Hello Pojo Fans,

Icarus Attack has been a CoTD before, but keep resurfacing as the game changes and limitations happen.

Simple to use: 2-for-2 potential for Winged-Beast users. You lose a winged beast but destroy two cards your opponent has, and that can be any of their cards. With Pendulum Monsters very high right now, a Winged-Beast user (Blackwings, Gladiator Beasts) could use a set Icarus Attack to halt their opponents combos. Your winged-beast allowed to be face-down when activating Icarus Attack prevents you from being hit by cards like Bottomless, Warning, or Torrential. The flexibility to choose monster and spell/trap is great to get around monsters who cannot be targeted by spell/trap cards. You may also target cards you control to start combos, gain resources, or clear up field space for new cards. Icarus Attack can hit any card on the field the activating player selects, and even if that card is activated (face-down spell/trap) you will still get the effect of Icarus Attack.

Winged-Beasts may have fallen off, but Icarus Attack is still a great card to use if you have a few Winged-Beasts in your deck.

Icarus Attack is a Normal Trap that destroys 2 cards on the Field. This trap has a cost and a condition in that you have to tribute a Winged-Beast type monster (either face-up or face-down) and there have to be 2 other cards on the field. Then you can destroy those targeted cards. Targeted destruction isn't as good as it used to be. However easily chainable traps are what make Burning Abyss decks work, so this has a chance. Icarus Attack gets extra points for being useful in any deck that runs Winged-Beasts including Harpies, Blackwings, and Raidraptors. If any of those monsters have Graveyard effects, then you will probably plus in advantage. Finally, this can target your own Pendulum Scales to send them to the Extra Deck and possibly trigger more effects. The only thing slowing this down is that it is a trap that can be destroyed before you can get a Winged-Beast on the field.

We continue with "Wing Raiders" this week, as we shift our attention to the real stars of the set: the Raidraptors. First up is an oldie but a goodie, Icarus Attack.

(For those of you who don't know, the Monster on the card art is Swift Birdman Joe, who sadly never got to be tourney-worthy, as his stats and effect are sub-par. It's almost as though this card is Konami's way of apologizing for him.)

This card is, by no means, a Tier 1 card unless you're playing a ton of Winged Beasts. And if you are, then you basically have three theme options: Harpie, Blackwing, and Raidraptor. But boy does it payoff; you're nuking not one, but two opposing cards, and they can either be Monster, Spell, Trap, or Pendulum! The downside is sacrificing a Winged Beast on your field, but that's unless your strategy involves bouncing monsters back onto the field from the grave (Hysteric Party, anyone?) And hey, even if grave bounce isn't your game, this is still a decent card in the right deck. I highly recommend it for beginners who want to splash a bird or two... Or three.. Or a dozen.

Score: 4/5, Winged-Beast themed decks only; trash everywhere else

Baneful

With setups getting more involved with Pendulums, traps like Solemn Striking and intricate combos, a reactive disruptive card like Icarus Attack is once again appreciated.  Seeing cards like Twin Twister gaining play again gives me some hope for Icarus Attack.  It's a niche card that works for Winged-Beasts only.  Of course, you probably don't want to run 3 of this card because it's not good in general to run too many cards that depend on other cards, but it's a 2 for 2 that might be a +1 when chained an opponent's removal card or combo.  I don't think any of the Winged-Beast decks are tier 1, though Raidraptors are getting some good support, so we'll see what happens.  Every deck with an ample supply of Winged-Beast monsters should run 1 or 2 copies of Icarus Attack (or at least consider putting it in their deck).
