Pojo's Yu-Gi-Oh! Card of the Day
Daily Since 2002!

Ebon Illusion Magician
- #SHVI-ENSE1

2 Level 7 monsters You can also Xyz Summon this card by using a Rank 6 Spellcaster-Type Xyz Monster you control as the Xyz Material. (Xyz Materials attached to that monster also become Xyz Materials on this card.) Once per turn: You can detach 1 Xyz Material from this card; Special Summon 1 Spellcaster-Type Normal Monster from your hand or Deck. When a Spellcaster-Type Normal Monster declares an attack: You can target 1 card your opponent controls; banish it. You can only use this effect of "Ebon Illusion Magician" once per turn.

Ebon Illusion Magician

Ebon is an interesting monster indeed to review. He was solely and unequivocally created for the Dark Magician. And he is most definitely the premiere extra deck monster to bring out with Dark Magicians. With all the new support, Ebon is quite easy to summon since getting any combination of Dark Magician, Mahad, or Magician of Dark Illusion is a cake walk. However that does not mean he has to only be relegated to just one deck, especially in the future.

Ebon has a number of positive attributes. First off, he’s a generic XYZ, which is extremely unusual for Spellcasters. Of all the monsters types in the game, Spellcaster Synchro and XYZ monsters are the hardest to summon because they have the highest concentration of non-generic monsters. The good ones usually require spellcasters as material. But Ebon only needs 2 level 7 monsters. Now, his subsequent effects refer to spellcasters, but we’ll get back to that in a bit. Second, he doesn’t specifically refer to Dark Magician, even though he’s a Dark Magician support card in every conceivable way. This is important because he can get any level monster. Unfortunately, there isn’t a wind type level 4 normal spellcaster in the game, because I would have loved to try using Ebon in harpy decks. But this is just an example of possible future potential.

His banishing effect doesn’t need embellishment. It’s amazing in Dark Magician decks, especially when Dark Magic Circle is out. But his middle effect to be able to XYZ over a rank 6 spellcaster XYZ is strange. Currently there’s only two in the entire game: Magi Magi Magician Girl and Norito the Moral Leader. And if you’re playing a deck that runs either of those two monsters, you’re almost assuredly not capable of including normal spellcasters in your deck. I really can’t even fathom why this effect was included. But, it’s an additional effect and that’s always welcome. Overall, Ebon is a solid monster that will be a staple in Dark Magician decks that are getting a ton of support and probably even more in the future.

Advanced: 4/5 (when Dark Magician support is released)

Future Potential: 3.5/5

Baneful

With the alternative summoning requirement, it makes use of Dark Magician Girl, or an actually decent LV6 like a Chaos Sorcerer that just activated its effect.  It can bring out a Dark Magician from your deck, to give you two very strong beaters.  And you even get to banish a card your opponent controls, which is really helpful for dealing with Pendulum builds (so the Pendulums don't return back to the Extra Deck), or against any deck, really.

Since this is an Extra Deck card, and it's one that's a staple in its deck type, this card suffers from no draw probability issues and won't take away Extra Deck space from more important cards ; as a result, I'm awarding this card a high score.

4.5/5

Hello Pojo Fans,

Dark Magician support is on the horizon and I, along with countless others are pumped! Ebon Illusion Magician fits in with the upcoming support.

Rank 7, DARK, Spellcaster, good ATK/DEF. Having an easier way of Xyz Summoning in addition to the traditional way is always good, a Rank 6 Spellcaster Xyz may be easier to come by. Trade a material for a Normal Spellcaster from the hand or deck will thin your deck in addition to giving you another monster to use. While you could go from your hand, you will likely always take from the deck.

Banishment of a card when a Normal Spellcaster attacks is incredible. Big monsters don't stand a chance, walls will fall, any card on your opponents field isn't safe from Ebon. Attack, then banish the monster you are attacking with a Normal Spellcaster, making it into a direct attack. Pendulum Monsters are targets to deal with without destroying them and potentially activating effects.

Once the support comes, Ebon will be seeing a lot of play.

Dark Magician gets some help with this card first released 2 years ago. Ebon Illusion Magician is a Rank 7 Dark Spellcaster-type XYZ monster with 2500 Atk and 2100 Def. Why? Why can't we have nice things? 2700 Atk would have been at least some improvement. For the investment of 2 Level 7 monsters to Special Summon this, there should be more bang for the buck. As it is he does nothing for himself, but a good amount for Dark Magician, the only Level 7 Spellcaster Normal Monster that matters.

There is an alternate way to get Ebon Illusion Magician onto the field legitimately. You can XYZ Summon him on top of a Rank 6 Spellcaster-type XYZ monster you control. Unfortunately, there are not very many of those to chose. But, more options are still nice to have. The only effect that costs 1 material can also only be activated once per turn. Unless you have more than one Ebon Illusion Magician with XYZ material, you can Special Summon 1 Level 7 or lower Spellcaster-type Normal monster from your Hand or Deck. I'm glad they didn't specify Dark Magician, but that's still the only real target you'll be getting. If it had said graveyard, Gemini monsters would be viable targets, but sadly no. The last effect targets an opponent's monster after a Spellcaster-type Normal monster declares an attack. You can banish the opponent's monster. You can only do that once per turn no matter how many Ebon Illusion Magician's you have on the field. I wish it didn't target, but banishing is better than destroying against most decks. This card has a lot of 'almost's. It's almost strong enough. The effects are almost boss monster worthy. So it almost gets a great score.

Score: 3/5 More potential later this year.
Art: 4/5 He seems very active in this picture.
