Daily Since 2002!

Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju
- #CORE-EN088

You can Special Summon this card (from your hand) to your opponent's side of the field in Attack Position, by Tributing 1 monster they control. If your opponent controls a "Kaiju" monster, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand) in Attack Position. You can only control 1 "Kaiju" monster. When your opponent Normal or Special Summons a monster(s): You can remove 2 Kaiju Counters from anywhere on the field; until the end of the next turn, that monster(s) cannot attack and its effects are negated.

So we're reviewing some leftover card from Clash of Rebellions today. Kumongous, the Sticky String Kaiju is a Level 7 Earth Insect-type monster with 2400 Atk and 2500 Def. All of the is bad for a Level 7 monster. I haven't done any research on the Kaijus, so I don't know if this is the boss or just a mid monster. In any case, This monster has some effects and some restrictions that are somewhat ok.

The first effect is to Special Summon this monster from your hand to your opponent's side of the field in attack position by tributing one of their monsters. This is good because you are not giving them a beater, and unless they run a lot of Level 7 monsters, it's not going to be and XYZ material. It's probably not going to be a Synchro material monster either. It could be a fusion target for Shaddolls, but that's situational. The restriction is not so great in a Kaiju deck because you can only control 1. That means your opponent as well, so you couldn't swarm their field with this thing by tributing their monsters.

The second effect is good. You can Special Summon Kumongous if your opponent controls a Kaiju monster. So use the first effect and then use this effect. It's a good way to get an easy Level 7 monster on the field. You're giving up two of this card to tribute one of their monsters. However, the third effect will end up benefiting the opponent. It states that when your opponent Normal or Special Summons a monster, you can remove 2 Kaiju counters from anywhere on the field and Fiendish Chain that monster until the end of the next turn. So assuming you have some Field Spell that has your counters, when you give this monster to your opponent, they can use those counters as many times as they want to negate your monsters' effects. It doesn't even need to stay on the field. Risky Risky Risky.

Score: 2/5 I might be missing something, but I'd still avoid this.

Art: 3.5/ Spiders are cool.

Wait, wait, wait.... You mean to tell me it took nearly TWENTY YEARS for the YGO card series to get Kaiju monsters????? May Godzilla have mercy on Konami's soul.

Anyways, I like how the effects of this and the other Kaiju in this set basically set the stage so that you and your opponent can duke it out Kaiju style: you force him to Tribute his monster for either this or its counterpart, then Special Summon one (preferrably Dogoran) to your field. This is good because it gets rid of a monster that might have been hard to kill, like Stardust Dragon for example (he won't get his effect, since it's only triggered when he would have been destroyed). Then with Dogoran's higher ATK, you will dominate the battlefield.

Its second effect, which negates monster effects and keeps them from attacking, requires two Kaiju Counters. That's the trickier part of the strategy, as there are (so far) only three Kaiju themed cards to work with. So for now, if you really want to give it a go, feed your opponent this sticky spider, then have your 'Zilla steamroll it. Otherwise, just wait for the theme to get better support.

Final Score: 2/5, the weaker of the Kaiju (thus far)
