Wall Week continues with Wall of Illusion, a card I
remember getting out of Starter Deck: Yugi on
Christmas day
fourteen years ago.
This monster sports a rather beefy 1850 DEF, and
upon being attacked returns the attacker to hand. As
a fun fact, this is the only card to ever have
“creature” in its card text in place of “monster”,
back when it was first printed. I guess a little bit
of Magic: The Gathering leaked over during
translation.
For its time, I could see Wall of Illusion actually
being a rather competent card, as not only did it
have a solid DEF, it also had a rather potent effect
(during a time where monster effects in general were
uncommon). It eventually got outclassed by Legendary
Jujitsu Master, which has 50 less DEF but also
returned the attacking monster to the top of the
Deck instead of the hand. These days, neither are
particularly useful.

Wall of Illusion
Day 3 of Trump Wall week.
This card was effectively made obsolete by Legendary
Jujitsu Master (who, at slightly less DEF points
bounces to the deck - not to the hand), and we're
not even using him today. At it's time of
release, it was an amazing card. One could
either have a 2000 DEF wall with no effect or an
1850 DEF wall with an ability that detracts from
field advantage. Plus, it punished tributed
monster. Okay, Wall of Illusion sucks now, but
how would it fare for border protection?
Actually, if people are trapped in their illusions
and can't get through to the other side of the
border, it would be pretty effect. Too bad
it's a children's card game fantasy. Sorry,
Donald.

Hello Pojo Fans,
More walls, and this one is an oldie: Wall of
Illusion.
Back in the day this was a reliable monster with
strong defense in terms of attacking monsters
popular in the game, with an effect that could be
used more than once. Now though it has drastically
fallen out of favor in terms of playability for
better monsters. Penguin Soldier sends back 2
monsters off of flipping, which make it a better
monster than Wall of Illusion, even if WoI could
survive an attack and send a monster back.
Now-a-days 1850DEF won't hold up against much, but
it is a DARK Fiend, which lends it good support.
It's fun to look back and see what was so good and
if it could still hold up in todays game. There are
very few cards that can do that though that weren't
staples in almost every deck.

Wall of Illusion
I kind of wish we were reviewing better “wall” cards
this week than this. There’s a number of better ones
out there than this. Now, that’s not to say this
monster is horrific. It saw the light of day once
upon a time. And I always pay attention to cards
that benefit from opponent attacks, because if the
day ever comes where Konami makes a legit theme
based on forcing opponents to attack, I’d love to
see players throw cards together like Wall of
Illusion, the Magician Girls, Cross Counter, etc.
with high defense monsters and create something
scary.
This card was reviewed on pojo in 2002. Go read the
reviews. If they don’t make you smile, you haven’t
been playing this game long enough.
In the meantime, this monster isn’t very good. It’s
slow and has little to no support.

Monster Walls! This artwork always reminded me of
the wall bosses of Secret of Mana. Wall of Illusion
is a Level 4 Dark Fiend-type monster with 1850 Def.
It also has 1000 Atk, but who cares. This wall came
out in a time when the largest attack Level 4s had
1800 Atk. This being set would survive that attack
and bounce their monster to their hand after damage
calculation. Now, Wall of Illusion is at least Level
4 and could return some Extra Deck monster to the
Extra Deck if it's attacked. But more than likely,
this monster will be destroyed before the Battle
Phase. It doesn't do enough by today's standards,
but it has some of the creepiest artwork ever. Run
it as a creepy token.
