We continue our second banlist week with what is
possibly my least favorite change to the list
(though not for the reason you may think): Emergency
Teleport, which is now Semi-Limited.
This card is no stranger to the banlist. It first
was Limited in March 2009 after being a major player
in the infamous TeleDAD Deck, summoning Krebons to
compliment Destiny HERO – Malicious and make any
Level 8 Synchro. After that, Emergency Teleport saw
some use, but not nearly as much as it had in the
past, and it eventually was Unlimited once more. It
would occasionally see some use but never anything
spectacular.
And then they made Kozmo, and suddenly Emergency
Teleport was one of the strongest cards in the game
again. Within Kozmo, you can summon Kozmo Farmgirl
in the Battle Phase after your opponent has had
their board cleared, and push for even more damage
(up to 4500 if you search Dark Destroyer, and that
isn’t even considering the possibility of using
Destroyer to pop one of your ships that already
attacked). On the first turn, you could instead
search for Kozmo Tincan, get a search with him, and
then tag him out before he gets banished by
Emergency Teleport.
Emergency Teleport also sees use in Monarch Decks
that make use of the Super Quantum engine. Special
Summoning Blue Layer lets you immediately search Red
Layer, and you can then use the Blue Layer as
Tribute fodder (whether it’s for Red Layer or a
Monarch), and since Blue Layer returns herself to
the Deck, you can run multiple copies of Emergency
Teleport while only running one Blue Layer.
Some players also use Emergency Teleport to summon
Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, as she’s a Level 3 Psychic
Tuner that also has a decent effect if drawn.
I did say that this was possibly my least favorite
change on the banlist, and the reason for that is
because I actually think this card should have been
Limited. While it does provide consistency for Decks
like Kozmo and Quantum Monarch, it also tends to be
one of the sackiest cards in Kozmo. The sheer amount
of damage you can put on the board off of a single
Emergency Teleport thanks to Farmgirl and Dark
Destroyer is outright ridiculous. I have seen games
where someone had complete control over their
opponent only for the opponent to draw Emergency
Teleport and turn the entire game around. Likewise,
I’ve also seen boards that are otherwise tame turn
into lethal damage because of Emergency Teleport.
Semi-Limiting this card did practically nothing, and
was a very blatant slap on the wrist.
While I do think there are other more problematic
cards in Kozmo (mainly Dark Destroyer), I do feel
like in the current gamestate, Emergency Teleport is
far too strong of a momentum swinger. In an ideal
game, I really don’t think this card is a problem,
but as it currently is, getting a free Level 3 or
lower Psychic from your Deck is a little too
powerful.
