Fullmetalfoes Alkahest
The second level 1 fusion in the history of the
game, and it’s just as interesting as its
predecessor. However, unlike Thousand Eyes Restrict,
which came before Instant Fusion, Fullmetalfoes
Alkahest has been prevented from being too useful
through that spell card.
The three separate effects make Alkahest a toolbox
of sorts, but it has a couple hindering aspects that
make it more of an emergency button than a true
player in the Metalfoes theme. Since he’s not hard
to fusion summon, there are definitely times when
you could find him to be useful. When you’re in a
pinch against a big boss, or perhaps when you want
to drop your hand for Void Ogre Dragon, etc. Plus,
even though you won’t be able to use Alkahest’s
stealing effect if you summon him via Instant
Fusion, he’s still an option for you to get another
quick Metalfoes if you’ve already used your Adamante.
What makes Alkahest a bit of a downer is the limit
of his third effect. While it’s intriguing to use
this unique ability against the opponent, especially
when you have the new Fullmetalfoes Fusion, which
allows you to both steal an opponent monster and
then fusion summon during the opponent turn, there
just aren’t that many options at the moment. Pretty
much your only choice is to go into Adamante if the
monster has 2500 ATK or less. Orichalc needs another
Metalfoes, Crimsonite needs 2 monsters, and
Mithrilium needs a pendulum. The pool isn’t that
great. However, even if you can’t really utilize
this effect, you can always just suck up the
monster, obtain a defensive wall with high attack,
and then use that attached monster on your turn as
free food for the Metalfoes pendulum effects.
At the moment, I struggle to see Alkahest as much
more than an emergency button or a tech play against
a specific opponent. If you’re opening up against
ABC or Zodiac Beast, for example, it could be a wise
play to summon Alkahest and be ready to steal a key
card at the right moment. But that’s a lot of
resources to spend to go that route when he’s so
vulnerable. He was clearly made as a new option for
the new quickplay spell card. And he is a suitable
one. It really is too bad he can’t use his stealing
ability during your own turn, but I think we all
understand he would be a bit too strong, considering
the archetype’s mechanic.

Stealing a monster is one of the best forms of
monster removal. Fullmetalfoes Alkahest can do that
to an effect monster once during each of their
turns. However, its stats are terrible. It's a Level
1 Fire Psychic-type Fusion Monster with 0 Atk and 0
Def. It also suffers from only being Summonable
through Fusion Summon of a Metalfoes monster and a
Normal monster. Metalfoes are big and will be big
for a while. This one isn't so strong, but very
useful. Fullmetalfoes Alkahest only gains Def from
the equipped monster(s), but it also makes them
available for future Metalfoe Fusion Summons.
Instant Fusion for this comes to mind as an easy
Metalfoe Summon. Fusion makes a big return this
format. Who saw that coming?
