Magical Scientist
If someone forced me to name a more infamous card
than Magical Scientist, I’d be thinking about it for
a long time and probably not come back with a solid
answer. Magical Scientist is a bizarre outlier in
the history of this game, a monster with no
predecessor and an effect that to this day would
still be the most broken text a monster has ever
received with the exception of D-HERO Disc Commander
(and many would argue with me about that). He’s the
reason people still consider Magician’s Force to be
one of the best boosters all-time. To put it in
perspective, Magical Scientist allows you to play as
many Instant Fusions as you can afford in a turn,
but up to level 6 and they can all attack during the
turn.
So what would happen if Konami lost its mind and
returned Scientist to 1? The game would break. Like
completely break. Players would trample weaker human
beings hunting down Baltars and even Catapult
Turtles from the recesses of older players’ binders.
And if you haven’t seen any of the combos people are
coming up with for Sea Monster of Theseus, check
some videos out on Youtube. Then try to imagine if
you were using Magical Scientist instead of Instant
Fusion. For the cost of 2000 LP, you could summon
Ultimaya Tzolkin and not even break a sweat. The
mere thought of it gives me chills. Just remembering
going to regionals and watching players OTK with
Scientist as I sat and watched makes me angry.
There’s a reason Magical Scientist makes my list of
top cards that can never come back. I list him right
behind Disc Commander and Painful Choice, but
honestly these three cards are 1a, 1b, and 1c.
Scientist will never come back. And it shouldn’t.

In all honesty, I took a break from Yugioh when
this card came out and I wasn't very present in
competitive play during the Turtle/Scientist OTK
format. But this card just seemed very
strange. First of all, why have a monster that
can bring out a ton of Fusion monsters at a very low
cost (even with an attacking restriction)?
Second of all, why make this card a common?
I'm no fan of price gouging but this could at least
have been a super. A broken card though.
Too much plussing. Too much OTK potential.
And it fueled the graveyard for Chaos at the time.
I don't see this card ever coming back, which I why
I chose to review it. As far as how I would
errata it, the devil is in the details. Maybe
we should give it a once per turn limit. No...
A once per duel limit. And maybe make the cost
1500 or 2000.

Oh man did I love this common card. Magical
Scientist is a Level 1 Dark Spellcaster-type monster
with 300 Atk and 300 Def. For the same Instant
Fusion cost of 1000 Life Points, Magical Scientist
could Special Summon any Level 6 or lower Fusion
Monster face-up. That monster couldn't attack
directly and it would return to the Extra Deck at
the end of the turn. Do you know what's missing from
that effect? "Once per turn" is nowhere to be seen.
If this were ever unbanned it would be abusable for
XYZ decks. It could even summon that new Fusion
Tuner Monster for instant Tzolkin plays. All at the
cost of 2000 or more Life Points and a Normal Summon
(probably). Totally worth it.

If ever unbanned: 5/5

Magical Scientist. It is a level 1(can you say
one-for-one?), dark, spellcaster, effect monster
which reads: Pay 1000 life points ti special summon
one level six or lower fusion monster from your
extra deck in face-up attack or defense postion.
That fusion monster cannot attack your opponent's
life points directly, and is returned to your extra
deck at the end of the turn. So who here likes
Instant Fusion? Go ahead everybody raise their
hands. Ok, now imagine that you could search
Instant Fusion, and you can activate it as many
times as you can afford the life point cost? This
little guy was a part of an OTK involving Catapult
Turtle, yes Catapult Turtle. You would get both on
the board and used Catapult Turtle's effect to
tribute fusion monsters on your side of the field
summoned by Magical Scientist inflicting half the
original attack of the monster to your opponent's
life points. If unstopped, you would inflict
exactly 8000 points of damage. Aside from that
aspect, it would provide amazing utility for anyone
wanting to negate monster effects, traps, spells, or
steal monsters ala Thousand-Eye Restrict. To give
you an idea take a look at the 2004 world
championship deck list Decklist
