Torque Tune Gear
As mentioned in my previous
review of Union Hangar, this monster is a tech
option in ABC decks for synchro plays. Outside of
that deck, however, this card still has some good
playability and most likely some kind of future in
the game.
Level 1 monsters have certain
advantages other monsters don’t have, especially
level 1 tuners, but when those monsters have no
offensive capability, it’s hard to justify the
card’s presence in your deck unless it does
something really worthwhile, a la Sage, Veiler, and
Bulb. Torque Tune Gear isn’t nearly as capable, but
it does do one really interesting thing: it
basically can change its own level. By attaching as
a union, it essentially takes on the level of that
monster. However, that’s not impressive if you have
to normal summon Torque, or even special summon him
from the hand. Because if you have Torque and let’s
say, a level 4 monster on the field, you could just
sync into a level 5. I suppose if you really needed
that Omega, and you have Torque and two level 4
monsters on the field, you could turn it all in, but
I think this shows that Torque is at its best when
he can be summoned or attached from the deck, hence
my mentioning it alongside Union Hangar.
It’s sort of a shame he can’t
be attached from the hand, because he would have
been a lot more capable in the long run. The fact of
the matter is that Torque Tune Gear is nearly dead
in the hand, because wasting a Normal Summon on him
is a losing strategy. To be successful, he needs to
be effectively cycled. I think using Union Hangar is
a great tech play, but he would need a lot more help
to be present in other decks. I don’t think it’s
impossible, however, and I do think this card has a
future. Ignoring his 0 ATK, he has the perfect type,
attribute, and level for a tuner. He’ll find a place
in a good deck one day for sure.

Torque Tune Gear...so this card is a Machine, and a
Tuner, and a Union...giving you the unique ability
to Union equip to something else (for a scoffing 500
attack and defense boost) as well as making the
equipped Monster a Tuner. Also, benefitting
from the Union status, if said Monster were to be
destroyed, this would be instead. The cool
thing is, you could use this to make something beefy
(say Level 5 or above, honestly, more like 7 or
above) into a Tuner, and then bring out something
visually stunning that should but likely won't, win
you game. Pessimistic? Perhaps, but
perhaps every bit as realistic. I do like what
it's trying to do here, but there are other ways
that aren't this involved to make a non-Tuner become
a Tuner. Not quite as good as yesterday in my
eyes, but still not garbage either.
