritual Summon. Then you got the added bonus of having Shurit himself be a seracher off of being tributed, which continued the circle that was Nekroz. Tribute Shurit in the hand with Cycle for a Ritural Summon, get a Nekroz Warrior-Type from the deck, remove him from the grave with Mirror for another Ritual Summon, it was a deadly loop. He also was a great combo with Nekroz of Valkyrus to get a +1 off of Valkyrus's effect. Shurit needed to be dealt with to halt Nekroz's grip on the meta.

Bye Bye Nekroz. I won't miss your overwhelming price tag and power. Shurit is the mvp of the deck. He made every single Nekroz Ritual Monster easy to Special Summon. Then, once a turn, he would get you a free Warrior Nekroz Ritual Monster to your hand. Just for being tributed! Nekroz ran 3 when they could run 3, 1 when they could only run 1, and now they have to actually try to get Trishula out without him in the deck at all. Or just abandon the deck because it's dead. Banhammer kills another deck.

I always love banlist week; it’s a great time to look over the changes and see how they affect the metagame. The list this time around made some massive changes, and the game we have now is really quite different from the game we had just a few weeks ago.

Shurit, Strategist of the Nekroz was a key piece to the Nekroz strategy, but it wasn’t the card that I was expecting to get banned. I anticipated Limits on both Brionac and Unicore, but if any Nekroz card was going to get banned, I was expecting Trishula.

However, Shurit was a much smarter choice in terms of nerfing the power of the Deck, because of how much he did for it. Being not only search fodder, but also a way to easily summon any Nekroz monster for practically no investment is what allowed the Deck to remain so powerful even after a wide array of hits. There isn’t really a card that can replace Shurit, and the Deck’s consistency took a massive blow with his loss.

Aw yeah, Desu-Desu bitches!” -Jaden, YGO Abridged series

As a whole, I both admire and despise the Nekroz theme. I admire its beautiful artwork and the fact that it's built around a mostly underrated strategy (Rituals), while at the same time I hate that it's so easy to summon power houses and overwhelm your opponent here. (That, for the most part, is thanks to the added Pendulumn Monsters.) Don't get me wrong, I like a challenge; but Nekroz is- in my honest opinion- a bit broken and unfair to the average player. How so? Well, just look at THIS guy.

Shurit may be weak in ATK and DEF, but nobody played him for his stats. They played him for his effect: he alone can be the summoning requirement for a Ritual Nekroz Monster, and if tributed for something, he has his own Reinforcement of the Army effect for Nekroz. We'll get to ROTA later... (*shivers*) But the bottom line here is, Shurit is... or rather WAS... a force to be reckoned with, even for beginner Nekroz players. Now that he's banned, the theme as a whole suffers, but it's at least not as broken as before.

Final Score: 5/5 (Nekroz only)
