Sangan
I wrote this review really wishing it was Witch of
the Black Forest. Here’s to hoping she makes her
grand reappearance in the TCG soon! But we have
Critter instead, aka Sangan.
With the advent of link monsters, I absolutely love
the potential of both Sangan and Witch. Tour Guide
from the Underworld, while still restricted in both
formats (for good reason), should see heavy action
again as a tech play, just for the potential of
summoning Sangan, going into a link monster, and
getting that amazing search. And let’s not forget
the new cards coming in Code of the Duelist that
signal the game’s direction moving forward. Cards
like Rescue Ferret, Mauled Captain, and Return to
the Frontlines, which could make great use of
maintaining Sangan’s search once per turn and
replenishing your hand.
Because link monsters appear to be mostly generic
and don’t rely on levels, unlike XYZs and Synchros,
the thought is that graveyard effects will be more
valuable than ever. Monsters like Dandylion, Gozuki,
Goblin Zombie, etc. will find renewed success
because there’s no longer a specific process to what
you’re doing in order to summon a link monster. If
anything, the game will start to rely even more on
the kind of deck your running. Earth decks will
probably consider Missus Radiant to be an early
staple, for example. But that will only return us to
what the game was like over 10 years ago. And what I
mean is that generic searches off graveyard effects
should come at a premium, and that’s what Sangan
does best, just like he was doing for years before
he was banned. I actually think Sangan’s errata is
perfect, and the same goes for Witch. Sangan should
still find its way into many decks, but it’s no
longer broken.

Not has much has changed for Sangan. He keeps
moving on and off the ban list. He keeps having his
effects reworded to work with new Extra Deck
monsters. The newest text limits Sangan to once per
turn, but my question is, Will that matter? I doubt
it. Searching is very important in the game. My
other question is, like Synchro Summon, Will Link
Summon trigger the effect? We all know that XYZ
detaching does not. The answer is probably yes and
will create a surge in popularity with Tour Guide
from the Underworld. Own multiple copies of both and
see which version becomes the most expensive. Being
able to splash into decks that simply run monsters
with low attack makes Sangan versatile and high
scoring.
Anyway, I'm glad to have some time again to post
reviews. Thanks for putting up with my hiatus.

Sangan
He's finally back from the prison of the forbidden
section, he's been trapped in for years. Sangan has
been moved off the forbidden list and given free
reign.
But not without a few restrictions. First, whichever
monster he searches, you're not allowed to use the
effect of for the rest of the turn. And second, you
can only use the effect of Sangan once per turn.
This makes the little demonic hairball a lot more
balanced. While you won't be able to immediately
benefit from him, that doesn't mean you can't set up
future plays as he only prevents you from using that
cards effect for the rest of that turn.
Send him to the grave and add a hand trap for use on
the opponents next turn. Or let him get killed in
battle and search for something to gain advantage in
your own turn.

Sangan is a legit classic, straight from the 2nd
booster set, Metal Raiders, all the way back in
2002. It was considered inferior to the Witch
of the Black Forest, but people still ran it.
It was good with the Mystic Tomato engine, and was
used to search out Sinister Serpent as soon as
possible to maintain card advantage. It was a
true floater. It activated whether sent from
battle or card effect. It also was a great for
attacking directly and getting 1000 damage in
because the opponent wouldn't waste a trap card on
it.
There was a time period, maybe 10 years ago, after
Sinister and other cards were banned, when Sangan
was relatively balanced. At one point many
players didn't run Sangan because it sacrificed
field advantage. When Tour Guide and Rank 3
XYZ's came out, this changed everything. The
ruling was that Sangan searched whenever it was
detached, and this was overpowered. At the
time, I felt like limiting Tour Guide to 1 was the
best option, since Sangan wasn't causing any
problems prior, but Tour Guide was too profitable to
get hit so Sangan got hit instead.
In general, I'm not sure how it would perform in
today's meta. I presume it would still be a
very good card at least. With more archetypes
then ever, it can do a lot for a deck that needs to
search. With Pendulums, Sangan effective
searches out spell cards too.
Sangan was a formative card in the early years of
Yugioh, and a lot has changed. The purpose it
would be used for now (getting combos/engines
started) is different than aspects it was used for
before (toolboxes, basic card advantage). As
much as I miss it, maybe it's best as a memory.
