#7 - Pantheism of the Monarchs
-
SR01-EN023
Send 1 "Monarch" Spell/Trap Card from your hand to the Graveyard; draw 2 cards. You can banish this card from your Graveyard; reveal 3 "Monarch" Spell/Trap Cards from your Deck, your opponent chooses 1 for you to add to your hand, and you shuffle the rest back into your Deck. You can only use this effect of "Pantheism of the Monarchs" once per turn.

I am shocked that Pantheism of the Monarchs only
came in at #7 on the Top 10 list. Coming in at #3 on
my list, I thought it was patently obvious how
broken this card was. People are currently going
gonzo for a card that lets you draw 2 from your deck
at the cost of 10 banished and unrecoverable cards.
So how is this spell not higher?
Monarchs ruled multiple formats in 2016 with
variations of itself that were dominant from
evolution to evolution. Brilliant Monarchs, Domain
Monarchs, Extra Deck Monarchs, Speedroid Monarchs,
Quantum Monarchs. All of these could be found
regularly in top 8’s of major tournaments around the
world. And they all had one thing in common: 3
Pantheism of the Monarchs. It was the cornerstone of
the archetype, the consistency Monarchs so
desperately needed after tribute summoning went the
way of the dodo, or should I say, the Jinzo. An
argument could sometimes even be made for having
less than 3 copies of The Monarchs Stormforth, but
not Pantheism. It would have been like not including
Graceful Charity in a Dark World deck.
I fully understand that without monsters like Ehther,
we wouldn’t be discussing Pantheism. And I never
even played Monarchs (at least not in the current
generation. I loved me some old-school Frog
Monarchs.) but I know what bread and butter looks
like. Pantheism of the Monarchs is as broken as they
come. It was made to elevate Monarchs to elite
status again, and it did its job well. Expect this
not to be unrestricted for a long time, folks.

Pantheism is the belief that god is everything
that exists and we're part of it. I'm not sure
what that has to do with Monarchs. Are these
long-used Monarch monsters religious figures?
Does pantheism even have prophets and clergy to
begin with?
Anyway, I consider this kind of a spam card.
It has the generic Destiny Draw effect of discard 1
and draw 2. It's already, at the very least,
revenue-neutral. Considering that you'd be
dumping a card you don't need (or a card you could
use in the graveyard), it's cost isn't really much
of a cost at all.
Its graveyard effect, being a cross between a
Painful Choice and Pot of Duality, makes it a +1.
And since you're able to select 2 or 3 of the same
card, it's only glibly a choice for the opponent.
It added consistency to Monarchs, powering them up
to be a tier 1 deck. It was a 3-of staple
until it rightly got limited.
I'm all for decks having consistency, but this was
designed to be a generic skill-less +1 draw/search
card. Nonetheless, it's great.

I think we can all agree why this card made the
number 7 spot. Generating advantage twice per turn
was crucial for Monarchs this year. Can you believe
Pantheism of the Monarchs has not been reviewed
before? Anyway, this Normal Spell could draw 2 cards
and then search the deck by being banished from the
grave. It was thought to be balanced because the
search effect was only once per turn and couldn't be
used during the End Game. But that draw power was
immense because one of the vassals can return
banished Monarch cards to the hand. Pantheism of the
Monarchs was played at 3 in all variants of Monarchs
so earns a spot on the list representing the entire
deck. Sadly, with it and a number of other Monarchs
limited, the deck as a whole has seen significantly
reduced play. Maybe some of it will come back next
year? One can dream.

We continue our Top 10 of 2016 Countdown. Just
when you think they couldn’t make draw 2 cards any
better, they went and made the #7 card: Pantheism of
the Monarchs!
Position on my list: #7 (oh, well would you look at
that!)
Monarchs were already one of my favorite Decks;
Macro Monarch was the second competitive Deck I ever
made, and before Lightsworn it was the one I played
longest, so it has a special place in my heart. When
I heard they were making Monarch support, I was
super excited before I learned that Domain made the
Deck effectively a new era of Qliphort/Evilswarm
strategies, and my hype deflated.
And then Extra Deck Monarch emerged, and once again
I found another Deck I’d put within my Top 10
favorite Decks in the history of the game. With the
sheer amount of power plays and options the Deck had
on both players turns, and as a result how high the
Deck’s ceiling was, it felt like I was playing a new
age of Dragon Rulers.
Pantheism was one of the reasons the Deck had such a
high ceiling. It accelerated the Deck by loading the
Graveyard with Monarch Spells/Traps, and gave it the
consistency it so very much needed through both that
draw power and its search ability. It was really
just too strong for what it did, being a free +1 on
top of the other +2’s the Deck made with Ehther and
Erebus. It’s a shame that it had to go down in order
to keep the Deck in check, because it severely
harmed the Deck’s consistency as a result.
I think you could make an argument of keeping
Pantheism legal for the sake of consistency and
knocking down other power cards like The Prime
Monarch, but that’s a debate for another time.
Regardless, Pantheism is one of the best draw cards
of the year.
But not the best (hinthint).

At number 7 we have here our one and only entry
into the Top 10 regarding Monarchs.
During the reign and reign of Monarchs, Pantheism
helped to create so much consistency that not only
"Domain" Monarchs were viable, but also, Extra Deck
Monarchs. Opening with, or dumping to the Graveyard
first turn with Pantheism ensured that Monarchs
could always +1 each and every turn once this was
removed from the Deck, and this fact alone made
Monarchs an extremely successful Deck, and mostly
due to the fact that consistency does equate to real
power.
However, at times Pantheism could actually serve to
hinder the player, and this generally would come
about due to the player chasing the continuous Plus/
Draw ability of Pantheism rather than grabbing a
card that would better serve the situation at hand.
In many ways, oddly, I feel that the Limitation of
Pantheism of the Monarchs has actually helped
players to see the benefit(s) of using other cards
in order to achieve the same directive(s), sadly for
Monarchs though they have slipped mostly off of the
competitive radar, the combination of several hits
as well as a newer Meta has significantly damaged
them.
Personally I feel that Ehther should have been in
the Top 10 due to its impact upon the game this
year, however due to the fact that I did not vote
upon the Pojo Top 10 for this year, this card is
still a very valid choice.
Generally while playing Monarchs I tended to find
that those that did not play Monarchs feared
Pantheism far more than they did Ehther, even though
the benefits of Ehther to the Monarch Deck were far
larger and more varied.
Rating: 4.6. When a card can generate a +1 with
little effort (from the Graveyard), is searchable
and can speed through the Deck considerably quicker
without hurting Deck consistency in many cases, its
little wonder that Monarch players wanted to get
this into their Hand or at least Graveyard first
turn... The only downside is the necessity for a
discard as well as the fact that when choosing the 3
cards, you cannot always guarantee what card you
will get, because of this it loses some score.
Regardless, one of the best Archetype (Monarchs)
type cards ever made.

#7 Pantheism of the Monarchs is a simple,
yet excellent Magic card. Great support for a
theme too. Any card that says "Draw 2 cards"
is worth looking at, even Deck specific ones.
You send a Monarch Magic/Trap card from your Hand to
the Graveyard, along with this, to Draw 2 cards.
You break even, but you're still getting two new
cards. But additionally, you can remove this
card from the Graveyard from play, to choose three
Monarch Magic/Trap cards from your Deck. Your
opponent chooses one to add to your Hand, and the
others return to your Deck, and is shuffled.
That's another breakeven, you lose this card, but
get one from the Deck. The shuffle aspect can
work in your favor too I suppose.
