Red Wyvern
- #HSRD-EN022 1 Tuner + 1 or more non-Tuner monsters
During either player's turn, if a monster with higher ATK than this Synchro Summoned card is on the field: You can destroy the 1 face-up monster on the field that has the highest ATK (your choice, if tied). This effect can only be used once while this card is face-up on the field.

Red Wyvern
Red by The 69 Eyes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_CiNodIy3Y
(Concluding with a rock ballad from one of my
favorite Finnish goth bands)
A decent 2400-ATK
beater which can provide an out to a number of
powerful monsters. You're spending 2 cards on
a Beast of Talwar and a Smashing Ground (or Hammer
Shot) to be precise. There's better and even
easier to use removal options out there, but it can
be helpful in certain situations. The
restrictions of the effect working only once and
only if it's Synchro Summoned hinder it more than
they prevent abuse. Not a bad card when all's
said and done. Just not noteworthy either.

Not technically a member of the Red Dragon
Archfiend family but still a Red Dragon Synchro
Monster. Level 6 Synchro, 2400 attack and 1500
defense, and Synchro Summoned with a Tuner and one
or more non-Tuner Monsters, so it's simple enough
from the onset. So once a turn during either
players' turn, you can destroy a Synchro Summoned
card with the highest attack. Fantastic,
except you're not very likely to run into a Synchro
Monster which makes that pretty moot in the current
environment. Said effect can only be used once
while this card is face-up on the Field. He's
not bad, just that effect won't get used much.
If Synchros start coming back into the game, I'd use
him. He's quick, strong enough for his Level,
and well supported being a Dragon.

Red week concludes with one of the lesser
impressive cards, Red Wyvern. There are better Level
6 Synchro monsters to Special Summon than this
monster. Standard ATK for a Level 6 leaves it
lacking compared to Goyo Guardian. Destroying a
higher ATK monster your opponent controls, good,
ability to do it on either turn, great. The
problem lies within its restriction. A one-time kill
isn't good enough. Only being able to use the effect
if Wyvern was Synchro Summoned lowers the
playability more. After the effect is used, this
card becomes a defenseless 2400ATK monster.
There's better Level 6 Synchro monsters to use. Use
them instead.

Red Wyvern. Even the name disappoints me. It
should be Red Wyvern Archfiend, or something. It's
ok but it is not the combo starter that I
wished/thought it was going to be. I blame the
stats. Red Wyvern is a Level 6 Fire Dragon-type
Synchro Monster with 2400 Atk and 2000 Def.
Normally, that would be good enough for a good
score. But since it is Fire instead of Dark it
becomes useless as an option for the new Hot RDAs
that came out. Furthermore, The name not including
RDA means that it is not a target for some of the
Hot RDAs' effects.
There is a good effect on Red Wyvern, but you can
only use it once while it is Face-up on your side of
the field. You can use it during either player's
turn, but unless I can somehow summon this
consistently during the opponent's turn, I'd rather
have been able to do it once per turn and only on my
turn. Anyway, the effect is basically just a single
target boss killer. After Red Wyvern is Synchro
Summoned if there is a monster with higher Atk than
this card on the field, you can target the highest
Atk target and destroy it. I am glad that there is
no cost, but there are way easier ways to get rid of
a big monster. You don't even get to pick which
monster to destroy if there are multiple monsters
with greater than Red Wyvern's Atk. I would score it
higher if I could at least use it after a Soul
Charge or Call of the Haunted, but it is after
Synchro Summon only. Just meh. Great looking meh.
Score: 2/5 Why did this have to be Fire?
Art: 5/5 I still love how it looks.

Rounding up the week is a dragon that can not only
work with the Hot-red theme, but can also
potentially defeat it on the opposing end. Meet Red
Wyvern, the smaller but still firey dragon synchro.
At just 2400-ATK and 2000-DEF, he has more in common
with Red-Eyes than Hot-Red. But wait, there's more!
He can instantly nuke a monster on the field whose
ATK is higher than his, which really balances him
out. If you're not a fan of the Hot-Red family, but
still want a synchro dragon that would be utilized
against high-ATK monsters, then this is the way to
go. Give him a test drive and see for yourself, if
you can stand the heat.
Final Score: 5/5- Dragon and Synchro decks in
general are recommended. |
