Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Day
Daily Since 2002!

The Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix - #MIL-EN001

Cannot be Normal Summoned/Set. Must be Special Summoned by its own effect, and cannot be Special Summoned by other ways. If "The Winged Dragon of Ra" is sent from the field to your Graveyard while this card is in your Graveyard: Special Summon this card. Cards and effects cannot be activated in response to this effect's activation. This card is unaffected by other cards' effects. You can pay 1000 LP; send 1 monster on the field to the Graveyard. Once per turn, during the End Phase: Send this card to the Graveyard, and if you do, Special Summon 1 "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard, ignoring its Summoning conditions.

Card Rating
Advanced: 4

So the Divine Ra deck got stronger. Somehow I don't think anyone cares. The Winged Dragon of Ra - Immortal Phoenix is a Level 10 Divine Divine-Beast type monster with 4000 Atk and 4000 Def. These stats are absurdly huge. It's nice to know that obscenely high Atk can be achieved naturally instead of the '?' Atk of some of the other Divine monsters. Immortal Phoenix almost has the potential to be the best Divine monster, but one part of its effect comes up short.

All the Ra monsters say different restrictions that can apparently be ignored. Immortal Phoenix cannot be Normal Summoned or Set and can only be Special Summoned from the grave when regular Ra is sent from the field to the grave. Fortunately, cards and effects can't be activated when this happens. Immortal Phoenix isn't affected by anything else, from either player. Honestly, that's all this card needed to be great. In addition to that near-perfect protection, Immortal Phoenix can send 1 monster from the field to the grave as many times as you want at the cost of 1000 Life Points. That effect doesn't target or destroy, so those monsters are going to the grave almost guaranteeing a direct attack for half your opponent's life points. Then there's the bad news. Immortal Phoenix sends itself to the grave during the End Phase and allows you to Special Summon Ra Sphere Mode from your hand, Deck, or Graveyard. Sphere Mode does say it can't be Special Summoned, but Immortal Phoenix ignores that Summoning Condition. In any case, these Ra's can loop so long as they don't get banished, but it's way too risky to ever pull off consistently. Now if it could avoid Kaiju's and Stormforth, Immortal Phoenix would be much better. It's ironic that the immortality doesn't protect it from itself.

Score: 4/5 If you can do it, you should win.
Art: 4/5 Immortal and Phoenix are oxymorons.

Hello Pojo Fans,

The final form of Ra hit TCG recently, and it gives much-needed aid to using the least used of the Egyptian Gods. Immortal Phoenix has been wanted since it appeared in the show.

Have this card in the grave when "The Winged Dragon of Ra" is sent from the field to your Graveyard to Special Summon it. If you can copy “The Winged Dragon of Ra” with a monster that will aid in your summoning of this card. Your opponent being unable to activate anything in response, a good trade for the setup for this cards summoning. Unaffected by other cards' effects, more playability added at this point. You can trade 1000 Life Points to send a monster to the grave. Key word: send, not destroy. That one word is going to get around several monsters that require destruction to activate their effects. Any monster gives you the option to get monsters into the graveyard to activate their effects or set up other moves as well. The final effect allows you to ignore restrictions and summon "The Winged Dragon of Ra - Sphere Mode" from your hand, deck or grave at the End Phase of the turn. You have the option, you don't need to. Ability to pull a high ATK monster out to the field from 3 out of 4 places it could be is a great effect. Sphere Mode can tribute itself to pull the original Ra out from the hand or deck and give it the same ATK/DEF as Sphere Mode.

Immortal Phoenix lives up to its name, and if you are running a dedicated deck to The Winged Dragon of Ra it is a must. In terms of Egyptian Gods though, Slifer and Obelisk don't require loopholes or an investment in setup like Ra may need.  As a card in terms of effects, it is great: protection from anything, summon can't be negated, setup for the summoning easy, monster removal ability, high ATK/DEF, and can replace itself with an equally competent monster. I use those facts to give it this rating, otherwise it would be a 1/5 as it can only be used in a Ra-specific deck.
