Darklord Zerato
As we discussed last week, the Darklords have
incredible might and speed, but most of that is
based on the cards just recently released. However,
two holdovers from many years passed still made the
cut. The first was Darklord Superbia, the
centerpiece of the archetype, and the second was
Darklord Zerato, the best “tech” monster of the lot.
There are two reasons he found great use in the
modern day Darklord deck. First, he could be special
summoned, unlike many of the old Darklords. This was
crucial. And the second reason was because of his
level. He could have been level 7, 8, or 10 but any
other level would have made him more of a liability.
But because he had a good level, he found great use
for rank 8 plays, especially considering he blows
himself up after using his own effect. Now, he won’t
be taking up 3 deck presence in any of the best
Darklord decks, but he’s a highly recommended tech
for the theme, simply because of his harmony and
because he does something literally none of the
other monsters can do. Considering he can be easily
searched and summoned at any point of the duel, he
has immense value as the emergency button when
things go south and you need a comeback. And his
cohesion with Superbia can’t be overstated. In any
kind of pinch, Zerato creates a way to clear
opponent monsters and then bring out bosses like
Felgrand and Number 38.
I believe Zerato has mild future potential. His
effect outside of Darklords is good, but he
obviously never saw much action until the release of
the new Darklord support, but he’ll probably never
be terrible either. As the Darklords’ success goes,
though, so probably will Zerato’s.

Darklord Zerato has been reviewed before. He got
a 3.33/5 average score, which I think holds to this
day. Strong and able to be Special Summoned, his
Level of 8 makes him at least a one-of card in
Darklord decks. He can even make his Normal Summon
more manageable if there are 4 or more different
named Dark monsters in the grave. His effect can
help turn good turns into OTKs, and the cost makes
the Raigeki effect balanced. The effect is also
repeatable if you have multiple Dark monsters in
hand. Then the bad news happens. If you activated
that effect but didn't win that turn, Darklord
Zerato destroys himself. Still, Trade-In and Allure
love this card. Run 1 or 2 since 3 would probably be
bad. Happy Friday!
Score: 3/5 He's no Superbia.
Art: 4/5 A sexy dude card. Gender equality is good.
