Happy Field Friday! Fire King Island scores well
as a Field Spell Card because it works very well in
multiple decks. The effect that you can use multiple
times triggers when it's sent from the Field Zone to
the grave or banished. You have to destroy all
monsters you control. That effect will trigger many
effects in many decks that activate when monsters
are destroyed. It also makes multiple copies of Fire
King Island live. You could activate one and then
activate another, which would send the first to the
grave destroying all monsters you control.
You have to chose one effect of the next two to
activate and only once per turn. The first is to
destroy one monster in your hand or on your side of
the field. Then you have to search a Fire King
monster from your deck to your hand. You can't
activate it otherwise. Splashing a few Fire Kings
into Kozmo decks hasn't been all that bad for them,
and I'm sure it wouldn't be bad for other decks as
well. Again, destroying monsters in your Main Phase
and triggering their effects is great. The second of
these two effects is to Special Summon a Fire
Winged-Beast monster from your hand if you control
no monsters. Basically that means if you have
successfully activated the first effect, you can
activate the second on your next turn.
This common card is going to be splashed into at
least a few decks simply because it can destroy your
own monsters. Even if you don't run Fire Kings, run
it if you run your own Field Spells to get rid of
something like Kaijus or monsters stuck under
Fiendish Chain or Fog Blade.

Fire King Island
Tell me I'm not the only person here who immediately
thinks of “Ice Age 2” when they hear the term “Fire
King.” Heh.... Come to think of it, this card's art
looks an awful lot like the island setting of YGO:
GX! That can't be a coincidence...
Anyway, let's look at the actual card: it's a Field
Spell, something we don't often cover here. And it
benefits, what else? The “Fire King” theme.
Although, I don't recall many Fire King cards in
this game, unless they're coming out with more. If
so, then this card is definitely useful.... at
least, for a while.
As long as it's in play, you can either grab a Fire
King monster from your deck, or special summon a
Fire Winged-Beast (HINT: It's name should start with
“Fire King”) from your hand. But once it's destroyed
or removed from game, then Fire King Island's
volcano goes kablooie, pretty much nuking all of
your monsters. From a flavor perspective, this is
actually hilarious; on the game side, it can act as
a double-edged sword. On one hand, “Fire King”
monsters like Garunix actually benefit from being
destroyed. On the other hand, you don't want to have
other monsters to get blown up from a badly-timed
Fire King Island nuke.
My main issue here is that Fire Kings are in very
small numbers, and unless that changes in the
future, this and its sister cards will just have to
wait on the shelf for their time to shine.
Final Score: 1/5 (could change when “Fire Kings”
become more numerous) |
