#5 - The Phantom Knights of Break Sword
2 Level 3 monsters
Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card, then target 1 card you control and 1 card your opponent controls; destroy them. If this Xyz Summoned card is destroyed: You can target 2 "The Phantom Knights" monsters with the same Level in your Graveyard; Special Summon them and increase their Levels by 1, also you cannot Special Summon monsters for the rest of this turn, except DARK monsters.

We are now down to our Top 5 of the Top 10 Cards
of 2016. Our #5 card is The Phantom Knights of Break
Sword!
Position on my list: #5 (ayy)
This is, in my opinion, the best Rank 3 monster in
the game, and probably the main reason Rank 3
monsters are once again back in the limelight. A
Scrap Dragon for Rank 3’s is very strong as it is,
but Break Sword’s alternate effect that lets you
make DARK Rank 4’s in a Phantom Knights Deck makes
its utility even better.
The Deck that made the most of Break Sword was
obviously Phantom Knight Burning Abyss (or BAPK or
PK Fire, whatever you prefer), but the card is just
so generically good that practically any Deck that
can easily make Rank 3’s will probably be playing
it. Metalfoes also commonly plays it, for example,
due to the vast amount of Level 3 monsters the Deck
runs.
This is a card that will remain relevant as long as
Rank 3’s remain relevant, or until something comes
out that completely outclasses it.

Is number 5 yet another Top Ten Card that hasn't
been reviewed before? The Phantom Knights of Break
Sword is a Rank 3 Dark Warrior-type XYZ Monster with
2000 Atk and 1000 Def. It's strong enough for Rank
3, and it has the ability to bring forth materials
in the grave to make a Rank 4 XYZ monster after it
has been destroyed. The only real downside to Break
Sword is that its first effect targets for
destruction a card on your side and a card on the
opponent's side.
The archetype in general is very ready to fit into
other decks. Obviously Burning Abyss and Phantom
Knights have been friends since Phantom Knights were
released. Giving Burning Abyss easy access to
removal, besides Farfa, really strengthened the
deck. I may not have had this card on my list, but I
can see why The Phantom Knights of Break Sword is a
Top Ten Card.

Monday
Happy post Christmas everyone, we continue our
countdown and move into the second half, at #5, with
The Phantom Knights of Break Sword. Rank 3
(XYZ Summoned with two Level 3 Monsters) Dark,
Warrior, 2000 attack, and 1400 defense. This
card obviously works best in it's theme, but the
destruction effect is fun, and asset to many other
Decks also. Plenty of Decks gain advantage by
destroying, even their own cards. The 2000
attack is a bit low, but not necessarily so for a
generic Rank 3. If destroyed (having been XYZ
Summoned first) you Target and Special Summon two
Phantom Knight Monsters of the same Level from your
Graveyard, and they have their Levels increased by
1. You're conformed to only Special Summon
Dark Monsters for the rest of the turn, but that
only further plays into your Hand. Honestly,
you might end up just bringing him out, using his
first effect, destroy this, and then XYZ something
better anyway. He's fun and great support for
a theme.
